UPDATED MARCH 2024: The Pixel 8 is currently (at the time of writing this) down to £550 in the UK and $500 in the US - that's a CRAZY price for this phone... 🤯If you want to pick it up and support the channel, you can buy it here (affiliate link): geni.us/PwSxtjJ What are your thoughts on the Pixel 8?! Let me know down below! 👇

I had a Pixel 7 but decided to update to the Pixel 8 because of the discounted price and the generous trade-in deals that Google was offering as well. I find my pixel 8 is getting much better battery life than my pixel 7. For my use case I'm typically getting a couple days per charge. I like the smaller size and the brighter screen, and better macro capability on the ultrawide camera in comparison to the Pixel 7. Seven years of software support is great as well.

Great review Arran. I love the Recorder app and the call screening feature too. It's overall very easy to use and probably the android phone for iOS users looking to switch. Really nice pace and style of video. Thank you.

Thanks, Robin! Yes, I would have mentioned these too, although I haven't really had a reason to use the Recorder app or the call screening features yet - although I'm sure they'll come in useful down the line at some point. I completely agree - it's a very easy-to-use phone and it would definitely be suited to those who are interested in switching from iOS. Thanks so much for the kind comments and feedback - I really appreciate it!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. So many bad things has been said about the non-Pro version by reviewers that usually stay for a couple of days with the phone and don't care to have the proper time to feel the whole experience. I've been a Samsung user for the last 7 years and I'm really surprised with my Pixel 8 after the first 45 days.

No problem, Rafael! I think it's hard to get a sense of the ins and outs of a phone unless you use it for a longer period, which is why I appreciate longer-term reviews. It highlights the actual useful parts of a phone and also any issues that you wouldn't see only using it for a few days! Glad to hear you are enjoying the Pixel 8 too, and thanks for the comment!

Can you suggest the right time to buy the Google Pixel 8 in the US this year? Will the prices drop during the July 4th sales?
@arranpbrown
@arranpbrown 10 дней назад
As I don't live in the US, I'm not super familiar with the sales etc. over there as it's often quite different to the UK. However, if there are usually sales around July 4, then there is a good chance Google will reduce the Pixel around then - I've seen them drop the price of the Pixel so many times since it was first released that there is a good chance they will use any excuse to do it again!

@@arranpbrown thanks. Yeah the 7 is good but I miss the secure face unlock. It was faster and more reliable than the finger print on the 7. Also the 4 had much better speakers. It's weird that Google took a step back on that.
@arranpbrown
@arranpbrown 7 месяцев назад
@phritza very good points! Maybe the hardware for the secure face unlock was quite expensive? Or maybe there weren’t enough users making use of it - who knows, but it is interesting! Yeah, definitely noticed the speakers on the Pixel 8 don’t get that loud too. It’s not a real problem, but just a bit annoying in certain situations.
@phritza

@@arranpbrown yeah I think it was costs, plus everyone wore masks at the time so face unlock wouldn't work. for me, the loudness of the 7 is fine but the clarity is noticeably worse. I found something in the settings called "adaptive sound" so maybe that will help your loudness issue?

I've only had my p8p for about 3 days so there is still time for it to learn. I try not to look at battery life because my ocd starts kicking in with the not so good sot lol That being said, firstly i use mostly data, very very little wifi, probably 99.9% data vs wifi. Secondly my s23 ultra in the same data use, I avg about 10-11h sot. On reading multiple forums on battery life, it seems the general consensus is, 10h avg on Wi-Fi, and 6-7h on data. So I'm curious, for those that have owned their p8p for awhile, and use the same data like me, not much wifi at all, what do your battery sot run on avg? I do realize it's going to differ per person as to thier usage and what they do, but I'm trying to get a base to go from. I'll give the phone a good month before I decide if I want to go back to the s23 ultra or stick with the p8p. A month should be plenty of time to give me an idea what battery is going to be like

It seems this is not such as first choice to make a trip off the battery and internet connections are unstable. Knowing the song is playing isn't but a gimmick you already got from Shazan eons ago. Would you choice Sansung 23 instead? iPhone 15? Thanks for your review.
@arranpbrown
@arranpbrown 7 месяцев назад
I've not had any issue with the internet connection stability on the phone, but the battery could be an issue if you were taking a long trip and using navigation and mobile data, so that's a good point! I get that Now Playing seems like a gimmick, but it's the difference between me actually finding out what a song is and not in a lot of cases because most of the time normally I wouldn't bother using something like Shazam, so it's just surprisingly really convenient and useful. I've actually heard good things about the S23, so I would also consider that. Although I had a bad experience with my S22, the main issue was the shocking battery life, but I liked almost everything else about that phone - it seems they've improved the battery performance on the S23, but I also think you are always going to be limited by having such a physically small battery cell. I would probably go for the iPhone 15, but the price is pretty steep and iPhones don't tend to go down in price much at all. In contrast, when I bought the Pixel 8, I got money back for my old S22 (that Apple didn't offer), and a pair of Pixel Buds Pro for free. Right now, the Pixel 8 can be bought in the UK for £500 while the iPhone is stuck at £800, so it's a fairly difficult comparison! But I think most people would be happy with the iPhone 15. I hope this helps and thanks for the comment!

@arranpbrown
@arranpbrown 7 месяцев назад
I agree - I think that's something Apple has done well, making both screen sizes available for both the base and pro models so you're not stuck with one size depending on which version you get. Maybe Google will do this with future phones! Cheers for the comment! 👌

Great review Arran! I'm currently using an S22 (Exynos). You mentioned you were using the S22 before. I'm wondering if it's worth upgrading to the Pixel 8. My S22 is getting quite laggy now but the battery isn't too bad. The speakers are sublime though. Did you notice an improvement in performance or battery life since the upgrading? Do you you think it was worth it just for the clean android experience?
@arranpbrown
@arranpbrown 4 месяца назад
Thank you - glad you enjoyed it! I honestly really liked my Samsung S22, apart from the battery life which I found to be shocking. The battery on the Pixel 8 for me is definitely far better than the S22, but it's not an exceptional battery by any stretch. I think if you need battery life longer than a day, then you'd be better looking elsewhere to be honest (like the Asus ZenFone 10 or OnePlus 12), but the battery has tended to be good enough for how I use my phone. In terms of performance, I haven't really noticed much difference in that I didn't really have any issues with lacking performance on my S22 and I haven't had any issues with the Pixel 8 either, which is good! I do really like the clean experience of Android on the Pixel and the Pixel-exclusive features you get, and it's nice not to have any sort of Samsung bloatware on the phone, so overall I am really happy with the experience with the Pixel. There are some weird bugs here and there that crop up from time to time, but they are never dealbreakers in my eyes, just very minor annoyances. The Pixel 8 is also currently down to £599 for the 256GB version, which I think makes it a much more compelling option than at its original price. I hope this helps you decide! Thanks for watching and for your comment! 👌

@@arranpbrown thanks that helps a lot. It's certainly tempting given the current discount available and the trade in value. The only thing holding me back is the drop is speaker quality. I use the speaker a lot, especially playing podcasts at night when I don't want to use headphones.
@arranpbrown
@arranpbrown 4 месяца назад
No worries at all - I don't think the speaker quality is poor, but it definitely doesn't get as loud as the S22 did. You can easily solve the issue by using a bluetooth speaker to be fair. You can get some really good ones for £40-£50!

Ahh okay, I've not tried screen casting with the Pixel 8 to be fair - the only kind of comparative issue I had was casting my screen to my Windows laptop for work, but I ended up using Scrcpy, which works well. Not sure about mirroring to TVs though, but after a quick search it does seem like an issue that a lot of Pixel 8 users have had, which is not great. Thanks for the comment!

But oneplus 9 burns out batteries much faster due to the extra heat from faster charging. No free lunch, batteries will last longer slow charging. Around 20 watts is the max past that you start eating into battery long term life. If you toss the phone each year or 2 its not a big deal.

Can you set one alarm for a specific date and time in the future? Then, once you dismiss it, it will delete that one time alarm. I have an iphone and not having this feature drives me insane. I don't want a calendar notification or a reminder because when I have my phone on silent (which I do most of the time) the alarm will not ring loudly, defeating the purpose. I know other android phones have this feature and I just want to double check that pixel 8 does as well before I purchase it! Thanks!
@arranpbrown
@arranpbrown 5 месяцев назад
Yeah you can do this, using the 'pause alarm' feature that you can read about here: support.google.com/pixelphone/thread/195508662/pause-alarm?hl=en. Basically you could set the alarm for whatever time you want and then set the pause alarm until the day before the day you actually want it to go off, and your alarm will not go off until that date, if that makes sense. It's a bit more complicated than it needs to be, but it's possible. It would be great if they could just build in a function that allowed you to select a specific date that you wanted the alarm to go off, but I guess this achieves the same end result. I hope this helps!

Browsing reddit I saw that apparently a lot of people seem to have this issue. No one seems to know exactly why. If you go out of your way to try and really maximize for battery, like using 60hz, switching to 4g(not having it on all the time), turning off wifi scanning, keeping the brightness at reasonable levels, I can usually get 10-11 hours of sot, im typing this now sitting at 37%, the last time I charged was 2 days ago, and I have 7 hours of sot with 45 minutes of Spotify in the background. Also, I'm pretty sure that my battery was not properly calibrated out of the factory, the first time I tried to kill it, it was stuck on 1% for 2 1/2 hours worth of sot. Once I figured that out, the battery improved drastically. As the phone actually knew what zero was.

I don't know what to make of this phone. At 800€ for the 256GB version it is already competing with the Galaxy S23, which in my opinion is simply the more capable phone due to the Snapdragon Chip. Especially if you consider how close you come to Googles Camera prowess by installing the GCam Mod for Galaxy Phones. Plus, the fingerprint reader is supposedly way better on Samsung devices. Google says they upgraded the hardware of the pixels, but in the wrong places I guess.
@arranpbrown

That's a fair point - the S23 looks like an excellent phone to be fair. I don't personally tend to use my phone for a lot of intensive tasks (like video editing or gaming), as I have other dedicated devices to do that, so the Tensor G3 provides all I need in terms of power. I do prefer Google's stock Android experience and I like a lot of the Pixel-exclusive software features, so for me, I'm happy with the Pixel, but I think I'd probably be happy with the S23 too, provided the battery experience is better than the S22! I have used Pixel 3a, 6a and iPhone 13 Pro. So here's my feedback for someone who is confused between Pixels and iPhones. Pixel 3a was a gold rated phone except for the Performance. After moving to 6a i found the phone to be considerably fast, but not as much as any of the iPhones. However this was my first impression. After using it for a few weeks, i noticed more issues. 6a gets warmer(not hot) every time i use it, video cannot be recorded for more than 5 mins at 30 degree celsius weather. On summer days, after clicking some photos itself phone starts to show over heated warning. Portrait mode is not as good as how it was in my 3a. Edge detection fails most time and its not as good as iPhone now. Again, it doesnt blur the image properly, sometimes half of my image is blurred not the subject itself. Astro mode in Camera never turns on. Shutter speed is quite fast that image quality is compromised compared to my 3a. Overall i would say, 3a had a far better camera than 6a. Apart from this, Then finger print doesn't work most of the time on Pixel 6a. In display finger print on the Pixel 8 is also not ultrasonic and hence not as fast as flagships. Overall i would say, quality of Pixels has degraded much after switching to Tensor. I wouldn't recommend it any more. Now coming to iPhone, when compared to Pixel, you get better video quality, a good camera system overall, better micro phone and speakers, better UI/UX, better ecosystem, Offline AI and Albums,Face ID that works in night too, better resale value. Overall iPhone is a better value for money compared to Pixel 8 i can say. You may still go for Pixel if you are getting it at a much cheaper Price compared to iPhone 15.

Thanks for the comment - interesting to hear your take and thoughts! I've not had any real big issues with my Pixel 8 and overheating certainly hasn't been an issue (although I'm in Scotland in the middle of winter, so we'll see how it holds up when it's warmer). At the end of the day, some people can't afford to pay £800 for an iPhone, and you can get the Pixel as low as £500 on sale even only a couple of months after it's release, which for me makes it an obvious choice for a lot of people. However, if you have the financial freedom to choose, then I agree that it is not such a simple decision between Pixel and iPhone and it then comes down to how you use your phone and whether you're already somewhat in the Apple (or Google) ecosystem. Cheers for your input - I appreciate the long, detailed comment!

@arranpbrown
@arranpbrown 5 месяцев назад
Probably a few main points to consider... Do you already own a load of other Apple products? If so, go for the iPhone 14, as it will work really well with them, and as long as you're happy with being stuck with the lightning port on the 14. If you don't have any other Apple products, then you can probably still get the Pixel 8 cheaper, and it's a really good phone. Another consideration is if you use your phone to film a lot of video - iPhone tends to be better for this. Finally, the iPhone 14 will have a more powerful processor than the Pixel 8, so if you do a lot of gaming, then you'd probably be better with that too. Just some quick thoughts, but I hope this helps!

i am starting to wish i had not got the pixel 8. the battery drains fast even when not in use, the mobile signal seems week compared to what i used to get, the camera seems to take forever to focus when camera is opened and i swear there is only 1 speaker in the base even though reviewers always say speakers plural ! if i cover the bottom right hole the sound deadens but cover any other hole and there is no difference. not had any restarts as far as i know though and no white flash on the camera.
@arranpbrown
@arranpbrown 4 месяца назад
Sorry to hear you've not had the best experience! I've not had too many issues with the battery or mobile signal, but I have noticed the weird focus issue when you first open the camera app - I think it might be a software issue because this definitely wasn't an issue when I first got the phone! You're right, there is only one speaker in the base of the phone - the phone uses the speaker at the top of the phone (i.e. the one that you listen to when you put the phone up to your ear for a phone call) as the second speaker for stereo when you are listening to regular media. Hope that clarifies, but thanks for the comment!

Good review. I have had this phone since the last week in December. I love it. I upgraded from a Pixel 4a. This phone is just a little bit bigger but quite a bit heavier than the 4a. But that's OK. It's not a giant phone by any means. I wasn't sure how I would like the nearly 1/2 inch thick camera visor. Without a case, I don't think I would like it. But with the Google case it really isn't that obvious that there is a visor. Also I don't have the stupid camera wobble caused by the camera bump, like an iPhone would have if placed on a flat surface. I also really like the wireless battery share feature. I have already used it when my wife forgot to bring her iPhone charger on a recent trip. One thing I would disagree with is the conclusion. I am easily getting a full day+ of use from this phone. My 3 year old Pixel 4a would struggle to make it a full day and usually wouldn't unless I was in power save mode. After about a week of use the adaptive battery software is able to get me about a day and a half of use. Admittedly I don't make heavy use of the phone. The most strenuous thing I do is watch a few RU-vid videos before going to sleep. Otherwise, I'm just making calls, using a web browser or doing DuoLingo. My phone is almost always connected to my PC via Bluetooth. I'm sure if one is heavy gaming on the phone, it won't last a day. But I think most phones would have the same problem.

Thanks for the super detailed comment, Louis! Really interesting to hear your experience! I completely agree with all your points! I've also found that the battery has improved quite a bit as I've been using it longer, but it does depend on how you use the phone. I found that Spotify was being a huge drain on the phone battery, inexplicably having about 15 hours a day of background activity for no reason. It was one of the apps that was installed on the phone when I transferred my data from my Samsung S22 and seemingly uninstalling it and reinstalling has helped a lot with the background activity issue for some reason, which has had quite a big impact on the battery (in a good way!). Glad you're also enjoying your Pixel 8! Thanks for watching 😁

What do people expect from a phone for battery life? For me, if it can last a day, then I'm satisfied. But in the end, it depends on each person's lifestyle.
@arranpbrown
@arranpbrown 2 месяца назад
I guess it really depends on the person, like you said! I personally get pretty battery anxious, so if I'm going out for a long day out and I'm not at 100% battery, I'm going to be worried about the phone lasting the full day, especially if I'm using it on data with Bluetooth audio connected and streaming music - that kills the battery quite quickly in my experience! I think I'd love to have a phone that could just about last 2 days, so I basically didn't have to worry about it lasting one day at all, if that makes sense. I think I'm asking a bit much of a phone this size though, but then again, the Asus ZenFone 10 seems to have managed it, all while being quite a bit smaller than something like the Pixel 8. Battery life is pretty important to me personally - it's not terrible on the Pixel 8, but I think it could be better!

I think I've got to disagree with you on this one - I would say that 7 hours of battery life on a phone is still exceptional, especially for smaller phones like the Pixel 8 and Samsung S23. @arranpbrown
@arranpbrown 6 месяцев назад
The battery is not excellent, but I wouldn't say it was poor - I think it's good enough for most people and will last a day for most use cases! I've personally also had no issues at all with reception on my Pixel 8, but I have heard some other people have. I hope this helps!

@@arranpbrown thanks. i currently have the samsung s20 fe, and had the samsung note 8 before that. i'm debating, between the s23 fe or the pixel 8. was curious to try something new, but, don't want any sacrifices. i'm in BC, canada, and our cell coverage is pretty terrible, overall. plus, i'm hiking in the remote woods often, and with a phone with great reception, it's extremely spotty where i can reception. i'd hate to get this phone and then find out i have no reception in the areas that i'm used to picking some up. the other thing i use my phone for, quite a bit, is recording video while i'm hiking. would that also be a battery-killer on this phone? i've never, ever used up my s20 battery in a day, regardless of what i do with my phone. being used to that kind of life, something drastically less would be unacceptable.
@arranpbrown
@arranpbrown 6 месяцев назад
@zzz7zzz9 ahh interesting - I think honestly if you're doing a lot of hiking etc and taking a lot of video, the Pixel 8s battery probably won't be good enough for you to be honest. It's much worse on 5G/4G than just on WiFi, so you would probably struggle to get the day you need out of it and I wouldn't want to completely rely on it when you're out in the middle of nowhere! Probably best to look at a different phone that has better battery performance. Have you thought about the Asus ZenFone 10? I've heard that's got exceptional battery life and in a nice small form factor - could be a good alternative? Cheers!

Everything U said is absolutely true .. My experience is ..the auto flash sucks . The fingerprint reader sucks .but I kinda adapted to that.. they claim it would be slow to charge when adaptive battery is on.. it's a learning curve with the features if U came from another brand of phone or size of phone.. the reason the picture editing software is in the cloud is because that chip can't handle it.. yes I got the restart problem at least once .. the. Battery drain I think it's because certain apps continue to run in the background. I think when the features work, they work really well and most of the issues are software related, so I'm going to keep my fingers crossed that Google pay attention to videos like this and fix the issues! Overall, my experience has been good though, so I can't complain too much! I don't have any issues at all with the fingerprint reader - it's been really fast and accurate for me to be honest. Also Adaptive Battery doesn't actually charge the phone super slow, but it just charges it up to 80% and then tops up the remaining 20% just before you wake up (provided you've set an alarm on the phone seemingly) - this is to avoid it sitting at 100% for an extended period of time, because that can be detrimental to the battery life long term - hope that makes sense! Thanks for the comment though!

It’s insane the PR Google Pixel gets for a bang average unreliable product. How can mobile tech reviewers justify such a mess of a brand and smartphone? The rest of the world can’t use this thing and enjoy the so-called smart features because Google can’t find a way to bring a user experience that is no different from an American user. And we say Google has ambitions? Nah all top Chinese smartphones like OnePlus, Oppo, Xiaomi, and Huawei, brands are the ambitious ones though they face challenges with US restrictions on their advancement they’ve shown to be churning out better products than they are given credit for.

I'm not going to pretend like some of your battery points aren't valid because you're absolutely right about use-case. But, let's be honest, it's pretty trash overall - pixel battery life has been trash since tensor was a thing and it has hardly changed since. My pixel 7 had worse battery life than my 2 year old pixel 5 even after the 2-3 week break in for adaptive battery. Pixel 8 is even worse per GSM arena and many others publications. This shouldn't be excused so much for a company so big. Add in the fact that they didn't fix the fp reader and it just shows that the people who make the phone obviously don't even bother using it themselves. The only pixels that had okay battery life are the 2xl, the 3axl, and the 5. That's a pretty horrific ratio and let's not talk about the pixel 4 lmfao I've had the p1xl/p2xl/p3axl/p4xl/p5/p7 and boy am I glad I only paid about 50% or less for them. There's not a chance anyone in their right mind should be buying these things for full retail with the QC and customer support that google offers. I obviously want them to succeed given I've owned so many, but it's so obvious they don't give a shit.
@arranpbrown

Interesting to hear your perspective, having owned so many Pixel phones - thanks for sharing! I think my perspective is skewed slightly because I previously had the Samsung S22 and that had the absolute worst battery I've ever used, so the Pixel seems fine to me! However, I absolutely wouldn't say it's got a 'good' battery life, it's definitely just 'okay', so I agree with a lot of the things you said! I can't comment on the QC issues etc because mine seems to be very well built and working well hardware wise, but then maybe I just got lucky based on what you're saying! Thanks for the comment!

I have the 7 currently and was going to trade up for the 8 but changed my mind had some misgivings about how much is really different or improved vs the 7. Really just seems like smaller form factor (which I like) and 120hz vs 90hz, brighter screen, and the AI photo gimmicks that can't even be processed on-device and depend on the cloud = more power drain. Would like to maybe go for s23 since also compact size but would be missing out on those Google features like call screen and recorder that seem unique to Pixel
