Google enables video out on Pixel 8! What does this mean? 

This is the kind of crazy thing you'd expect to have happened in 2020

Pixel should turn into a ChromeOS machine like Galaxy has Dex. Just saying, it's a no brainer.

If they don't use this opportunity to bring a full fledged Chrome OS for docked mode i will be very disappointed

How is this not more advanced?? 😮 It boggles the mind. This would massively improve the experience for millions of people, if this was half decent I'd get rid of my laptop in a split second

Great video. It is really sad to see the biggest tech company in 2024 just not offering anything remotely close to Dex which has been out for years and it is actually pretty good. Main reason I won't (and don't want to really) change from Samsung Folds.

Thanks for this video, exactly what I was looking for. Do you happen to own XR glasses? I own the Viture glasses. I'm wondering if streaming videos in mirror mode from the pixel, if there's a way to turn off the phone screen when outputting a movie to the glasses. I also own a Moto Edge+ 2023 and when I play movies using the desktop mode in Moto, it automatically turns off the screen after about 30 seconds.

I love the idea of desktop mode and use a lapdock with my Surface Duo all the time. Though I think the only truly useful desktop mode on a phone would be in Microsoft got on board with the full Windows 11 on phone projects. Too bad there's the app gap though, because Windows 11 with a few adjustments is fine on a phone screen (I messed around with Windows 11 on the Lumia 950xl).

Ooh hell yeah, I was hoping that external touchscreens would work. If the Pixel 9 has this functionality too, I'll definitely be upgrading from my 7 Pro.

Have you tried on the lastest version of oneplus open ? Here in Europe I still stuck on Android 13 and video out is very buggy

They need to get a grip and release proper screen mirroring and casting to smart devices like FireTV or Web enabled TVs .. it's 2024 ffs

Do you think this will come to the pixel tablet ? That is the only thing stopping me from buying one as i would like to use an external display when one is available

The thing I found surprising, is the Screen Cast function on my Google Pixel 8 Pro does not find any of my devices. I am on the same network on all my devices. I seem to have upgraded myself OUT of screen casting! Am I required to purchase a Google Chromecast streaming device in order for the Screen Cast function to find my TV? Or is there secure streaming software that will work both on the Pixel 8, and TVs and gaming devices? I was looking at the onn. Google TV 4K Streaming Box as a possible solution, but am unsure. Thanks so much for the PIxel 8 content!

Been contimplating getting the oneplus 12 as an upgrade to my pixel 6 just for this feature. I am concerned , however, that I'll miss the call screening, voice to text with punctuation, and saying 'send' to send texts too much. Those are the only reasons I haven't changed to a different phone. I like the pixel 6 but the battery life seams to be getter worse by the day. After Android 14 it revamped my phone but in the last month the battery is draining so fast, I can't get half a day without recharging. And I'm not even using it!

Fun fact: every Pixel except the 3a and 3a XL has the hardware for this. Hope that Android 15 reenables this for all of them. For tinkerers there's maruOS. doesn't support a lot of phones sadly fun fact 2: this already was implemented in android 11, it broke in android 13, glad to see it's still being worked on

I know I'm late, but I just checked my Pixel 4a 5g and it has those desktop toggles under developer options. Does that mean Google stopped blocking video out on my model with the Android 14 upgrade? I don't have a usb c monitor to test.

you dont need to reboot after enabling those dev options. on my android 11 (powkiddy x18s) this desktop mode looks absolutely the same. seems they abandoned it cuz it hasnt been worked on for quite long time

When I first installed the update my pixel 8 ran horribly. The phone heated up and the pixel launcher kept crashing when I tried going to recent apps (I still use 3 button navigation). I ran my google app updates and it finally settled down after about 10 min or so and a reboot or two. I was really bummed i would have to uninstall the update (been waiting to use my xreal glasses with this). Luckily its running like a charm now and I can confirm the xreal glasses are working fine with my pixel 8. I haven't tried installing the app yet.

Imagine this in combination with a full blown Windows 11 on Arm VM (using Limbo for Tensor). Who's gonna try?

As an aside, wasn't today supposed to be the update for the US?

I tried going on beta on my pixel fold and I couldn't get it to work. I tried on a TV, on my nreal AR glasses and an external monitor. All with different cables. Could anyone confirm if this works on the pixel fold?

I dont know about Dex but i do hope they go the route Motorola went or even talk with them because ready for and moto connect are very good and i would say go toe to toe with Samsung Dex if not outright do it better and i use both.
