***** Nope! When you use Google Voice and Hangouts you send real SMS messages, so it's just like texting. No one else needs to have Hangouts installed.

I have used google voice for many years. Now that I use hangouts as my messaging app, the only issue I have is the severe degradation of photo quality when sending mms. Besides that issue, everything else about hangouts is mostly good.

Is it possible to use Google Hangouts on my tablet to pick up messages from my home answering machine while I'm away? To be honest...I'm old and not tech savy so even though you give great advice, it is overwhelming for me. I don't want to wear my brain out installing this only to find out it doesn't work for what I need.

I prefer the Hangouts to stock messaging app as far as looks are concerned. Also having a user icon, timestamp and few additional options are welcome additions. Text readability could improve... too bad there's no prefs to change it.

You can use Google Voice even if you have No cell phone or home phone. On android get Talkatone or on PC the way I do it, use Bluestacks to run Talkatone. They will give you a number when you sign up.(free) You can use that number for your Google Voice setup and to get your Google Voice number. Lastly, I just use the Chrome Google Hangouts desktop extension to open a small desktop window to make and receive phone calls. Google Voice is actually using the Talkatone number to make the calls like it would use your home or cell number. Of course i just could use Talkatone directly but i'd have to keep Bluestacks open and thats a ram hog pain when i already use a pc browser. You Have to use the system either through Talkatone or Google Voice once a month or the system deletes your number for non use. For a free wifi phone it's pretty sweet. I use it at home on a desktop pc and on the go at free wifi hot spots (McDonalds, BurgerKing, Walmart) with a 4 gig windows tablet. My wifi phone can play Skyrim! LOL Note, I discovered this because I wanted a Google Voice number but didn't want to associate it with my real home phone.

I have Google voice and hangouts on my 4 year old Samsung Note 2. Hangouts is primary text app I use. I have a Google voice widget to see my text messages on my home screen. I have this setup because my phone will receive text messages late when using hangouts or the stock sms messaging app. Google voice will get the text instantly and back it up in the cloud. Hangouts doesn't do that yet.

Thanks for answering the question about notifications turning on all the settings in Hangouts. I did that but now I get notification that i have a incoming pop up that only lasts for 3 rings. If I am a little slow I wont know its a google voice call. I also received a pop up that said that I have text messaging off. but I do not see anything in settings to off and on the text settings.

once your done setting up can you remove the forwarding number all together and that number won't ring if someone calls you on your voice number

Hi Stetson, I'm on android and didn't see where I could only use WiFi. I did select the incoming calls. So just to verify if I use the hangouts app to send and receive calls it will not use my tracfone minutes or data. Also, If my friends call me on my forwarding number I can pick it up through my GV and not use up minutes or data.

Turn notifications on and make sure "incoming call ring" is toggled on from the Hangouts setting page.

I think this is a good service. However when I am using a higher latency network like US Cellular which I often test over a 100 ms ping, it does seem to have a breakup occasionally. When I use a lower latency like Sprint with a 50 or 60 ms ping usually, it works much better.

I have the latest version of hangouts on my android phone. The UI and options are quite different from yours. Your iOS phone seems to have better/more options than mine.

Hi Stetson, so am I correct in thinking that if I sign up for a google voice number and use hangouts I can in essence have 2 numbers on my phone? And can make free calls when I'm home over wifi using hangouts and then when I'm out and about I can just use my number tied to my sim on my carrier? Thanks for the great video!

Yes, you are correct. You will have two numbers on your phone. The idea is that you only use your Google Voice number though. Instead of using the number on your SIM card when you're out and about, you can use your cellular data to make and receive calls with Google Voice and Hangouts. This way you will only need to give out your Google Voice number for your contact info.

Why is it Google Voice doesn't acknowledge the fact that I have already chosen a number? I've chosen a number at least 3 times now, and it still doesn't see it. It keeps asking me to choose a number. It also doesn't show the Google numbers I selected anywhere.

Hey Stetson I have the iPhone 6 Plus and I can not make or receive calls in hangouts iv tried everything it says and nothing works I can send SMS and mms just no calls it says calling but you never hear any ringing and nobody ever picks up and when someone calls my google voice number all I get from hangouts in the notification and text message with the voice mail they left me, please help so frustrating!

Did you port your number or did you sign up for a new number? Sometimes it takes a few days for everything to start working properly if you ported your phone number. Otherwise check to make sure these settings are correct: On a computer go to www.google.com/voice/. Go to settings in the top right. Under the "Phones" tab you'll see a section titled "Forward calls to." Make sure NOTHING is selected. Under the "Calls" tab at the top make sure call screening is turned OFF and Do Not Disturb is turned OFF. On the Hangouts app on your iPhone go to settings and make sure "Allow Calls" is turned ON for WiFi and Cellular. Also make sure "Incoming Call Ring" is turned ON. Then under the "Phone Number" section make sure you have "Incoming phone calls" turned ON. And that should be it! Everything should be set up so your phone can make and receive phone calls through Hangouts. Again, if you ported a phone number to Hangouts it may take a few days before everything fully starts working. I know this can be frustrating and a major inconvenience, but that's just the way it is. Hopefully this helps and you can make and receive calls!

Thanks for the great video! I currently have Google Voice app installed for iOS and want to move to Hangouts for VOIP. I'm having an issue when I turn on do not disturb in Google Voice app calls go straight to voicemail instead of Google Hangouts even though I have Incoming call ring switched on. Any ideas?

Yes, you can do this. Porting your number will cost $20 and will cancel your current cell service.

Hi Stetson, I downloaded Google voice and hangouts on my android device, but I dont see the option to either sync my contacts or set the incoming call option , like you demonstrated in your video. can you please tell me how to find these options? Great quality video, by the way. thanks.

+1238sri So I believe you can change your incoming call settings online at www.google.com/voice/. If you go to "settings" and then "phones," there is an option titled "Forward calls to." If nothing is selected here then I believe incoming calls will just ring in the Hangouts application. Also be sure to have the Hangouts Dialer application installed on your phone. On the phone make sure to go to "settings," then "account settings," and make sure "messages" and "incoming phone calls" are toggled on. In terms of syncing your contacts, I believe that option is only on iOS devices. You may want to try tapping on your gmail account and tapping "manage accounts," then tapping on your Google account, " and then making sure "Sync Contacts" is turned on. That's my best guess. I hope this helps!

On an iPhone, yes, you use both together. Google Voice essentially gives you the phone number, and Google Hangouts is the application you use to talk and text. I recommend using them together.

I'm a little confused in new to project fi I think my project fi support my Google Voice number can I install Hangouts and send text and receive text messages from anywhere in the world on a Chromebook

So if you sign up with a new number on Project Fi, it will replace your Google Voice number. Regardless, once you have Fi/Google Voice, you'll be able to text anywhere in the world as long as you have some sort of internet connection. The internet connection can be through cellular data or wifi.

I have freedompop sim and got tired of using the freedompop app. I installed the google hangouts app but I am not able to send text messages via the app for some reason. Nor am I able to receive text nor calls. I can make calls but not receive. Why?

Do you have a Google Voice number? You may need to change your notification settings too.

Stetson, at 2:49 you said to enable incoming phone calls to enable the hangouts application to ring instead of forwarding the call to another number, and can continue to use the hangouts application while talking on the phone and it will not count toward my cellular minutes allotment, instead it will come over wifi or cellular data connection. I have the T-Mobil $30 Prepaid and it was elusive as you said it would be to set up, but paying close attention to your vids I was able to get it. . My question to you is: I was making phone calls to my newly issued google voice phone number from a landline, a) after disabling 'call forwarding' to my T-Mobil Cell number on google voice settings from my PC, b) subsequently enabling incoming phone calls in the settings from the hangouts settings app on my cell phone, and turning off wifi on my cell phone to receive calls over the cellular data network from my T-Mobile account, the calls did go through and expecting my minutes allotment to be untouched, but after accepting the calls, I checked my T=Mobil account and discovered it did eat up minutes from my minutes allotment. Am I missing something??

The functionality of the two applications appears to be essentially the same, but I think the Hangouts application is more feature rich and receives updates on a more frequent basis.

Yes, group chatting works fine on Google Hangouts. Other people do not need to have the app installed.

Have you tried turning your volume up? Using headphones instead of the built in speaker and mic? Is it only one person, or is it with all people? Try searching online for solutions!

Hey Stetson, quick question. Ever since I upgraded my iPhone from 8.0 to 8.4.1, and now 9.1, I don't get a missed call notification. Do you? I've made a few reddit threads and checked Google review forums and there's barely any mention of this problem. What I mean is, when you open Hangouts on your phone and go to "Dialer" at the bottom, it only shows sent and received phone calls. If you happen to miss one, there's no mention of it.

I also do not receive a missed call notification. However, if the caller chooses to leave a message then I will get a voicemail notification. I will also get an incoming call notification. Between incoming call notifications and voicemail notifications, I personally don't see a need for missed call notifications. If the call is important I feel it is up to the caller to leave a message. So while I didn't have Hangouts long enough ago to ever get a missed call notification, I certainly don't get them now, which sounds like the situation you're describing. I personally don't think this is too important, but if you liked getting the notifications then I'm sorry they changed it!

+Stetson Doggett Well, I mean it's a missed call notification. It's very important. That's why there's a reason it exits on every cell phone to home phone call ID's. This used to work prior to 8.4.1. Since then, it just stopped. To anyone else reading: the quick workaround this is to "enable emails for missed calls" in your www.voice.google.com settings.

+SamKQboro Yeah man, this shit drove me nuts. Sam, a quick easy way around it is to turn on "missed calls email notifications". At least I know when I have a missed call this way until they fix it. (Highly doubtful though since I've read posts from August 2014!)

I don't think there is a limit. Just sign in with your Google Account and you should be good to go.

Which number do people receive from you when using hangouts? The google number or the original?

If you call other people using the Hangouts application, they will see your Google Voice number. If you call someone using your default phone application, they will see the phone number tied to the SIM card in your phone.

You can port your mobile number to Google Voice for $20, but this will cancel your mobile plan. You will need to sign up for another mobile plan to use Google Voice on the go (when you're without wifi).

If have an Android phone you may be able to just start using Hangouts. Otherwise I'd suggest getting a Google Voice number first. It's up to you. Technically Hangouts works without Google Voice, but I don't think it is able to send SMS messages without a Google Voice number.

Just for clarification. Let's say I set up data only with US mobile, and have been given a US number via sim card. In this video, you said that once I've ported my number into Google voice, it'll terminate that plan. Will my original number from US mobile be invalid and unavailable?

+Stefan Alexander Basically if you sign up for US Mobile and then port to GV, the phone number will be active on GV. It will become your GV number. Doing this requires you to sign up for US Mobile twice. Instead I suggest signing up for US Mobile once, and then signing up for a free GV number _instead_ of porting your US Mobile number to GV.

Yes, Google Voice is apart of Project Fi. Your Project Fi essentially puts your Google Voice cell number onto a SIM card. All features apart of Google Voice will continue to work, including message transcriptions and the ability to sync messages across all your devices.

+Team Miller There is an option in Hangouts to select where it rings. Make sure you have "Ring Hangouts," enabled, and the application will ring instead of forwarding the call to another phone.
