That's when singers really had to sing. No auto-tune, no big effects, just pure talent with their voice. Rest in Peace, Jim Nabors. You brought us so many great laughs and that incredible voice.
Fun fact: Jim Nabors was on the first ever episode of The Carol Burnett Show and she thought he was good luck so he was on the first show of every season throughout the run. They became very close friends.
Mr. Pyle was so much better known as a comedian but damn could than man sing. This is NOT my style of music, never has been, but I could not help but be moved by it when it first aired. Thanks, Ms. India!
Kathy H right? Its not my type of music either but wow especially when you see him in his Gomer character and then hear him sing 😮 Kinda reminds me of Ernie Ford his character in a few. I Love Lucy episodes was so dopey and u hear him sing 😮. This song tho 😊 was nice
SSShadow Wolf oh yeah. I never even used to watch that show when i was younger i avoided it but then i started getting into it. Stil havent seem much Gomer Pyle show
You don't have to like the style of music to appreciate the greatness of a musician (whether his instrument is his voice or a physical instrument). I am not a fan of bluegrass but dang, some of those pickers are out of this world.
@Mark W Bruno Mars. Ed Sheeran. Adele. Jason Mraz. Dua Lipa. Taylor Swift. Daniel Bedingford. Michael Buble.....and now Tones and I. You can include Virtually every country and western singer. I'm willing to bet you don't know how "autotune" works, or why it is used. It is almost mandatory in some genres of music, such as reggaeton. This doesn't necessarily mean the singer can't sing...although I would guess that many labels do not choose reggaeton artists by their vocal skills.
@Mark W Autotune has been around since the late 90's. It's your belief that in the last 20 something years since its use began, nobody...with the exception of Ariana....has had the ability to sing well without its help? ahhahaahahahaha you are a moron. I suggest you educate yourself about the music business before suggesting such stupidity.
Jim Nabors' (the actor's name) singing voice is a fantastic example of expectations being literally disintegrated. Gomer Pyle was a hilarious character.
Jim Nabors was classically trained. Beautiful voice. He sang the song Back Home Again inIndiana at the Indiana 500 Auto Race 32yrs straight. 1976-2014. When he sang gospel my heart always opens and I can feel his voice to the deepest where our Lord God dwells
Jim Nabors played the gas station attendant, Gomer Pyle, on the Andy Griffith Show 1962-1964. In 1964-1969 he had his own show Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C.,. Nabors recorded 28 albums and numerous singles.
This girl's reaction is precious! She didn't expect what she experienced, but those of us who grew up knowing Jim Nabors knew his voice would bowl her over. Never underestimate the talent of anyone!
I loved watching gomer Pyle as a kid and remember how shocked I was when this came on. You need to see an episode of Gomer Pyle to fully appreciate it.
It seems strange to an old guy like me to be living in a world where so many people have never heard of Jim Nabors or Gomer Pyle. It takes a lot of the fun out of hearing this performance if you aren't familiar with the Gomer Pyle character from having seen the show.
It's OK that so many younger people do not know who he is and are learning about him and possibly so many other artists through India's RU-vid channel. For there are sooooo many artists and actors of today and the last 10 years who I have never heard of either on shows I have never watched. :-)
You get to hear some of his "Gomer" voice early in this clip. I think I remember some episodes of either Gomer Pyle or Andy Griffith in which he would sing in his "Gomer" voice and not his natural voice. You would have to watch at least a couple of episodes to really appreciate how amazed people were by hearing him really sing.
One of the funniest spin offs ever! Especially when Sgt. Carter made him put a bucket over his head and he said it helped him think =) Still his funniest scene was in Andy Griffith when he hit Barney with "CITIZENS ARREST! CITIZENS ARREST!"
@@Cyborg-hs4jo When Gomer yells at Barney, "You can just go up an alley and holler fish!!" I just lose it! I don't know why Barney should "holler fish", but that's just Gomer I suppose lol!
Absolutely! I’ve even been guilty of belting out those words over the years, almost, but not nearly as hilarious as Gomer, when joking around with my kids.
Jim was an amazing actor and to watch your reaction melted my heart. What I just witnessed in that split screen was to never judge a book by its cover. God bless!
I remember being a kid and just being floored by his magnificent singing voice. I have loved this song since I heard him sing in this very clip from Gomer Pyle USMC.
i was sitting at our table having tea when the show was on (i was only young) and for the first and only time i got down from the table and ran into the next room just couldnt believe that voice.
I anm 63 live in the UK. how come our radio shows NEVER played his songs or mentioned Jim Nabors ? I would have been on the first plane over to see him sing. thanks young lady for posting this
The entire video starts with Gomer sitting on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial despondent over being so scared to go on stage that he lost his voice. A security guard talks to him and tells him how much fear Lincoln had to overcome in leading the nation during the Civil War. Gomer gets up and while reading the inscription gradually relaxes and gets his voice back. Your clip picks up as he comes back to the auditorium.
Originally, the "impossible Dream " was a song from the Broadway Show "Man fof La Mancha", ultimately made into a movie, and the song covered by various recording artists throughout the years
Love him.My generation grew up watching Jim on Andy Griffith, then he left Mayberry and joined the Marines.Everyone loved him as Gomer Pyle.He was one of the great ones.
If you aren’t familiar with the “Andy Griffith“ show, or Gomer Pyle’s show..you might not get the point of this- he was a quirky, silly character on both shows with a high pitched voice- Since he sings like this, that’s a big point about it..considering the voice and type of character he played on both shows- 💗🤘🏼✌️
I love when he sung, "Oh my pa pa. To me he was so wonderful." Do anyone remember that song? I have watched every episode of Gomer Pyle and never gets tired of watching.
Thank you so much. I'm 64yrs old and remember that episode. At that time few people knew he could sing like that. I was a big fan of Gomer Pyle USMC. It showed that a good heart can overcome many obstacles. Thank you again. BTW...I'm a former Marine (1978 to 1982). I will subscribe to your channel too.
Dear young lady, Thank you for from the bottom of my heart I remember listening to Jim Nabors on my parents real to real stereo even before there was 8 tracks thank you for the memories God Bless. Sincerely Richard
Beautifully sung. "The Impossible Dream" is originally from the musical "Man of La Mancha". Andy Williams and Roger Whittaker also both do lovely versions of it.
EricIrl And that musical was created by a guy most famous for the commercial jingles he wrote, his most famous probably being “Nobody doesn’t like Sarah Lee”. He so wanted a hit Broadway musical, but had three flops, and everyone thought Man of La Mancha was going to be a flop too. It could only get the least good showhouse on Broadway. But the audience made it a massive hit.
When I was a kid in the '70s in Atlanta, we had WTCG (Ted Turner's UHF station) which ran The Andy Griffith Show, Gomer Pyle USMC, and famously (for Roger Whittaker), ads for a compilation album of his you could order. Atlanta had everything to do with Roger breaking through to an American audience, as the wife of Atlanta's WSB Radio's program director had heard "The Last Farewell" (a masterpiece!) while in Canada, and urged him to put it on the air. It became a hit here, and Turner's people saw the opportunity to sell the ad space. Win-win. I've always loved Roger's singing and of course, whistling. An amazing person.
Thank you India. I grew up watching Gomer/ Jim Nabors. He was very funny and I knew he had a great voice. I just had not heard him in decades it seems. Pure talent. Brought tears to my eyes also.
I could see him singing a million times and never get tried of it. Thank you Mr Nabors for sharing your gift with us, And to the younger generation this is real singing just talent
I was fortunate to have opened a few shows for Mr. Nabors back in the 80s and he was an amazingly wonderful man. He would arrive for rehearsal and warm up with the orchestra without needing a microphone. So happy you chose this selection. Keep up the great reactions.
'Back home again in Indiana And it seems that I can see The gleaming candlelight, still burning bright Through the sycamores for me The new-mowed hay sends all its fragrance Through the fields I used to roam When I dream about the moonlight on the Wabash How I long for my Indiana home'
While Jim may have employed vocal training in his professional career there is no record in his biography that he was classically trained, and he certainly was not an opera singer. As a youth he sang in the church, was in his school glee club. In college he got hi degree in Business. His talent was natural and a true gift.
A Classic. This from an era when TV was more than entertainment. These shows all taught moral lessons, and how hard work was a good thing. Boy have we stepped down many steps as a society.
JIm Nabors played a doofus as Gomer Pyle and he was really funny. But so many people never realized what an amazing singer he was........ Thanks for reminding me.....
Great reaction! The song is originally from the Broadway show Man of Lamancha...based on the story Don Quixote!! You should check out the original cast recording.💜☮
As a kid, I loved watching Gomer Pyle USMC on TV, and before that when he was on the Andy Griffith Show. He had that well known high voice on TV, but when I saw this episode, I was floored to hear that singing voice. Talk about a hidden talent.
Wonderful, Thank you soo much......X....O, I haven't heard this song for many decades. I have never heard this performance. Pfc. Gomer Pyle (Jim Nabors) and the Marine Corps Band, it doesn't get any better than that!........and so stirring, thanks again, sweet lady. OLD PETER U S A God bless!
India do you know Steve Urkel from the 90's sitcom Family Matters? In his day Gomer Pile was kinda similar on his sitcom. Gomer was a lovable simpleton who got himself in funny situations with a more "normal" castmates. The clip you showed was created to showcase that the actor who played goofy Gomer could actually sing. Similarly, Family Matters had some shows where the actor playing Steve Urkel could show another side of himself for dramatic effect. There was one for instance where he was cool & sexy.
This was a scene from Gomer Pyle, USMC. The one where Gomer enters a Marine Corp singing contest. I think it is the best rendition of this song ever. He is one of my favorite singers. I can literally listen to him sing for hours at a time, something I can say about very few performers. I think he may have had the best voice of the 20th century. He never had the fame as a singer that some others had, but he had a wonderful career as a singer and actor. At one time, his TV show was #1 in the country. He actually had another TV show before The Andy Griffith and Gomer Pyle. It was The Jim Neighbors Show, a weekly variety show. I can remember the episode on Andy Griffith when they discover that Gomer has this talented voice and he sings in the church choir. The next day, the whole country was debating if Jim had actually sung the sing or if it had been dubbed. Talk about being surprised.
