As an electrician who’s worked on boilers for 12 years after 2 minutes I’ve spotted 2 mistakes 🤣 That’s a heat only(conventional) boiler not a combi. Also a thermostat should be where the radiator has a lockshield which will probably be the hall. The hallway would usually be the best place for a thermostat because it has the most air movement and will give the best indication of a mean temperature for the house. It’s building regs 👍🏻

A heat only(conventional) boiler also known as a system boiler.
@benbouchere3691
@benbouchere3691 4 года назад
Stuart Andrews No, a system boiler has a built in pump and pressure vessel. A heat only boiler is exactly that it heats the water. There’s an external pump.

Yeah, looking at the lack of pipework underneath the boiler, straight off it doesn't look like a combi. But hey ho, no big deal.
@0liver0verson9
@0liver0verson9 4 года назад
Is it a compulsory building regulation though that the thermostat has to be in the hall? I've seen loads of them in the lounge not hall Ben.
@benbouchere3691
@benbouchere3691 4 года назад
The oranges are switched lives that tell the boiler to fire up. That then instructs the pump to run, not a flow sensor 👍🏻

@effervescence5664 3 года назад
That pump does have a pressure sensor in it, it's a new gen Grundfos with speed control depending on system back pressure (EU energy eff legislation). It does appear that heating system control wiring is not something he's overly o fey with though.

Jordan, love all your videos. We had nothing like this in the early 90's. It was a simple thermostat in the kitchen and I had to open windows if rooms got too hot. Having lived in Hong Kong for the past 23 years, I am looking forward to coming back to the UK in a few years and marveling at the new technology.

TBF to Jordan, he knows about as much about how a heating system works as a Plumber does about electrics. This is exactly where You Tube gets dangerous because people will follow this video and believe what they are being told. S plan and Y plan wiring is designed with safety in mind. Any part of the system fails and it stops the boiler. If a valve is closed its really important that the pump stops running which is why the valve controls turning the boiler and pump on. If the valve ails to open you don't wanna burn out the pump or run the boiler until it pressure releases or worse. This is where a good knowledge of what you are doing and testing before you start filming is important.
@UrbanPlumbers
@UrbanPlumbers 4 года назад
You can have closed valves and pumps running - a lot of boilers require pump overrun - so the pump runs after valves close and boiler stops. That is why you have auto bypass installed on systems (if installed correctly) - also, a lot of combis and system boilers will have an internal bypass for that reason. Not a problem on Y plan - as there is always flow through either heating or hot water cylinder coil. Pump will not burn out even without a bypass if running against a closed valve.

My new place has UFH/heatpump and I found the manifold wiring system far easier to integrate into the nest than the old gas boiler - have 5 nests in the new place. However, my programmable unit not only allows dual zone heating control (7 day, 3 timeslot scheduler), but also allows control of the Megaflow heating schedule. I not yet seen any example of replacing such a system using a Nest as I'd like to replicate my almost 3-way heating schedule. Any ideas?

I’ve got dual zone system and one of the nest heat link suddenly stopped working, just can’t connect with the thermostat. After nearly 8 hours chat with nest support I’ve been told that the reason for that is because the heat links are close to each other. Any advice will be helpful as I don’t think that they know what they are talking about. The two heat links are working like that for over two years.

Jordan if you are just switching a heating zone do you get one that just does heating or do they only come as heating and hot water and you disable the H/W. Also, I was always told you install a stat in the coldest room ie the hall if you have it in the lounge which gets a lot of sun the colder rooms the heating gets shut off before it got the room up to temperature. I also got told that you have to keep going past the stat if not it turns the heating off what are your thoughts?

It’s just that I’ve added ufh and need switched power for the pump. I haven’t installed a zone valve as I only want one stat. Is this possible without blowing the unit?

@Mark-gf7yw 4 года назад
@@artisanelectrics It allows the thermostat to control the boiler, so for instance with a standard on/off thermostat, the boiler will run full blast till the set room temp is reached and most likely overshoot it, then shuts down, room temp drops, boiler runs full blast again etc etc............... Opentherm allows your smart thermostat to better control the boiler temp, by being able to ramp the boiler up or down when near desired temp or when far away from it. More cost effective on gas, and keeps a more consistent room temp. Probably haven't explained that very well, hope it makes sense 👍
@jamescarver6275
@jamescarver6275 4 года назад
@@Mark-gf7yw explanation sounds good to me. Its basically looks at the differential between setpoint and measured value, and ramps up or down the boiler accordingly.On ours, only very occasionally does the temperature overshoot the setpoint, in which case it closes the valve and shuts down the boiler. Less cycling means a happy boiler (apparently)!
