It’s just crazy how all that came from a few seeds sowed about 6” apart. Thanks for the video

It really is!! The pack had around 25 seeds, with nearly 100% germination. It's incredible how bulked up and bushy each plant got. And all for about $3. I'm still amazed for my first time growing gomohrena.

Hi Heidi! I have no doubt yours will turn out great as well. I didn't do anything special or baby them, which is why I love them so much, for the ease. You technically don't *need* to soak any seed. It just helps is germinate faster. I like to soak mine bc I always forget to go out and water seeds as they're germinating. But the result is the same whether you do it in-ground or inside first- eventually they germinate.

Hi Barbara! Thank you. I would say you can water them occasionally, if the soil feels dry. Depending on what zone your in, you can likely pull out the containers and place them in the next few weeks. I'm pulling mine out in February. That way the elements (rain, and/or snow) will help keep them moist and watered, and they will start getting sun which they need to bloom well. Hope this helps.

@HookedandRooted
@HookedandRooted Год назад
Hi there, Mine have lots of chaff too. You can rub them between your fingers once they've dried enough and most of the chaff should rub off. Also, since gomphrena seed directions typically say to soak seeds overnight before sowing to improve germination. My thought is that soaking them will also help remove some of that chaff. Large scale seed companies probably have machines that do this process I imagine.

Hi Marion, I haven't noticed any reseeding going on yet. Perhaps they will and just haven't germinated yet. I'll have to try to notice in the coming weeks as the season warms up. The seeds are pretty small. You can start them in little pots ahead of time if you wanted too, in very sunny window, or wait to direct sow them. Both methods worked well for me. I tried a handful in winter sowing (didn't do too well), I sowed some in a few small pots with potting mix, they germinated, and I also direct sowed after soaking the seeds, and those did very well also.

I'm growing for first time this year. I was wondering if you deadhead them? I can't seem to find out if you do or not.

Have you ever had these to self seed? I have something coming up, it's either gomphrena or " touch ME NOT " impatiens .

Leave the roots in the ground when doing fall cleanup for soil health

I have since changed over to doing that as of this past season. Thank you for the recommendation.

Because of you I to will be trying these this summer. Do you think you will plant them a bit earlier this year?
@HookedandRooted

Hi Michelle! I hope you have a great experience with them. Yes, I will definitely be starting these earlier this year. Right after my last frost date. I waited a bit last year because the tulip foliage was still dying back. I just fell behind. Fingers crossed I can start most annuals earlier this year. I was really late on marigolds this year too.

I live in Delaware, if I am directly sowing into the ground now, do I still have to soak them for 24 to 48 hours? Love your videos! 💛

Hi Robyn! Thank you so much. Yes, I would recommend it. It helps break down the outer shell (chaff) of the seed, which will help it germinate easier.

Just curious, you said the deer didn't bother them, but did they reach over and go after anything behind or around them? I may consider gomphrena if they discourage the deer from coming around. Would you recommend starting indoors or direct sowing? I'm zone 7, Maryland. Thanks

@HookedandRooted Год назад
Hi Janice! Oh they sure do reach around them and chomp on my knockout roses if I forget to spray them with deer repellent. While they don't favor or eat the gomhrena, they will pick and choose around for plants they do like. Unlike marigolds that let out a fragrance that tends to help repel them, the gomphrena didn't have a fragrance, so it didn't help repel them. I was just glad they didn't feast on my beautiful border.

Do you cut these back after blooms or deadhead?

I have an apt patio and it is covered. I have planted tulips and daffodils with potting soil with cocoa peat. I need to know if I should water during the winter. I live in zone 7. Thank you.

They are planted in pots.

Hi Pat, The pots should be watered occasionally, if they aren't getting any water from the elements. In a zone 7, my guess is that your spring bulbs typically bloom a bit earlier than mine in zone 6. I would say that they need some water yes, so perhaps every couple of weeks give them a watering, and then by February move them into position where they will get rain and sun. They will need sun to flower best. Hope this helps.

Hi Rosie, yes I've seen them at nurseries. I'm pretty sure proven winners sells an annual gomphrena.
