For Mariah the First thing is the musicality, is the fact that her runs must fit the song, the melody of the song, here 07:03 there is no melody and she doesn't necessarily have to control her speed to fit the melody and you can see the difference. She is so fast that sound robotic / autotuned. One of a kind. Queen of melisma. Unmatched. Always.
Tori once said on her IG live that she liked playing around and doing bad runs on purpose when she’s tuning her guitar and that’s how some of these people be sounding during their actual performances 😭
That Faouzia clip caught me off guard. That is so difficult, but also placing a riff like that into a song is so hard without it being too much is even harder. She maintained emotional quality and it almost seems like it just happened naturally even though we know it's a precise choice. She is a master, I am loving everything she does lately. She deserves to become a legend one day. Christina is always one who just clicks for me. I feel like she understands what it is to be an artist as a vocalist, there's always so much emotion and so many stylistic elements as well as clever and creative choices (so many of which seem to be spontaneous). She really is a gift. Weirdly I actually prefer a lot of Mimi's off the cuff random not actually part of a performance riffs to most of her main ones. They feel more soulful, like she's just doing what she feels. I'd really love to see her let go more when she performs and not give a fuck. Imo that's when she's at her best. Ariana's agility has developed so well over the years. You can tell she's worked really hard on it because the hard work has paid off. She's consistently coming out with some killer moments of agility. I am huge fan for sure.
I don't know how or why! But the agility of Mariah on 2013 was like literally UNPARALLELED! Even in her prime she was THAT fast, at the point that she sounded like robotic/autotituned

I love the recognition to Scott of Pentatonix. People usually appreciate the agility and the high notes of Mitch, but Scott have a lot of potential for runs too!

I loved how you highlighted Jennifer Hudson and Avery Wilson. There's actually a video of the two singing a donny hathaway song together. You can hear the runs and riffs with such clarity. Not many people would think of runs and riffs when it comes to Jennifer but when she hits a good pocket she can do them. Avery is a BEAST with the runs. He be doing runs similar to gospel singer Micah Stampley. Love this series. OOO harmonies love Pentatonix.
So many of those singers are literally so amazing and agile with their runs. But Mariah stands out for me in a way that its not only the precision of the run but she does it while doing transitions. And before u say I'm biased, let me say tori kelly is = or if not, more agile than mariah. It's just that mariah's technical creativity fascinates the most.
And not even in par... Transitions are actually one of the most important part of the agility, like other techniques that Tori never showed And... I mean... 07:03 😭

I always think I'm a pretty decent singer until I hear Mariah Carey sing. The heartache of knowing I will never be half as good as her 🥲. But it's ok, at least we are all blessed with her voice
