Chapter 100 of the manga was the one where they did the ceremony with the barrel before heading into Grand Line!

As people have pointed out on previous vids, these storylines in the desert have largely been anime-only filler... Ace in the manga just saved Luffy from Smoker, caught up with them again on the ship (Luffy getting separated from the others in Nanohana didn't happen), asked Luffy to join Whitebeard and gave him that paper, and then left, taking out the ships on the way. So parts of these desert adventures happened in the manga (like the food getting stolen by birds, and the camel), but most of it was filler.

Always remember: No matter how much we grown adults in the West love One Piece, we're not the target demographic, either for the manga or for the anime. The target demographic is 13-year-old Japanese boys. So big moral stories about perseverance and dedication and never giving up on your big dreams are basically the Japanese version of a Very Special Episode.

Alabasta is a fun kingdom. The king doesn't see himself as above the populace and isn't afraid to make a fool of himself or be a total goofball. The flashback shows how unfortunate the rebellion really is, as the only real bad guy there is Crocodile.

16:38 The newspaper that distributes wanted posters is global so it's likely Ace is well known in the east blue as well, the explanation for why luffy didn't see any of those is because he doesn't read the newspaper or anything, he is pretty much completely unniformed on world events.

"This is Luffy without powers" It is super important to remember that Zoro exists, has no powers, and has been established to be a match blow for blow with Luffy. Luffy without powers doesn't bounce back cannonballs or stretch a hundred yards to land a punch, but he still shatters stone columns with his bare hands and intercepts movement faster than the eye can see. Luffy with no powers is still a monster. Never forget that.

I'm rereading the manga along side reactors, it crazy how the change things in the anime and drag it along. I read these chapters so quick, and the addition to ace, even it nice to have around really makes things weird

These several episodes that you’ve seen are what is called mixed filler, where parts of the episodes have canon manga material and others are anime exclusive. I think you could probably pick out some of the part that are filler. The Ace goodbye is canon but Scorpion is not.

Ace left so much earlier in the manga, after destroying the ships, but he's cool so they made him stay longer in the anime lol one of the few times where fans don't mind fillers that much. Also why Ace attitude in these eps was a bit weird, they probably didn't really know much about his personality.

If you thought this was quick, Ace peaced out right after blowing up the ships in the manga! So yes, it was filler. They wanted to Ace to stick around for more than an episode or two and so came up with a reason for him to travel for a bit. It is a pretty funny episode. Chapter 100 in the manga was them crossing over Reverse Mountain and into the Grand Line!

It's cute that you assume Dip and Chip have a home to go back to, and aren't just homeless and living in a desert. That being said, they're filler characters, so who cares.

The episode numbers don't mean much, because it doesn't correlate to the manga. Chapter 100, on the other hand, was the Reverse Mountain entry into the Grand Line.

You know, I really don't enjoy the Alabasta filler usually but I was happy to have a laugh watching your reaction to it. If nothing else, this was fucking hilarious.

It's good to have dreams, and this show actually shows us that what it means to have one.. and sometimes we get blinded along the way how to achieve it and choose the fastest path.. then we lose because we are not doing it the right way... this is very relatable specially for the strawhats! In the begin it was about 2-3 chapters an episode but as the anime goes on it does start to drag because they switch to .5-1 chapter an episode so they didn't catch up. I think them entering the grand line was actually chapter 100 of the manga. And as far as OP fathers go, Scorpion is probably top 10 😭😭 Like I can literally only think of like 3 good dads

so the reason this send off episode for ace isn't more about him and luffy is...this is filler. Originally he gave luffy the piece of paper after destroying the baroque works ships and then fucked off. the anime had him travel with the crew into the desert for some reason. WHile cool to have him get more screentime, it's not a lot since he doesn't really do a whole lot and they can't really do that much with him as a character in case it ends up being contradicted later. So that may be why his send off may feel off, cause his send off was supposed to happen at an earlier point.

90% of the times luffy gets dumb dumb is so they can link to filler, it stands out because it isn't the authors writing most of the time. The entire bounty hunter guy is filler, ace left at nanohana forever ago in the manga. It's got funny bits but alabasta has really bad filler for keeping the story coherent

It seems weird because episode 101 is about 99% filler; the last bit when Ace leaves is canon. 102 is all filler, even though it presents something important for later.

Well, Chapter 100 was when they got into the Grand Line, Episode 100 didn't fall on a part with as much kick.

Same question different context... How do people have like 30 dogs if they are poor? Because what makes them poor is those 30 dogs. Dude in this episode would be middle class if he had not wasted his money on Bazookas and such.

We'll have to review that statement that Luffy doesn't learn anything in this arc, by the end of it.

I don't find Luffy to be dumber compared to before, it's more that they keep comparing him to Ace, surprised by how more mature he feels compared to his brother. Ace time with the Strawhats is also all filler, so it's not like in canon the crew keeps doing it, just a way to fill up time in these eps.

The One Piece world only has an economy when it is plot relevant.

Weirdly enough, you get even less time with Ace in the manga, which is one of the reasons people don't complain about the filler in Alabasta as much as they do in other parts of the story. More time with Luffy's awesome bro! :3

Ace being with the crew at this point is pure filler - the scene of Ace leaving in this episode should happen after he burnt that BW fleet on the shore of Katorea. Arabasta has a weird mix of filler and canon, which probably is such a beaten horse at this point in the arc, by what I remember of previous comment sections XD

I feel like this filler dad might have inspired a character from One Piece Movie 6. Which came first? Also, I agree that Luffy acts pretty dumb this arc, especially during these mixed filler episodes where they add comedy bits as well as tangents. Some of them I really liked my first watch but some I found a tad annoying. These episodes tend to feel a little flat and long. Not bad, but… quaint? Love the random ostrich

its been a long time since i read the manga but iirc this is filler, ace being with the group at all the past few episodes was filler, and him leaving at the end here is the end of the filler.
