Good Books Lately: Episode ONE!

Lifelong reader and long time WNH viewer here, and I'm so excited to have one of my favorite fiber podcast personalities now sit and discuss books with us all! I do a knitting podcast here and there, but my husband and I have considered jumping on the RU-vids to also chat about what we're reading and listening to. The Road is one of those books that stick with you, like Richard Rhodes The Ungodly or The Making of the Atomic Bomb. There’s a quote in The Road “we remember what we want to forget and we forget what we want to remember “.

Great first video. Several of Daphne DuMaurier's books, including Rebecca and My Cousin Rachel, were made into movies by Alfred Hitchcock. I saw the movies first then read the books. Your bok choices sound intriguing.

Love this! I have been watching Wool, needles hands and love hearing what you have read and your comments. Rebecca is one of my favorite books. If you haven’t seen the Hitchcock version of the movie, it is excellent. I just finished ‘ The Berry Pickers’ by Amanda Peters and loved it. As far as young adult books, I felt the same way but we have read a few in book club and I would highly recommend ’ The Book Thief’ by Markus Zusak.

I have loved Taylor’s podcast and now enjoying this one. I like all the different genres that you try. I found a few for me and a few for my husband. My husband and I will listen to books on road trips but have often decided to read the same book and then talk about it. It is fun.

I have recently re engaged with reading & have classics am & fiction pm. Made a little library from thrifting books. I had declutterred so had very few books. I love adding up original cost and how many books you get via thrifting 💰🤗

I have read Rebbeca! My mom had a very early copy of it! I might pull it out and read again! If the 1st few pages of a book do not grab me, I'm done, so yes a 5 star if I finish it

Okay. That was super fun! I thought it would be weird having worlds collide, but I definitely enjoyed it! I quibble with the label of ‘romantic fiction’ these days as it’s been co-opted from what it meant in the 1800’s… LOL Ah well… Your preoccupation with not reading YA fiction, Tayler, cracks me up. For me, the writing makes the book; no matter who it’s written for. I recently finished The Lost Library. (With a title like that, I couldn’t resist. 😆) It’s a book that I think was written for ages maybe 9-12? Not sure. But It was absolutely engrossing. I read just a little bit before bed each night, so as to make it last. Great premise, plot and characters. So, all that to say, I encourage you to go forth and discover some great YA fiction! 🤓💚📚

Here from Wool Needles Hands and what a great episode! I have read The Road multiple times. I love Cormac McCarthy. Blood Meridian and All the Pretty Horses are great if you want to check out more of his work (and can deal with the lack of dialogue markers lol). I also started the Familiar and really enjoyed some Giordano Bruno books that I could have sworn Tayler recommended a while ago on the WNH channel. Can’t wait for more episodes!

Our together favorites have been mostly sci-fi-Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir, The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells, and a couple Blake Crouch titles. Tayler, thanks for recommending Rebecca, I love a good gothic novel! My recent favorite gothic was Starling House by Alix E. Harrow. It may be a little too YA for you, though! Thanks for sharing!

Love this. Unique insights from real readers. Just finished Little Bee by Chris Cleave and, on audio, Just One Damned Thing After Another by Jodi Taylor. Both great for our week in the desert. I wish my husband would read with me but he complains about my mysteries and too many characters. I will look at the Roosevelt book for him though.

So excited to see this new channel! My husband and I have been getting back into reading. One of my favorite recent reads is “How High We Go in the Dark” by Sequoia Nagamatsu. It is fiction but so much of the story felt like it was something that either has recently happened or will happen. I am trying to get my husband to read it because he really liked Cloud Atlas. I think this book is very much like Cloud Atlas but the connections and timelines are easier to follow. I gave it 5 stars on Goodreads. Excited to learn about some new books and try to branch out from my normal dystopian or fantasy genres!

Ive also recently gotten back in to reading. I got myself a Kindle, and Im soaking up books! Im currently reading The Book of Doors by Gareth Brown, and Im listening to Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare (she was the author of one of my favorite YA series as a teen, but i havent read this series. Giving it a shot even though its YA!).

Really liked your podcast. Now I have some additional TBR books to look forward to reading.

Daphne du Maurier is one of my all time favorites. She is the queen of gothic/psychological unease and, I recently learned, influenced Hitchcock - which totally fits…. I recommend The River by Peter Heller (not gothic but a great story). More modern gothic - The Distant Hours or The Shadow of the Wind. Right now, I am reading The Book that Wouldn’t Burn. Enjoying both of your podcasts!😊📚🧶

First, I am so excited about this project! As an avid reader and knitter, what could be better!? Really interesting books highlighted here. I was on a big Daphne du Maurier kick last year and I might have liked My Cousin Rachel even better than Rebecca? The movie was disappointing :(

Branden talking of the book about Lincoln reminded me of one I read years ago called Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders. Such a different book and one I just can’t describe… maybe worth a look 😉

I love The Road!!!!! It's a book I've read twice and plan to read again in a few years. And I actually like his minimalist approach to punctuation. The Road is so worth it. It asks the question of why keep going in a world on fire? Why wake up and take the next step forward? Why not just give up? I reread during my own spiritual, existential crisis and it was an unexpected balm! Can you share more on what Rebecca is up there with your favorites? I'm not sure your review conveyed why you like it THAT much. Great first episode!

So, I could be wrong, but I thought what qualifies a book as young adult is that the main characters are teens - early 20’s… I’m sure someone in the YouTubiverse will correct me if I’m mistaken, but I’m pretty sure that’s all it takes to be a YA novel. Could you hold the book you're talking about up or prop it up on something so we can see it while you're talking about it. While you're talking about it but moving it around so much I'm constantly trying to get a glimpse of it, title and cover. It's making me a little nuts, haha!

Great episode! I tried reading The Road: couldn't finish it, it was just too emotional for me. I am a mother of two boys too: just couldn't read two pages without crying. My favourite book serie is The Expanse: I love space and science fiction. I did search for Rebecca at my local library: sounds good! 😊

I came for Tayler, but I'll stay for Branden. LOL. Tayler, Rebecca is truly one of the greatest books ever! Branden, if you like spy books, you might like the books by Mick Herron, the Slough House series. Modern spy stuff. Also, you might like A Spy Among Friends, about Kim Philby, famous traitor and spy. It was also written by Ben McIntyre.

Great first episode. I've subscribed and will continue to watch. I love that you read books together. I'm wondering why the reluctance to read YA books? I mean, really, why? I am 58 and a genre type has never put me off reading a book. When I was a kid the distinctions were way less important. In my reading I would be bold enough to say books in the YA genre have been amongst my favourites. Of course I am having a complete blank on which ones right this minute. I tend not to think of books in genres. Even though that is how they are sold to us. I read across all varieties and am often surprised to learn how it is described in a book listing, say on Amazon or Goodreads. Anyway, just saying, don't assume YA doesn't address all the big issues of life or is lighter/less grown up or whatever than any other fiction. This is not intended as any kind of criticism, so please don't take I that way. ❤
