Good Game or just Nostalgia? - Heroes of Might and Magic 3

Today I decided to make a video (hopefully the first in a series) where I see if an old game is ACTUALLY good, or if it's overhyped due to nostalgia.
I have never played Heroes of Might and Magic 3 before, so I thought it would be the perfect example to kick off this debate.

I was born in '06. All my favorite movies are old. All my favorite shows are old. All my favorite games are old. And my music decades are '30s-'60s. It's definitely not about nostalgia, it's about the actual care and effort put into games rather than making them have butt loads of micro transactions or paywalls. Bioware is the only company I still trust with games. I loved Dragon Age and cannot wait for DA: Veilguard coming out on Halloween. I don't think it'll beat DA:Origins but I do have hope.

I think it's because back then they were often made by a bunch of enthusiast who didn't even know a thing about marketing strategies, focus groups and monetization models, yet they'd been allowed to make AAA titles. And so was my brother, playing Starcraft, cause we didn't have internet, so LAN was the best thing, and he took me one day with him. Over at another computer, I saw this guy play a game with creatures of all kinds, he was playing Inferno, so I saw the magogs and demons. I became glued to his screen, probably bothering him (a teen,maybe adult, having a 9 year old glued to him). Shortly after we had the game on our home PC and I still play it today. A fan expansion came out in 2010, and was last updated 2024, the game is more alive than ever, with up to 5k players on the online lobby, if multiplayer is your thing. Lazy IT tip: Even if you don't have a printer, you can usually print things to a .PDF and read it on the screen. One common theme in the old awesome games of the 90's and the classics was they always came with a manual that had information that was helpful as well as world building. Huh, I guess I actually bought all the Hero's games on GOG. I really should give them a try. Part of the nostalgia trip is the artwork. Old games came in larger boxes and just looked awesome on a book shelf. I'm rambling now. Great video, always a pleasure watching your English content. Thank You.

*Watching in horror as she skips her turn without building on her town* Im just kidding I freaking love this game, there is a lot of small details in it that you might have missed: If you mix creatures from different factions (Like having a human and a demon) will give your entire army -1 to moral for each faction mixed (having 2 demons and 1 human is still only -1 but add a skeleton and its -2) If you dont know if a creature on the map is upgraded or not, upgraded creatures will be facing left while un/upgraded will be facing right In combat if you have a creature stand infront of another creature the one behind will get bonus defence against projectile The spell book can be found above the shield icon (if your hero has one), creatures does not have a spell book but some can still cast spells, if a creature has a spell they can cast its only on your own creature (hover your mouse over your own creatures and the spell icon should show up if the creature is able to cast) I hope this is helpfull

@@Angelikatosh If you got through h5 I assume you can get through this. But sadly this is one of those games where you can play for 20 years and still be awful at it. I was. I didn't realize how many things I didn't know until I watched ranked matches. Every new player will do one or all of these mistakes: play with one hero only. Forget to build, forget to cast spells. Not knowing how to use Wait, and taking fights poorly. Visit everything on the map - all of these eventually snowball into your defeat, because you don't optimize your movement and exploration. I can win a campaign map in about 2-4 weeks, but as a new player they just want to collect everything on the map, build every building, and take at least 4 months to finish a mission (taking their sweet time enjoying the game which is fair ofc). Though being very slow, bad building and bad spending habits lead to your defeat.

Winning strat: Level up to expert Fire Magic and Earth Magic. In battle, cast Blind at the enemy's best units (at expert Fire Magic, it lasts several moves). Cast Ressurection (with expert Earth Magic, it is permanent, i.e. your units remain with you after the battle). As you whittle down your enemy's army, leave the last unit alive, keep blinding it and ressing your units, until your army is intact, then finish off the last enemy unit ans you've won with no losses. Helps if you play Order (the one with mages, genies, and Titans) and your hero also needs to habe enough mana for the Blinds and Ressurections.

Regarding music: the track from Might&Magic 6,7,8, Heroes of Might&Magic 3&4 *all* use the *exact* same sound bank (the only difference is HoMM4 contains a layer of vocals), so if you put all five soundtracks together, it's very consistent and you have a nice playlist, almost five hours long. I grew up playing Homm 4 since I was almost a baby (born 2001) and then some of 5. I couldn’t read at all back then (and the games weren’t in my native language anyways) so finding my saves or knowing details was impossible, but I loved playing with my youngest brother and tried to play myself (I would always accidentally start wrong saves and had to ask so much, well at least it was easier than playing mtg which my brother thought me around the same time, I had to memorise all our cards to play. We lived on the countryside and most older siblings had moved out so if he wanted to play a game with anyone he had to teach little me first, I was 3 or 4 years old at the time and loved watching him playing games) But then one faithful day in first or second grade I visited a classmate and there I saw the most beautiful game I had ever seen, HoMM 3. I was spellbound and soon asked my mom to get it for me, and a while later I got HoMM complete edition (all games from 1-5) and ever since HoMM 3 has been my favourite game (except Mtg)

Warband is an expansion off the first mount and blade game that essentially became a game in itself. The second game came out a couple years ago: Bannerlord. I think it's also very much checking out and brings some very much needed improvements to the mount and blade games. I'm suggesting Warband on staying with the theme of playing old games.

It's always interesting to see a new player's thoughts and how they navigate this game! I'm in my mid 20s but have played the game since I could talk thanks to watching my dad and being the inquisitive child I was, so I only have vague fluffy memories of being new and experiencing the wonder of exploring the game for the first time. Learning what all the units are and what they do, then about spellcasting and the magic system, and then artifacts and all the rest... I miss being filled with such wonder with what could be out there in the game! The lack of a proper tutorial is questionable to look back on, but only if you don't consider the manual the game came with that people back in the day would have happily read (with a proper attention span), and that I DO have very fond memories of reading through, as well as the physical copy of the Prima guide. It's also a shame that the campaign you played is from the 3rd set of campaigns and not the first, since the order in the menu screen is off - no idea why that was never patched! An (un)official expansion called Horn of the Abyss exists and provides so much new content (factions, campaigns, creatures, terrain, fixed bugs & graphics, etc.) - it's as close to an official expansion the game has ever received, and the quality equates to or surpasses that of the vanilla game depending on who you ask; think of "what if 3DO wasn't working on crunch time with budget constraints?" Another expansion called Day of Reckoning is on the horizon and also seeks to deliver this high-quality content in another new package. Both are definitely worth checking out! Lastly, I help maintain the wiki for the game (heroes.thelazy.net) which we update on an almost daily basis, so please do give it a browse and I hope you find it useful with learning more about the game should you choose to keep playing it!

This one, Heroes 2, and Heroes 4 are amazing games that I played. I liked 4 the best because the Heroes upgrade is more streamline and the Heroes fight in the battle. However, because of the latter, it can get very easy as you can just get major upgraded heroes in the campaign and not even have armies.

It's just sometimes obnoxiously a mid-2000 game, with everything making weird sounds by just hovering over them, which could get annoying really quickly.

Слова Катерины Айронфист из вступительного ролика - "Знамя Эрафии должно внушать уважение и страх! И никому не дано право оскорблять его!" - навсегда в сердце. I think HoMM3 is similar to the games featured on this channel because of music and intricate art-style, those two things combined together, when done well, create a masterpiece.

I really enjoyed seeing the opinion of a newcomer to Heroes 3. Honestly, introducing people to the Heroes series is one of my favorite things because it's just a wonderful strategy series. If you continue playing 3, I think your skill level will rise quickly, because there are a lot of similar concepts that carry over from 5. I do not think you are wrong for liking Heroes 5 and using it as a representation for the series. It is quite similar to Heroes 3 in many ways, but with 3D graphics and active heroes of course. In fact, I think 5 is actually fairly underrated. Visually, I think Heroes 2 actually looks *even better* than Heroes 3. Heroes 3 is just a little too "realistic" in my opinion, and the sprites read as a bit grainy because they are so detailed. In contrast, Heroes 2 sprites are more simplified, colorful, and stylized. It just looks incredibly charming, absolutely pristine sprite graphics. Heroes 3 is perhaps a deeper strategy game than 2, which is why I think most prefer it, but I actually like the simplicity and strong fantasy vibe I get from 2 more. I would say, even putting nostalgia goggles aside, Heroes 3 is still among the best strategy games of all time since it has inspired so many spiritual successors. If you want to look at something very recent, Songs of Conquest is a recent Steam game that very clearly derives inspiration from the Heroes series. I would also say that the older Heroes have objectively some of the best soundtracks of any videogame. Paul Romero is a classically trained composer and the music is widely regarded as incredibly beautiful - to the point that music from the games has even been performed by a live orchestra (search "Heroes Orchestra" on YT).

It's quite refreshing to listen to you testing a game. :) Also I loved intro on this. I know a girl here who plays Skyrim always and always read on the lore. It's weird but I see it being normal when you make it normal :D I would love for you to try Gothic 2 or Gothic 3 on old games to re-review them.

I recently tried playing this game for the first time in about 20 years a few months ago. I played it a bit and had some fun, but I didn’t feel too compelled to keep playing it for more than a few hours. I think for its time, this was a great strategy game. Ever since then, there are plenty of strategy games that offer so much more.

When i look at older games, even if i haven't played them: The thing that strikes me most is that the visuals are completely art directed and realism is most often impossible to really be relied. And despite any hardware limitations, you are there for gameplay. No hyper realism there for you to hang on to and therefore the game has to be good. "Cookie cutter" is also rarely in the description vocabulary i would use to describe things. Nowadays a lot of good and bad games look kinda similar, so to inexperienced players and untrained eyes, what is gaming? Its easier to "go astray" than ever.

HoM&M3 has a cult following in my part of the world, ie former Eastern Bloc (Poland, Czech Republic, Russia, Ukraine etc.) partly because its hardware & system requirements are low, allowing it to run on a potato (GLaDOS, eat your heart out!) plus the '90s era of gaming evokes fond memories in millennial gamers here, including me. Other old games people are still fond of are, among many others, Fallout 1 & 2 and the Command&Conquer series.

Oh, and about printing out the manual - I think you can like press F1 or find a helper file in a game directory that has text and screenshots explaining stuff. I remember it being pretty comprehensive, so it probably can be used for referencing at least, even if you don't want to sit down and study the whole thing.
@x3lander
@x3lander 21 час назад
Regarding the Tutorial - back in the day you had an accompanying manual in the form of a pdf file that explained everything about game interface and the basics about game mechanics. Look into your game folder and you will find it. Newer games try to do this in-game, but I like this older approach, you can use the manual as a form of reference book, to quickly find something you didn't pay attention to, or have forgotten after taking a break from the game for a couple of months or years.

I never ever played any game in this series but i definetly have read about this series in some old magazines that i used to have around the house back when i was a child, probably purchased by my older cousins. I am romanian and we used to have a magazine called LEVEL which used to review all of these games. I am sure that i read about Heroes of Might and Magic 5 in one of these magazines. I love Gothic, a game developed by Piranha Bytes back in 2000's.... Recommended if anybody around here is a more hardcore rpg lover. It is definetly more brutal in the eatly game than any elder scrolls game.

Heroes of Might and Magic III with all the expansions and in HD on PC still gives modern triple A strategies a run for their money. The best Heroes of Magic games have never been bettered in that 'style' of turn based fantasy strategy even my modern takes on them (that are rather good) such as 'Songs Of Conquest' on Steam and other gamer platforms.

It's both nostalgia and good games. Some games were just really good even back then, with the bad technology. With that being said, it still comes down to personal taste. I personally don't like Final Fantasy VII. It puts me to sleep, but I fully recognize that other people seem to love the game and it seems pretty high quality for the time it came out.

Aha, I remember... not playing this game specifically for I was already feed up with King's Bounty (original one), and bunch of Microprose titles like Colonization (waaay too many hours), Civilization, Masters of Magic (dark elven "artillery" and solo heroes), Master of Orion (doomstar fleets incinerating empires), X-COM 2 (proper underwater terror from the deep!)... by the time HoMM 3+ started getting really popular and "required experience" I moved to RPG/MMO... But from those days I would specifically recommend only two games to try. X-COM: Terror From the Deep - it have a way of mixing "fog of war" with underwater murkiness which works wonders for anxiety at every move (especially at higher difficulties). And maybe Colonization - although it is a sorta "lesser" Civilization, it does have a certain wild west "adventure" feel to it and also it really makes a point of playing with alternative history where your success somewhat depends on general knowledge of history.

The heroes games have a vast strategic and tactic depth. If you have sunk a few hundreds of hours into that game, there may still be methods you have still not encountered in your gameplay. I only learned the full potential of this game after a few beautifully designed scenarios that required careful planning and optimization of every step, creating highways of fast troop deployment over multiple movement ranges per round, selecting the perfect fitting troops and hero skills and utilizing every tactical advantage you can get on the battle maps. The game has a tremendous range of difficulty, up into scenarios and fights that appear to be completely impossible on first glance and become very satisfying as soon as you find out the game mechanics that lead to victory. HMM 3 and 4 are my favorite incarnations of this series.

I played a lot of HoMM 3 as a 10 year old. I never knew what I was doing and the memories are foggy. But every time I see that UI it pulls be back to sitting in the "computer office" and fighting my sister for computer time so she could play whatever Final Fantasy game was out (probably 8). I never played any of the other HoMM games. I think once Warcraft 3 came out I never really played any other strategy games, so I never got around to HoMM 4. (I understand one is real-time and the other is not but they scratch the same itch) Then, as you know, WoW came out and took up around 15 years of my gaming life. (I stopped playing in Shadowlands) So I always feel like there is a decade of games I missed out on.

I get to be the naysayer who was already pretty well done liking the series with 3. It felt like so much more of the same, and I was starting to get bitter that New World Computing was ignoring the RPG Series in favor of the strategy series. Fortunately 1C eventually brought back King's Bounty which was the best game to me in the original pantheon anyway!
