It's a crime that these guys are NOT in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Their bias against progressive rock is so evident. Supertramp is generational and timeless at the same time. Brilliant!
John Bonhams favorite group which is high praise indeed. Supertramp was loaded with percussion. Rick became a master percussionist before he moved over to drum on the piano. So, you know Bob Siebenberg had to be great. Rick as a youngster started off faking the organ in order to get a job. Supertramp is the perfect blend of blue sky Michael Jackson played by Roger mixed with a more heavy grounded Black Sabbath played by Rick - the main difference being that Roger not only could play an instrument, but multiple ones.
It sure was. I bought it after hearing Logical Song on the radio and loved every song on it, including this one. This was in my car cassette deck for months. Great music for drives
@@kirbygene : Right there with ya. The Logical Song really spoke to me, especially being in my twenties af the time. The production quality of the entire album was incredible on a nice sound system.
@fredrickneitzche6748 It's not when you were born that matters most. It's how the music impacts your soul. Does it grip you, envelope you in its melodies, does it move you, groove you and suit "your cup of tea." How does it all travel within, delight you, embrace you, cause you to sin. Matters not what your age Let the music 🎶 🎵 dance within thee And bring out your glee. For matters most Is the impact within thee.
Yes it gets more praise then you'll know. That solo didn't get away trying to fly under the radar. It's etched in everybody's mind fortunately. Textures galore!
I’m sory but… this is EXACTLY the sound of the record… same nuances on the vocal parts etc. This can’t be a playback… or, this session is the one recorded for the Breakfast… album ?
I'm a musician. I discovered Supertramp in 1978 when I was 12 years old. Now, I'm 58. From then, I listen and I've listened the Supertramp music, every day, yes, every day of my life !
Funny. I had to reply because this band is what actually awoke the composer in me. I'm 57 and lived with them as a teen too. Made me realize how fundamental music is to my inner being they did!
Not a musician, but an avid concert-goer during the 70's and 80's. Saw Supertramp during the Breakfast in America Tour. They were awesome. Seen many musical talents of that era. Supertramp was among my top 4 concerts.
I belatedly got into Supertramp, though I always enjoyed the Breakfast In America album. It's too bad a rift developed between Rick and Roger, with Roger ultimately leaving the band.
Supertramp was one of those bands whose songs I couldn't name when I tried to come up with any songs of theirs, but then when someone would play me songs by them, I'd realize I'd heard a bunch of their songs and never knew who they were by.
I when I was 18 I worked the night shift in a local factory. I had breakfast in America on my 8 track tape player and I loved it so much I’d listen to it every night on my way home. If ‘Take the long way home’ came on before I got home, no matter if it was 2 in the morning, I’d drive extra miles just to hear the song to its end. These guys were great musicians.
The 70s music will put you on another planet that no one will understand unless you have a love of the 70s music. You don't need drugs or alcohol to appreciate the best music ever. God....take me back to the 70s and leave me there....I'll be just fine.
I have noticed that with several other Midnight Special videos that have been posted to RU-vid. I am wondering if the people posting the videos replaced the soundtrack with the studio version. I noticed this with a posting of Prince's "I Wanna Be Your Lover", and, I believe with a posting of Starbuck's "Moonlight Feels Right". With the Starbuck song, someone else posted the same video with the live Midnight Special track, which was how I confirmed this.
I just found that psychedelic music on You tube. I cant stop listening to it.4,5,6 hours straight. I just did my whole shift listening to it. Brings me back the the beginning of early FM radio. No nothing just solid (Id call it) progressive music.
Because, I believe, it is not real. I've listened to this album thousands of times, and this seems to be the exact studio recording that they are lip syncing/fake playing along with. Which would also explain the fade out at the end...
You too? So am I! So I'm not the only one all this time who has been hiding his actual identity online. Mainly cuz I don't want all the hassles, man. ~ Love, Methuselah
It's nice to hear and see the end solo being played in its entirety, most radio stations cut it short every time, it's maddening because it is a great solo , it's in my top 10 list , for what that's worth.
Time to pay the bills as the DJ's used to say. Probably caught he'll from the station manager who didn't give a hoot about the guitar solo if he didn't cut it short .
My Uncle is Rodger, just love everything Supertramp, saw them for the first time as a full band at 3 to 4 years old and I still remember it. But I have the utmost respect for Rick and without their very different styles Supertramp wouldn't have been amazing. One of the Greatest bands of all time. And very unique.
Newsflash Cara DICKler: you can be popular and successful and still be UNDERRATED: “not rated or valued highly enough.”… maybe SUPERTRAMP is constantly mentioned in your social circles as one of the greatest bands of the 70s but you can bet most do not. Maybe it’s you who shouldn’t use it Because it’s obvious you don’t know what it means..
Huh? They were absolutely massive in their era. Worldwide too. Everyone, I mean everyone I knew listened to them. They were in heavy rotation on FM, too. Maybe they don't get written about or mentioned much these days, but Good God, man, that was a half century ago. What does "underrated" even mean in a case like this?
Just that! They’re not mentioned nearly as much as they should given what they’ve contributed and achieved and I think thats largely because they stopped touring and recording years ago. But ask anyone today under the age of 35 what they think of Supertramp and they’ll say WHO?
Good question. Guess they’ll have to wait until the wokesters at the HOF induct all their favourite two bit rappers like NWA, Puffy Combs, Eminem and Missy Elliott first? 😂
A guy I worked with was horrified his teenagers discovered Supertramp. I was well pleased. Too bad The Midnight Special didn't record more performances.
Roger moved to the town I grew up in, he played at a bar one night with a local band and my friend Annette and I and everyone had a blast dancing and laughing with him. Good days gone. Annette is in Heaven, Roger still lives there and I'm just having a good memory. Is that okay RU-vid? Lol.
England is a place notably full of ordinary looking chaps that in truth are full to the brim with extraordinary talents, but are just too humble to crow about it.
Supertramp were a British rock band that formed in London in 1970. They experienced their greatest global success in 1979 with their sixth album Breakfast in America.🎺🥁🎷🎸❤️
I remember my friend was going to quit piano lessons, and then he heard this. Went and bought the album and learned it over a rainy weekend. Then his teacher showed him how to really pull it off. Needless to say he kept up with the lessons and had a great job at a piano bar for a few years.
Please stop saying they were “underrated”. They were huge and deservedly so! Then time went by, as it does, and new trends and new talent comes along and it becomes their time to shine. Rinse, lather, repeat. It always has been that way and always will. Otherwise music would have never moved past Frank Sinatra, teenybopper music in the 50’s and Elvis. It’s not like it lessens their legacy one bit.
I saw them live in concert at Lloyd Nobel Center in Norman OK on May 1st 1979. It was a great show playing this song and all their other hits. Breakfast in America has been released the month prior and was a Huge success! I was 24 yrs yng.
I've seen several great shows at the Lloyd Noble over the years. I wish I could have seen Supertramp then but I was only in the 7th grade, and May 1st, 1979 was a Tuesday - a school day, so no Supertramp goodness for me. ha!
@@rickwheeler5496hi fellow OKie! 1st concert I saw was Three Dog Night in Tulsa @ age 11, in 1970. My dad dropped me and my friend off downtown and picked us up on same corner afterwards. Being the youngest of 4 kids with tired parents has its advantages! 😉
Radio also controlled by one giant company. At least in the US. So that meant that, instead of hundreds of DJs with a playlist and some freedom to choose a local band or a band they liked and wanted to play, the vast majority of DJs had to play the list the single corporate office gave them. We lost the soul of radio.
@@el34glo59 IMHO the 90s had far too many flashes in the pan who didn't even deserve that flash. And the vaunted "grunge" sound has not aged well at all to my ears. Much faster and better sounds in Metal, IMHO. But I will give respect to Primus and their work in the 90s. They are both original and good.
Indeed. The main effect Roger used for the solo is a Wah-wah pedal though, possibly with a bit of chorus or phaser. I‘ve seen him live and he definitely used a wah.
yup. Roger was such a wonderful writer, and a hugely successful singer, and yet it's astounding to hear/see him shred electric guitar! he was just a few years behind Hendrix in many ways.
Big time, these guys are so exceptional that I have no problem believing the rumors that they are dropping occulted messages and spells in their art. Lyrics are just too creepy IMO
1975 ish, this was in my 8track. Breakfast in America. Traveling upstate Pa. Had my first ever Wendy's cheese hamburger. Driving my 69 Buick Riviera. OMG LIFE WAS GOOD!!
The last minutes of this song have always been the happiest 2 minutes of music in my life - Total jam session of good vibes - when radio stations would neglect to play it I never understood!!!
yea im pretty familiar with the song and this is def lip synced, at least the instruments are , this must be 1979 or 1980, the earlier midnight special programs from 1972 etc had the bands playing live unlike this unfort
I remember back in 1983 when I was only 11 years old Supertramp was invited to a German TV show and they accepted on the premise that they were allowed to actually play live, which was pretty uncommon. They were probably fed up with all the lip syncing. They played It‘s raining again and had to do Crazy as an encore because the audience went wild and demanded it. Good memories.
Fourty three years ago, I bought the cassette of Breakfast In American and would cruise in my car with their music blasting. I still have that cassette! Love their music.
good golly, was it that long ago? i made my own cassette from the LP, and it was in heavy rotation when my Dad would let borrow his car. and of course when i got my own car. what car were you driving with the 'Tramp cranked out?
My older sister got sucked into a ultra fundamentalist religious group and said I could have her devil worshiping album(Breakfast in America), and wasn't holding back what would become of me if I listened to it. I was still pretty young then and had thoughts Roger Hogdson might have made a deal with the devil since his songs were so damn good. As I got older and wiser (didn't take long), I've come to put this album in my all time top 5 ever. Lyrics and music aren't from the devil. Lyrics are from experience and music is from incredible talent. I eventually learned some of the keys and guitar parts when I was able to buy the equipment. Genius!!
I dedicated this song on Valentine's Day to my then high school "BAD" boyfriend and it was played over the intercom through the entire school. It was classic!!!!
This brings on a flood of memories ...what a strong album...it reminds me of autumn, football games and beautiful beautiful girls of my youth. We really grew up with great music ...I wore this album out..what a great time to be alive
I remember being a young teen and my older brother would play this album front and back at least once a day! Such a great album full of great songs that lasted more than 99 seconds and you just loved to sing along.🙂
I've been to over 500 concerts in my day and when I saw them on this tour in May "79" it still is one if not the BEST show I ever saw. Great music and a great time in my life.
Are they lip-syncing? I thought at this stage artists were still performing live. It wasn’t until the last couple of years that lip-syncing occurred due to budget cuts.
Smart people!! Clever arrangement,.. imaginative diligent hard working no nonsense musical magicians. Got to love that guitar solo that Roger cleverly tends to.
