They didn't change Gol D Roger's name to Gold Roger for the live action. You're just not supposed to know that at this point in the story. It's just that in the beginning of One Piece he was only known as Gold Roger until you get to a certain point in the story it's revealed his name is actually Gol D Roger. There is a in story reason for it that is a spoiler.

Nerdy's giddy excitement and Clarous's bewildered confusion is exactly what I wanted from this. I agree with you Nerdy. It's such a brilliant adaptation. There's a lot of great decisions and they nail the tone and little details. The casting is incredible. I loved every episode, and I hope you do to. As for why it's called "the One Piece" as far as I know only the English version of the opening has Roger call it that. In every other version, it's kinda vague why everyone calls it that. I don't blame you getting confused. I thought he called it the One Piece in the anime opening too.

Regarding why they call Him Gold Roger to begin with, the same thing happened in the anime. It isn't revealed that his name is Gol D. Roger until way later into the story. In fact, if I remember correctly, you're still in the Little Garden Arc, and his name isn't revealed as Gol D. Roger until Drum Island, many episodes after, so even your knowledge about it probably comes from somewhere else, since at the point of the story you are at that reveal still hasn't happened yet.

25:03 there are like 4 versions of Roger's execution in the anime itself , so in the later versions they show shanks, mihawk and other characters watching the execution. Many people got inspired from Rogers words and became pirates.

This reaction was so fun to watch with the constant contrast to Nerdy's shit eating grin and Clarus's look of bewilderment at what she was seeing.

Be aware that this 8-episode series has managed to convince a good many to actually begin their journey through the anime. Let's see where Clarus is at it's end.

The thing I love the most about this is him basically getting to experience how we viewers feel when we watch the anime OP reactions. It's SO precious how he smiles knowingly when she asks questions he knows the answers to but won't spoil 🤭❤

I love Nerdy's reaction to watching One Piece anime and now the LA. Let's go. Seeing him so excited watching the LA makes me smile and excited with him. So eager for upcoming LA episodes. But I feel bad for the great spoiler coming ahead even Nerdy is on episode 7x in anime. Anyway, still a joyful ride I speculated.

when i started the anime, it was a bit overwhelming, but think of it like this, instead of it being a lot to catch up to, its so much to enjoy

I’m glad y’all enjoyed this! As a huge OP fan(I just got caught up last week after YEARS) I LOVED how they managed to capture the essence of the AniManga and didn’t shy away from the silliness. The production design and Hair & Makeup team KILLED it. Of note, you’re gonna notice some WILD footwear, and apparently it’s because Netflix rules forbid open toed shoes on set for liability reasons. Hence Iñaki Godoy not having Luffy’s iconic simple Sandals. Also Zoro’s Actor Mackenyu was also in a Ruroni Kenshin adaptation I believe and uh….is Sonny Chiiba’s Son, yes, THAT Sonny Chiiba

I love how bro really became a One Piece fan. Like the way he's laughing all goofily every time something fun happens, really made my day.

I love how much Nerdy is into the whole episode and Clarus is sitting next to him, being so confused about his excitement. xxD Let's hope Nerdy is right and the live-action will get Clarus so hooked on One Piece that she will want to watch the anime. ;)

The gold roger is actually somewhat accurate. The Marines call him Gold Roger to hide the fact of the D... IDK where you are in the anime now, so I don't wanna spoil much, but the D is important.

Gold Roger never said “One Piece” in his speech. The treasure came to be known that through people referring to it as such. One Piece (WAN PISU) is actually said in English so the dub tried to do something funny with him, actually saying the words. But i’ve interpreted it as the legend of his treasure’s name that was given by the people searching for it.

A gentle reminder that this live-action series embraced the silliness and over-the-top moments from the original, and it worked!

At last, the time has come for the Nerdy Nightly OPLA reactions! As a longtime OP fan, I found the spin they did for the Live Action very enjoyable (though there are a few things I took issue with, but we'll get to that in another reaction). Reminded me of watching Xena, Sinbad, and Hercules back in the late 90's/early 00's. Already getting a kick out of your excitement, and Clarus' confused reaction to your excitement, lol.

love how Nerdy knowing context is just him getting so giddy about so much. But I will say though, little bits here and there that may seem changed is because they come from the manga instead of the anime as well as added bits here and there since its working off 20 years of material.

Just a note but Yasopp always had just a headband with his name, never a tattoo. Also as others said until episode 90 or 91 of the anime they only use the name as "Gold Roger" and its the name in his bounty poster, but his real name is Gol D. Roger is first used at those episodes (and there is a reason for it way later). Also the scene of Roger execution is closer to what we know way later as in the manga/anime with Mihawk, Shanks, Buggy (and others) are know to be there at that moment, however when it was first animated (aka where you are now) that information was not know. There is a lot of other things like that because the producers are huge fans (and Oda did help a lot in the project) so they could use current information to make the world more accurate. Like the bounty wall in this episode was various references. Another example is the scene where Luffy eats the Devil Fruit as they went back and changed a prompt due to the latest chapter at the time making it a great easter egg

Clarus’ eagle eye was catching all of the continuity mistakes. 👁️ Nerdy’s giggles of excitement and approval was adorable.

2:55 in the anime/manga, Roger never called his treasure the One Piece either. Sort of a Mandela effect around that.

Live action Luffy is slightly different, but he certainly nails the vibe and intensity.

Nerdy, if you had waited to complete at least 400 or 500 episodes of one-piece anime and then started to watch live-action, then you would have gotten way more easter eggs than what you have gotten right now. Easter eggs are everywhere in the live action from music to wanted posters to even random character mentions. But anyway hope you enjoy this.

I think the Anime version makes more sense, personally. Shanks wouldn't want to let that treasure out of his sight for a second. He just didn't expect Luffy to BLOODY EAT THE DAMN THING IN A SECOND

Two things made me very sad here: that we aren’t gonna get the next episode for a week, and that they totally edged us on choosing the algorithm goddess. WHICH ONE IS IT NAMI OR ALVIDA WE NEED TO KNOW! :D

THIS is what I call a good adaptation.

@Nerdy: one thing I think you may not have picked up on is that Garp is the officer overseeing Roger's execution, since his name isn't mentioned in the scene, you're still used to thinking of him in the anime as wearing the face-obscuring dog hat from the Kobymeppo cover story, and he doesn't show up again until the end of the episode, looking a fair bit different due to it being nearly a quarter century later (so it's entirely plausible you wouldn't connect him back to the guy in the prologue and realize it's the same character). Personally I think this is a brilliant change vs having it be just some random marine, though to fully explain why would be a bit of a spoiler.

You are gonna have SUCH a good time with this series. I only saw so much of One Piece, but this series does it all justice. I've NEVER seen a better live-action adaptation of a manga/anime. You'll probably pick up on more easter eggs than I can.

The casting was so strong in this show.

24:30 Noo! Dude, that's a spoiler! He's always been called "Gold Roger". We don't actually learn that he shares Luffy's middle initial and that the letter "D." has hidden relevance until what's probably gonna be in season 2 of this show.

I have to say - the live action version was my first exposure to the series and I really love the show. It's a great series with a great story and I already can't wait for Season 2.

Man with beard (Nerdy?) is adorable-and I mean that in an honest, non-demasculinizing way. Despite being emotively muted (in comparison to him), I agree with the majority of his takes. Switching gears, I’m also impressed by the keeness of the woman with red hair (Clarus?). She gives off ASD vibes with the tree-for-the-forest and similarly muted emotions-so like me-and yet, (despite having seen this show upwards of ten times) she has spied things I have never. That keenness of flawed-or-odd details is a money-making skill in the right context.

Now you know how Luffy got his scar under his eye. The Anime is great but it omitted A LOT of things from the original Manga that this Live Action version kept in. The Live Action version also added a lot of nods and references to Oda's work.

I never really watched or read One Piece even though I've been an anime fan for over 20 years, I had an absolutely wonderful time watching the Live Action and I don't know if I'll have time to catch up on the source material but I've been seriously considering it after seeing how much love was poured into the live action series

I tried watching the OP anime at one time and had trouble getting into it, but then the Live action came along and I loved it. So much so that it helped me get back into the anime. I skipped forward in the anime to where the live action left off and now I'm hooked and am now arriving at Alabasta. I am binge watching to keep just ahead of Nerdy's reactions to the anime.

Yeah man, I absolutely loved every minute of every frame of this adaptation. I think we've all said at some point or another 'it just needed more episodes' for so many shows now, and I think this adaptation in particular, demonstrates the cope in that for all of us. Would this have been better with 10 or 12 eps? Of course. But the fact it was 8 didn't mean this had to be shit story telling like so many others that we make excuse after excuse for. It's amazing what happens when you get writers who clearly prioritise adapting the existing characters personalities and narrative arcs, and not inject their own bs into it for whatever reason. This was a joy, an absolute treat amongst a pile of disrespectful dogshit last year - cant wait to see the rest of your reviews!

Netflix fkukked up my favorite moment. When Koby asks Luffy if he can be a Marine. Luffy said" How would I know". Given the rythm and the fast pace Koby decided for himself, rather than make a promise to some one else

whoops, you mentioned the live action being adapted from the anime, but the anime itself is an adaptation from the Manga. To be clear, this show and the anime are on the same footing. The manga is the source material. I think this is important to distinguish because MOST people starting the Live Action start with "I wonder what this _adaptation_ has ruined or not ruined", using *adaptation* like it's the only thing that matters, not fully realizing the anime is also an adaptation and it doesn't get flack about it. The *story* of one piece is being told again. The only real *adapting* going on is the change of format, which changes a lot automatically. Just like how the anime was changed to be slower paced to fit the "Saturday morning cartoons weekly episode" format. This show is the _story_ of One Piece suited to real actors and live sets. So...emphasizing _adaptation_ is just us giving flack where zero flacks need to be given. Let us give zero flacks and judge the show on its own merit and stop emphasizing that it's adapting something because that is criminally obvious anyway. I have spoken 🧙‍♂ -- rando on the internet

Woooo been waiting for this reaction for a while! Huge kick seeing how giddy Nerdy is as he compares the adaptation to the anime src he is familiar with. Clarus looks pretty whelmed so far, like she is humoring Nerdy, but it's a really fair point how breakneck the pace is. Will be fun to see if the characters grow on her.

Nerdy being excited at spotting young Shanks while Clarus not noticing the hype is exactly how me (OP fan, caught up with the manga) and my wife (no exposure to OP) watched the Live action

I've watched a lot of the cast interviews for this show, its very apparently that they're all super fans of the anime and that comes through so much in their acting in the show. THey were very worried about not doing the show justice.

The Live Action is more about seeing the world of Op and the characters in real life settings, given ODA personaly handpicked the actors, meaning if they were real this is who they would be so its amazing for the fans just to see the characters come to life, ODA said if Luffy was from our world he would be Brazilian, but the actor for luffy is Mexican so it still fits, it was my ddream to play luffy so seeing another mexican play him is like hes' carrying on my will!

I love, love the live and the castings. I think they did a great job bringing the world to life.

What impressed me is that they were confident enough to adapt as much as they did, and what they changed was sometimes better than the anime.

Gol D Rogers name was revealed later yes, but also his Last name is Gol and his First name is Roger. SPOILER: Just like Monkey D Luffy and Monkey D Garp share a last name. And Monkey D Dragon does as well. Ace therefore would have been Gol D Ace.

So glad you guys posted this, I probably wouldn't have watched the show otherwise. Knowing nothing of the story other than what it's based on, watched ep. 1 and it was the most ridiculous yet enjoyable episode of TV that I have seen in a long time! Agree with everything Nerdy said, esp. about Luffy's interaction with his "crew", his wonder and encouragement. Just makes yeh feel good 😊 Also like the way, so far, that they have written Nami, not a "girl boss" but very competent and capable within realistic ways. Fun show, looking forward to the rest.

Generally, when we like something and we are passionate about it, we like to show it to the people we live with the most. A lot of the outfits the crew wear are taken from cover pages and concept art - Nami's outfit in her first appearance was based on the original design for her where she used an axe. The team making this really did their homework on the details.

Gold Roger is his nickname, whereas Gol D. Roger is his name. But just like the adaptation, he's introduced as Gold Roger. Also, I have no idea what you're talking about with Yasopp. He doesn't have a tattoo. He's always been shown w/ a headband with his name on it.
