I have learnt so much from your channel….If you ever put together a course on Mastering, I would buy it….I get fed up seeing people selling courses with no real experience, and little knowledge….Thankyou for being honest, and up front with what you say….
I genuinely enjoy sharing my knowledge and try get the points across in a way that everyone can hopefully understand. I'm glad you've learnt a lot. A course is something I will be putting together next year. Thanks for your support.
I have the 2 band version of the unit and can vouch for the brilliance of what Gustav Goly developed with the design. A 4 band unit, wow, what a beast. Excellent demo...
The 4 band is essentially the 2 of the 2 band versions. I swapped out my 2 band CrossCOMPression EQs for the 4 band version. But I want to compare the 2 band to the 4 band to compare the EQ section. I initially felt the EQ was smoother and more like a Porter Grinder. So I'm interested to see if this is the case. I will do a video on this to confirm.
@@AudioAnimalsStudio that would be a fantastic demo, would greatly appreciate hearing/seeing that. I was considering a second crosscomp to do a 4 band dynamic as well. My initial thoughts were that the crosscomp filters were slightly different from the Grinder. The High Shelf on the Crosscomp is like pushing air, until you get down into the high mids where it gets a bit more assertive, in a good way for me. I did notice you mentioning that the 4 band filters were from the Grinder. Or perhaps like a Grinder. Either way, what a beast you have in there. I wonder how the box tone differs between the 2 and the 4, if any? Btw, I thought I had a nice rig, Jeeeez man, yours is off the charts.
@engmix you should see the other studio we have here. This mastering chain is small compared to that one. Studio A has some incredible equipment in it. Including a 11u goly rack which after adding this has turned into a 15u goly rack. My instant thoughts on the 4 band was that the EQ was better than the 2 band. But this may be placebo which is why I want to do this test for myself. I always like to come back to questions with facts rather than opinion. Opinions can often be wrong. I get the impression it's more Porter Grinder like. We'll all find out next week.
@@AudioAnimalsStudio Hats off to ya on the success of your studio! I've been making records professionally for nearly 40 years, mostly in the US. Cheers to making records! Well said on facts versus opinions. Looking forward to seeing the follow-up. And you might be right, as I did notice that the crosscomp is not quite a Grinder, for better or worse, usage depending?
Great Paul, what entertaining "toys" you have, and how good it is to be able to make a living doing what you like, congratulations, from the bottom of my heart, and thank you for sharing.
Wow. The mix examples really showed what this unit is capable of. The big question I have of course is -- does this replace your Goly Crosscomp EQ? This seems essentially like a 4-band version of that, with routing capabilities! His website seems to confirm that as well... Guessing the older 2-band will be sold off?
Yes essentially it's a larger 4 band version of the cross compression EQ. It will directly replace my CrossCOMPression EQ. If you added another CrossCOMPression EQ you will have a very similar unit to this without as much routing capabilities.
Hey Paul…pretty killer sounding piece there. How is this different than his “Gravity’s Rainbow” EQ? Looks identical… save for the color scheme of the knobs. Is this commercially available? I can’t find it in the GOLY website. Lastly…what’s the price?
This one is serial number 000 and the other one we have is 001. So these are the first two units built. There was an initial run of about 7 units I saw going out. They are commercially available. If you get in touch with Gustav he will build one for you I'm sure. They are priced around £5000 for the version without cross compression. And £5400 for the version with. It's worth having just to get de comp.
It is exactly the same as the gravity rainbow EQ. This was probably the name for it before he asked about what it should be called. I said call it the 4 band dynamic EQ. This way its called exactly what it is. Less confusion.
@@AudioAnimalsStudio I agree…he’d never get any interest with that name. Plus when you search it up all you get are hits about Pynchon book of the same name. Does it have High and low pass filters?
@@AudioAnimalsStudioHey, thanks for the info, demo and in general…a great channel. I really appreciate the acoustic drums as a way of showing the unit…especially a compressor.
@@AudioAnimalsStudio I wish I'd had the insight and foreknowledge to get this as my first HW EQ. Accounting for all the lackluster bog standard ones and mid-tier wannabes I initially purchased and wrestled with, and then eventually sold onward... I could have bought a Gravity's Rainbow (or some other truly delightful EQ) probably twice over. Sigh. Lesson (hopefully) learned.
@@AudioAnimalsStudio I’ve just realised I’ve had notification for replies turned off for nearly my whole time on RU-vid.. probably miss a endless amount of replies 🤦
There isn't a plugin that directly does this but using something like Fabfilter multiband comp you can achieve a similar effect. Not the same as it's compression and not dynamic EQ. It's very unique. There is a 2 band version which has the CrossCOMPression feature in it. These half the price. Watch this review ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GLd87vuvnT8.htmlsi=RJR1mNanJpc3s7WV
@@AudioAnimalsStudio I've used Fabfilter ProQ 3, in dynamic mode, to trigger a de-essing effect in a certain frequency range, but this is a whole other ballgame. The mix came instantly alive!
I'm going to do a test next week comparing the CrossCOMPressionEQ to the 4 band dynamic EQ. I want to see if the CrossCOMPressionEQ is essentially 2 bands of the 4 band version. I don't get the feeling it is. So I need to find out.
