A friend just pointed out, that not only could the 3 swords represent Michael, Uriel and Saraqael betraying Aziraphale, but that the sword in the middle represents the Metatron, trying to separate the pair.

I think that’s further represented by the guy in the right corner with the mask on. It’s one of the Nazi zombies, but it could be a metaphor for an enemy hiding in plain sight, which is exactly what I think the Metetron is.

I was hoping that Saraquel, at least, was on their side and that Uriel and Michael would receive some retribution by helping them in the end. We didn't see Sandlephon in series 2, he was a really nasty piece of work, (remember he punched Aziraphael in the stomach in series 1) Perhaps, he will be back in series 3?

It brings to my mind their s1 conversation about how "The Big One" battle to come will be Heaven & Hell vs Humanity.
@mayhay102
@mayhay102 8 месяцев назад
If I think about what might happen in s3 I somehow have the feeling that one possible ally for Aziraphale might be Saraqael. She was the one who decided on sending the inexperienced Muriel to find out whether the powerful miracle was really about love - when she must have known that Muriel wouldn't be quite up to the job being cast into that pulsating life on earth after her extremely lonely desk job. She didn't stop Muriel showing Crowley the files about Gabriel in Heaven but even encouraged her to show him the 'trial' also. She is a bit overlooked by her superiors which is shown in the scene when Gabriel regains his memory and the only name he cannot immediately remember is hers. And in the final scene in the bookshop she looks as if she didn't quite agree with Michael's harsh speeches. So maybe she might be one to support Aziraphale in his new role. Crowley on the other hand sent Muriel on 'The crow road' - the title of the book he throws over to her to read - which she eagerly does when the Metatron finds her in the café. Might be some hint, too, as Crowley is being linked with crows in the Job episode.
@Sendarya
@Sendarya 8 месяцев назад
Agreed, concerning Saraqael. She seems to have a naturally big heart, and isn't ambitious like Michael and Uriel. Azi might find a few allies up there. The Crow Road is next on my to read list, so I can make those connections that they've laid out for us!

I love this idea! Plus Saraqael has some kind of a history with Crowley from his angel-days. I think he was lying when he said he didn't remember. She also refrained from turning Maggie and Nina into pillars of salt when he interceded and hustled them out of the shop.

I had this thought that the daggers represent not just betrayal but also the pain and suffering that Aziraphael will go through. His decision comes with a price, parting with Crowley and the life that he so deeply loves and that is paintfull to him, along with that pain we will realise truly that Heaven aren't the good ones and that will hurt a lot since it will shatter is beliefs all that he held as true and pure, the way he saw the world, haven and hell for over 6000 years will crumble. And that will hurt him deeply and because he doesn't see it all comming is like a stab in the back.

There’s one Big Clue missed in the analysis: the 78 on the left hand side of the record label. I happen to have 78s and at that speed you get about 5 minutes of music. Aziraphale got 2 records and they would be double sided since they are recorded after Shostakovich composed his music. 2 records with 2 sides = 20 minutes + 1 minute to switch the sides. So he knows exactly what he’s doing for the next 21 minutes because he’s dashing home to listen to his 2 new record.
@Sendarya
@Sendarya 8 месяцев назад
Well, that is the obvious meaning, although he takes a lot more than two records. I count a minimum of 4, and maybe 5, in the stack he leaves with. So, that's still not 21 minutes. That's probably why they used 78's instead of LP's in this scene though, so that it LOOKED like one thing, and hid the other so cleverly.
@JoMadge
@JoMadge 8 месяцев назад
Yes, we discussed this when we were trying to puzzle it out. My mother, who was born in 1930, had a decent collection of 78s, which are mine, now. As Sendarya said, he picked up a stack of them, not just two. Even so, your two record idea almost fits, as if he just listened to the first and second movement, it would indeed come out to just over 21 minutes. However, we hear him listening to the FOURTH (final) movement, well past the 21-minute mark.

I can't help but see the daggers and sword from the magic shop as the Tarot card, Four of Swords. You kind of have to dig into the meaning a little, since the card traditionally is read as a sign to rest and contemplate before moving forward (passivity and feminine energy, yada yada). But even the placement of the three daggers separate from the sword itself mimics the placement of the swords on the Tarot card (ryder waite deck). But here's my take: the card often stands as a suggestion to take a break from the world. To go to a place of introspection--usually a church or holy place--to figure out your next move. And that's exactly what Aziraphale does in the finale. Of course, for our angel, he's not going to rest and practice self-care, but it's kind of a cool subversion of the traditional meaning.
@Sendarya

Well, Neil is a master at subtle subversions. I like this idea! I just spent all of 5 minutes looking at the ryder waite deck, as you suggested, and now I want to learn more!

@JoMadge 8 месяцев назад
AHH, this is so cool! Thanks for sharing that. Just Googled and see that it can also represent a tomb or coffin (the Rider-Waite version you mentioned depicts the swords arranged around the tomb of a knight). In the shop, the swords are inserted in a coffin/tomb-like box, i.e the Sword Box magic trick, in which the magician's assistant is put in the box, the box is stuck full of swords, but then the assistant emerges unscathed in the end (in tune with the resurrection theme of the season). Just wow. If I had any doubt this was more than a coincidence, you just helped shrink it considerably. So much to ponder!

I just commented a couple minutes ago on the whole tarot card thing before I had gotten to your comment - glad to see I'm not the only Nutter on here😂 But I thought because of the placement of the swords and also because of the meanings, that it is more likely a combo of the Ace (the sword pointing down between their hands), and the Three (the ones piercing Aziraphale in the back - for that, the card would have to be sideways, but we all know there are readings where that is possible). The Three shows a heart being pierced, and with the placement in the back, at least one of those would be piercing the heart, at least the way I saw it. For me, the Four just didn't feel quite right - had to dig a little too deep for that one. I wish Neil would just pop by, tell us if we're right or wrong and give us all a cookie😂 Hi fellow Nutter❤ You're funny - I love you ...

If you look in some of the information on prime, on the first episode, there is a note saying that the Symphony No. 5 in D minor was actually recorded as a 33 and not a 78 in our world. It also says that one of the reasons it’s in the show is because Douglas McKinnon obsessively listen to Bernstein’s conducted work during the lockdown. @JoMadge in addition to that note on prime, I swear somewhere there’s a BTS clip or interview with Neil Gaiman where he’s like “unfortunately some of the records are the wrong size, but by the time we realized it was too late and it was something we just had to accept would be different in the show.” I can’t remember the context of this, so idk if he was talking about the jukebox records for everyday or the Shostakovich one, but I remember hearing it somewhere. I totally agree with you guys about the 21 minutes connection though, because I’ve listened to Shostakovich’s 5th and when I heard aziraphale talk about it in the show I was like… either he’s only talking about one movement or he’s completely wrong 😂
@JoMadge
@JoMadge 8 месяцев назад
@@GRHB-qg2ko Neil was talking about how the 45rpm singles of "Everyday" that were miracled into the jukebox had small-hole spindle inserts to make them more easily playable on multi-speed home record players, rather than the standard larger hole that a jukebox designed just to play singles would require. (Not sure I worded that clearly, but hopefully you get the gist).

so i got curious and looked up the meaning for the Three of Swords in a Tarot deck and - "This card depicts a fundamentally sorrowful experience- tarot readers suggest this may be in the form of a lost relationship, an accidental death, or some other form of not just depression or malaise but deeply emotional sorrow. When the card appears "reversed" in a spread, this is not usually read as meaning the "opposite" of sorrow, but rather a sorrow that is somehow mitigated by its circumstances or that is not as bad as it could have been. It is among the most negative cards within the tarot deck." (from Wikipedia) VERY interesting 👀 poor Aziraphale tho 😭

There's so much to discover in the music of S2, both the soundtrack and the music featured in the narrative. The motif from Wee Morag's death (second half of _I'm Going to Save Her)_ returning in the last part of _The End?_ nearly broke me. _Again._ Also, the fact that the track beginning the moment after the Metatron reveals the Second Coming is titled _The Biggest Decision._ All the songs about separation and heartbreak. _You Don't Own Me_ with its theme of being accepted just the way you are (with added layers when you know Lesley Gore was a lesbian in an era of institutional homophobia).

Hey, in the case of the swords in the magic shop, I just had a holy poopy moment - those are tarot card swords!!! I just went to my beginner's guide to tarot by Juliet Sharman-Burke (cards illustrated by Giovanni Caselli), and pulled the Ace, the Three and the Four of Swords from the deck. I figured it had to be either a combo of the Ace and Three, or the Four by itself. After reading the divination meanings, we can discard the Four at this point in the story. But, to be brief as possible, my book opened automatically to the Ace (like it just knew...) and a quote for that card is 'out of something evil, something good will come'. The Ace means sweeping change and dramatic beginnings. Something that may seem negative in the beginning may be a blessing in disguise.🤯 The Three represents a vision of sorrow and pain. We can only take the pain in our hearts, accept it and go beyond it. But the card also suggests that the pain is inevitable, possibly even necessary. It suggests that suffering and joy come from the same place and are never far apart.🤯🤯 D'you think I might be onto something? It certainly seems to fit the entire feel of this past season... If anyone wants to know, I can always consult my other 2 decks, but this one is a more classic deck, and I didn't think Neil would have had as much knowledge of the Cat Tarot or the Tarot of the Cat People. I would be happy to consult them as well though, if anyone's interested ❤ As always, ta so much Sendarya for a fantastic analysis!! I will definitely be listening to those pieces of music - that's right up my street as a music teacher and classically trained pianist!
@user-jq9jg9fe8d
@user-jq9jg9fe8d 4 месяца назад
I think the Ace and Three fits well - this separation and what they'll go through is negative, it's a massive sweeping change the to balance they maintained by not discussing their fears and the divide in their perspectives - But ultimately they will come out the stronger, personally and relationship-wise, for having to confront these things. And I think the Three and pain being both inevitable and necessary - I think that could hint about Aziraphale learning about what the Fall actually entailed, of him finally having to acknowledge that the idea of one side being always Good and the other always Evil is a toxic system in itself. I think it will be freeing for him to not feel guilt that who he is isn't very 'Heavenly', and let himself fully embrace his love for Crowley and Earth without that fear and guilt. Aziraphale is the Three because Crowley was already forced to go through that introspection when he Fell and chose for himself that he didn't want to be what Hell expected of him. He'd been trying to protect Aziraphale from having to go through that same struggle, but ultimately Aziraphale will be better off knowing - just as Eve was. At least that's been my interpretation.

I was actually trying my own analysis at good omens season 2's audible poetry The last I think 4 songs from: "I Forgive You" "Don't Bother" "The Big Decision" And "The End?" you know this made me think. Of all Shakespeare plays S1 went with Hamlet (while Romeo and Juliet seems like such an obvious choice). A play about a prince trying to ensure the country is lead by a good leader and not the corrupt one who sits on the throne now, uncertain about who he can/can't trust, the old ruler has been set aside/killed and now corrupt, immoral powers rule the kingdom. I've got a feeling Aziraphale relates more to Hamlet's situation than he lets on and the piece by Shostakovich would hint in a similar direction.

I believe that God has been usurped by the Metatron. And these would hint in that direction as well. In my mind, it comes down to the ineffable plan vs. the Great plan and I think the Metatron knows both, but doesn't like God's Great plan so he has found a way to get rid of her in order to stick with the ineffable plan (destroying humanity?).

Because I didn't know where the season was going, I initially thought it was just Aziraphale "modernizing" his musical tastes, lol, but a dissident stuck in a totalitarian regime is so on point for him. And I think the smile at the end is related to this as well - I can't help but think of him telling Nina that he's making his own plans without telling Crowley about them, and I think (hope!) that smile is the seed of his new plan. I studied musicology in grad school and I think I have to hand in my card because damn! The only thing I might add is to your point about it being put on a 78. Might be because they had to fabricate this prop anyway and because they had a whole lot of 78s anyway (Maggie had a box of them that got miraculously turned into Every Day) so availability. But more likely it’s the Confirmation for anyone that figures it out. There’s no way to fit a symphony on a 78. 78s are I think 3 or 4 minutes per side. Great for jukeboxes… where the pivotal clue actually was. So this might be them saying no you’re not overthinking this. It is definitely a clue.

Wow, what an excellent find! Obviously, the props department had to create these versions of the records (since no versions exist, as you said), and I hope it is as deliberate as all this. When I was rewatching an episode yesterday, it occured to me that, while most (if not all?) high-ranking angels wear rings, Aziraphale is the only one, as far as I've seen so far, who wears his on his right hand.

@@Sendarya yes, there! But I hope you don't mind if I post it here too, sonyou can read it. I've never used discord, but I'm tempted! I think I will! 😊 Here it goes: "It's an interesting phenomenon" It is! It wasn't like I didn't like it, but it was confusing by moments. But Zira and Crowley's dynamics are so cozy, I couldn't stop watching. 💜 I think there IS a point! How can balance exist if there's only one side? I was rambling about the Physics concept of balance, (I have a point later sorry if it takes long to achive it) in my language that word can be translated as two different words that are synonyms, but also different concepts, balance (as the spanish word for "equilibrio", I've found the word "equilibrium" as a translation, but I'm not sure if it fits) is refer to the physical ability of a body to maintain ALL its structures by carrying out forces that fight against each other, so that the body remains balanced and to overcome gravity, while the second concept ("balance" in spanish too) is the movement that a body makes when it leans to one side and the other, or forward and backward, up and down, is the dynamic movement. In English it souds so redundant, I'll try to explain it deeper, but it is a grammar nightmare to translate this concepts. I hope I don't make it even harder to understand. To simplify, in spanish "equilibrio" also means a very stable balance, while "balance" is the action of adding or taking weight to get "equilibrio"/a very stable balance, but if you go to a translator it would translate both as the same word. (See? Grammar nightmare). As I understand, God and Satan are the forces pulling and pushing from the sides, moving things up and down back and forward, unbalancing everything in an attempt to win their argument, and earth is the midground (the battlefield, it seems too) in this fight, while Aziraphale and Crowley have always stand in the inflection point, (they come and go but mainly they are) where everything converges. They have come all the way from their sides and reached the middle point, and they have danced around each other in a waltz that leads them to understand each other, to be in each other's place, and also understanding humanity, that is standing at the same place as them (I mean Earth). I really like the analogy that David Tennat has said about Aziraphale and Crowley, they are Ying and Yang. And ultimately I feel like that is their mission, unlike humans, Aziraphale and Crowley have power, they might be the force that counterbalances the actions of heaven and hell. That's why it's so important for Metatron to separate them. I like to picture it as if it all was an antique measuring scale, where heaven and hell are the weight pans on each side, God and Satan are the very weight in their respective sides, Earth is the central support point, humanity is the beam working as the axis that moves with the inertia of the weight placed at each pam, and our Ineffable duo are the force that balances the scale everytime it goes unbalanced. This is my theory about the Ineffable Plan. We talked about "balance" and "equilibrio", to me God, Devil, Heaven and Hell are the forces of chaos upon existence, chaos on the right (good) and on the left (evil), unbalancing the everything, Aziraphale (in all good there's some evil) and Crowley (in all evil there's some good) are counterbalance, dancing around right and left, spinning around in their cosmic waltz, balancing the scale (they are balance and counterbalance, Ying and Yang, the dynamic movement). And the Ineffable Plan is everything as a whole, is balance (equilibrio) achived by the forces maintaining ALL its structures by carrying out forces that fight against each other, so that the everything remains balanced and to overcome destruction. "What's the point of it all? Demons, angels". The point is Balance. Balancing (adding and taking weight from each side) the forces playing with the cosmo and keeping existence balanced (stable, en equilibrio). Or as Michael would say "keep the status quo static and, uh, quoey". I believe that Aziraphale and Crowley are God's insurance plan to keep everything spinning, to preserve the divine creation. Also I think God shipped them from the beginning too.😝 I hope this wasn't too tedious to read. 🙈
@Sendarya
@Sendarya 8 месяцев назад
@@ALeXZVaMpYRoCkZ Thank you for sharing that. I do see your point about balance, and agree. But heaven isn't good, and Crowley isn't evil with a little bit of good in him. there are other ways that we have sides, opposites, without choosing sides or labeling people as good or evil. Yin and yang aren't good and evil, they are forces of nature. It's the artificially constructed sides that must be deconstructed. The natural ones, darkness and light, joy and sorrow, the sun and the moon, those sort of opposites are the ones that bring balance. Ph, and your English is very good!!

@@Sendarya Hm, food for thoughts: we keep talking about Heaven not actualy being good and Crowley being so - can you define "good"? Because to my understanding, the original concept of that word wasn't "morally agreeable", but "in accordance with god's... orders" or something. And in that respect, who know who is good? It's... you know... ineffable :) That is basically the meaning of the Book of Job - which we have been carefully presented, hmmm.

Concerning the end of Season 3 I have a strong belief that Neil is going to give us some version of a happy ending only because I honestly can't see him spending literal decades with these characters and going through the last two seasons only to do what every other writer and director has done to queer couples in media which is to give them a sad ending, where they're not together. I believe Neil is likely aware of the way that Good Omens subverts our expectations of depressing LGBT representation and intends to continue that with a good ending. However, his desire (and general interest) to include the destroyed vision of the world from the cut scene in season 2 makes me believe that Season 3 will take on a darker tone than the previous seasons have been and that Aziraphale and Crowley's relationship and their own personal strengths will be seriously tested. And beyond that I can't help but think that he KNOWS that giving himself and the fandom anything other than a world in which the two of them together would simply be doing everyone a disservice as there likely will not be a season 4 no matter what.

Hello, First I apologize for my bad english as it is not my native language. Second thank you Sendarya for all your analyses and videos, they are very clever and comforting in a way, Third, thank you all for your comments, I didn't read them all (would be easier in French!) but I really appreciate the ones I did. I've discovered good omens very recently and only saw it twice yet, in french and in english with subtitles. I certainly need to see the 2 seasons again and again to fully understand every idea you all develop in the comments. But I also have many questions in mind concerning the themes you explore in your videos. This one, for example, about what could happen in S3: was it worth talking about the second "book" on propheties by Agnes Nutter, "the saga continues" to have it burnt at the end of saison 1? Did Anathem really burn them? Do they not exist elsewhere? Aziraphale as a bookshop keeper could find them or ask Muriel to look for them. They certainly contain clues to the second coming??? What do you thing? am I wrong? Is it relevant to the story? Perhaps an answer is in Terry Pratchett's book but I did not read it yet! sure I will/should! Another "lighter" question : why do the ETs that Newton met on his way to Tadfield have duck faces?
@Ladyalice467

Oh my! This one had me simultaneously bouncing up and down and kicking myself, which is, I assure you, anatomically pretty demanding! Bouncing because you reference three classical works which I love, and know well: kicking myself because I didn't spot the things you point out so eloquently. OK, I'll let myself off the hook re the concertos, but I should have got the Symphony 5. It is, absolutely, one of the greatest musical works of the 20th century, and one of the cleverest, The 4th movement which Azi is listening to, could be interpreted by state watchdogs as a huge triumphal tribute to the Soviet Union - but as we listen, we can hear it as a grotesque caricature, the composer actually thumbing his nose at the whole edifice. And in an earlier movement, there is a passage which to me has always sounded like absolute desolation: with the violins pulsing softly underneath, a theme winds its way up and down, going nowhere, fining no resolution. For me it has always created an image of the gulags, of a prisoner sitting at a window looking out, while the snow falls silently over an endless, monotonous landscape. An image of utter hopelessness, and sterility. Can't help wondering if one or both of our ineffable ones are about to encounter something like this. As for the piano concertos, yes, the Shostakovitch is bright, the final movement bubbling and giddy as Aziraphale as his delightful best, and yes, the Ravel is jazzy, But for me, the heart of each one is in the slow 2nd movement. The Shostakovitch is heart-meltingly romantic, wiistful, song-like. It's the way Aziraphale looks at Crowley. The Ravel is in a very slow waltz time, and just aches with tenderness and yearning - and I know just which tender-hearted, and by now, rather weary demon, I think it might represent. Thanks Sendarya, yet again for your work and for making sure Jo Madge got full credit. Phew! Love this fandom!

I have a thought on the 78rpm “mistake”. Sorry to those that know but, many if not most, record players require you to select both the 33 and 45rpm options to play a 78rpm record. So to play the music, you need two speeds. One goes a little faster than the other.

In the book, Aziraphale loves to collect misprinted Bibles so a "misprinted" record label seems to fit. Especially if he connects the sides to him and Crowley. Old hidden subtext behavioral patterns die hard. It also shows he's still in a similar midsetto mist of season 1, which is reinforced by his countering to Crowley about his side being evil and heaven the good guys at the end of episode 6. He's rebelling a bit but still stuck under the same repressive regime of thinking.

Those swords (and, visually, the magic store in general) make me think of tarot cards. The three of swords shows three swords piercing a heart. I don't use them myself, but I googled the meaning: "The Three of Swords shows a heart pierced by three swords, representing the pain inflicted by words, actions and intent on the emotional and physical self. The dark clouds gathering in the background mirror this pain but offer the hope that, just as the storm clouds will disappear, so too will the pain and hurt you are experiencing."

Ace of Swords (Inverted / blade down between them) Clouded judgement and lack of mental clarity around a specific situation. Oh well, I guess he’ll be able to race his Bentley down the lanes, and he’ll be with his Angel. And he’ll be able to see the stars better than in the city. Maybe that’s enough for him. I originally thought so too but after watching season 2…he just looked so tired, so done with it all. The only time he even drives his car is to and from Aziraphale’s. And the implication from “we both get plenty of use out of it” is that this is Crowley’s normal now, he basically lives there and only leaves to sleep. Crowley’s the one who spends the season imploding because their precious peaceful existence has been ruined by heaven and hell. He was happy with the monotony. He’s the one fighting every step of the way to avoid excitement and adventure while Aziraphale is actively getting involved. The way things are at the moment I think he’d be happier in the cottage than Aziraphale would. Also Britain is a pretty small island. The distance between the outskirts of London and the South Downs is like an 1hr and that’s driving normal speeds not Crowley speeds while disregarding all laws of physics and traffic. Day trips are very doable.

@@MsKnowItAll26 Yes, I suppose we must allow Crowley to retire and not have to entertain us forevermore. Perhaps as these two supernatural entities become more human, they will become mortal. 7:34 Bernstein's version of Shostakovich's 5th in D minor was released in 1959, about a decade after the LP had been introduced. While 78s continued to be manufactured in India until the 1980s(!), it's not likely that this was released in that format anywhere. I also checked back catalogs of Nauck's Record Auctions, and none of them list a Brandorf music label or anything similar. If this is also a clue, it's well hidden. It also could simply be part of the Good Omens universe or a small miracle.
