Episode 20
The Goonies 2 is a very impressive game for a 1987 release, but it's also very mysterious. What happened to the Goonies 1? And what's up with this crazy plot about a kidnapped mermaid?
Despite the weirdness, The Goonies 2 is a MASSIVE Metroidvania game, and it's one of the oldest in the genre. This game actually predates Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest, and even features a map screen!
The game also features a hybrid gameplay style. Most of the game is a 2D platformer, but when you enter a door, it becomes a point and click adventure! These segments can be very confusing if you don't know what to do.
In this guide we'll do a deep dive on this cult classic from Konami. We'll learn:
* The location of EVERY item! Including all 4 Key Holders, Bomb Boxes and Fire Boxes!
* How to find SECRET doors featuring health refills, hidden items, or even EXTRA LIVES!
* How to navigate the MASSIVE game world!
* Where to find ALL SIX Goonies, and Annie the Mermaid!
* A SECRET TRICK that allows you to use the Glasses when you don't have them!
* How to get the best WEAPONS early.... AND MORE!
Thanks for watching!

Man, the 8-bit remix of “Goonies R Good Enough” is still one of my favorite pieces of game music. It’s absolutely brilliant. (And this game absolutely kicked my butt as a kid. I do remember beating it, but WOW was it tricky.)
@Auditorius7
@Auditorius7 3 года назад
Played this game a lot when I was a kid, and beat it with the help of the official Nintendo Players' Guide. I dusted this off a few years ago, and I fortunately remembered every step of the game without the guide which had long since ended up in a landfill somewhere in Iowa. I first want to say that I really enjoyed the video. However, your Goony identification in the video, is completely off except for Brand. I know this because one thing I learned from endless hours playing this game, is that if you use the Transceiver, you will receive messages from the Goonies that give a clue as to where they are in the Fratellis' lair. Mouth (identified in the video as Chunk) is actually the first one you rescue as I have never been able to receive a message from him on the transceiver. This is possibly due to the fact that you don't obtain the transceiver until after you rescue him (assuming you do things in relative order) Andie (identified in the video as Steff) is in the 2nd Ice area (i.e. the one without the boomerang and glasses), as indicated by her message saying "This is Andie. I'm freezing to death"; as well as when you rescue her, she says "Thank you, Mikey. You're braver than Brand" (Brand and Andie were dating in the movie, so Steff saying either of those things doesn't make any sense given where you find her in the game, and her not dating Brand). Brand (correctly mentioned in the video) is in the Green caverns. I forget exactly what his message is, but I recall it making a vague mention of the raincoat that you acquire in that area. Data (identified as Mouth in the video) is the male Goony you save in the underwater area, as indicated by his message "This is Data. Fishman stole my secret weapons" (a reference to the Jump Shoes you get from Fish Man). Steff (identified as Andie in the video) is the female Goony you find in the underwater area, as indicated by her message "This is Steff. A shark is attacking me." Finally, Chunk (identified as Data in the video) is in the Fire Cavern as indicated by his message "This is Chunk. It's close to eruption" or something to that effect (I sadly don't remember the exact line on Chunk's either). I'm not pointing this out to be a jerk or a know-it-all. Just for the sake of accuracy. Again, I very much enjoyed this video, because Goonies 2 is one of my all-time favorite games.

Brand mentions something about seeing something hidden in the wall, a clue that you need to use the glasses to find the door leading to him.

This is the game that taught me not to read instruction manuals. The instruction manual said the B button did nothing when inside of the rooms, but it actually cycles through the list of tools you can use. I was stuck for like 1-2 years because I could find the glasses, but couldn't figure out how to use them in rooms.
@UCanBeatVideoGames

I can totally see that - I'd probably assume the glasses just worked automatically if I couldn't find them in the menu.

Oh thank christ, it wasn't just me! I would religiously read the instruction manual for games. I would go to Toys R' Us and read the Nintendo Player's Guide, and try to remember what it said when I got home. I had the glasses, but damned if I could figure out how to use them!
@duskreqm
@duskreqm 3 года назад
@@gpweaver I had the Nintendo Player's Guide, and that led me to figure it out. Saw a screenshot of the second page of the tools menu (glasses, transceiver, diving suit) and wondered how they did that. Selected Tool, hit every button simultaneously in the hopes something would happen, and that got me to the second page. Some trial and error later, figured out to hit B.

The 'normal' way to go after you get the spring shoes is that you're supposed to backtrack all the way to the purple caverns and use the spring shoes to make the large jump. But since you get the ladder and spring shoes roughly at the same time, it becomes a bit open-ended on what you're supposed to do next. When you were in the purple caverns you never did show the unreachable door that you can only access with the spring shoes, which is the intended way to reach the fire caverns. This is why at 34:58 it seems confusing. You're supposed to "warp" coming from the purple caverns.

Challenge accepted and met! In 1982, a Taito arcade came called The Electric Yo-yo released. Not only does it weaponize this item, but you PLAY as the yo-yo itself! There's also a C64 game released in 1985 called Frak!, where you use a yo-yo as a weapon. Also, Goemon in Legend of the Mystical Ninja uses a yo-yo, and his first game came out in Japanese arcades in 86 (first console game in the same year), so...

Someone probably already said this about the whole Yo-Yo thing, but Rygar came out a few months earlier and, even though it is a shield on a chain, it's pretty much a giant yo yo. BUT there also was a game called "Electric YoYo" in 1982... but it's a puzzle game involving a yo yo. So Goonies II most likely is the first game to feature a guy fighting with a yo yo. Which is cool.

I beat this game 1.5 times previously... ...I went to Annie without all 6 Goonies and uh... yeah, the game will not let you through. ...I also didn't have most of the items; just the ones needed minimally to get there and it was not easy. Either way, this one is a secret gem for me to play. EDIT: No, I did NOT ever use a guide for this game. Yes, I didn't know about the candle. I just got into the habit of rooms where I'd test everything, even when I couldn't see anything.

That bit was removed in the final film, and we only see the water gush over the Fratellis.

My understanding was that there was a Goonies 2 movie in production at the time, and Konami, having the rights, started making the game for the sequel, hoping to release it at the same time as the movie- according to what I read, some of the elements of the game were based on early drafts of the script. However, the movie ended up in development hell and went nowhere, and Konami, about to lose the license due to time limits, published the game anyways.

Classic answer too hard for USA Super Mario Bros 2 Japanese
@UCanBeatVideoGames
@UCanBeatVideoGames 3 года назад
It always surprises me when the game is actually harder in the USA. They're aren't too many examples, but Battletoads, Castlevania 3, and Ninja Gaiden 3 were all much easier in Japan.

It actually happened a lot once games were being rented. Manufacturers wanted people to buy them not just rent so they made them harder here so you had to buy them. At least that's what I've come to understand.

Pretty sure it was a deal to help promote the PC-10 system, with the first one. I remember playing it a lot back then. I'm pretty sure that the 2nd one was already developed and released in Japan by that time, and that's why they chose to release that one and skip over the original. Happened a lot back then, as US releases were frequently years behind the Japanese releases until you got to the 16-bit era.

Another handy tip for this game in the icy areas if you duck you stop yourself immediately and lock your position, handy for spots you might get surprised on.

Wow, that's impressive! I remember the day the Children's Palace in my area went out of business. Games were like 40% off, and I had to get surgery that was going to have me out of school for a few days, so my mom said I could get one. I had really wanted Dragon Warrior 3, but it was extra expensive (like $60) so normally there was no way I was getting it, but at 40% off, it was approved!

I loved children's palace so much.still to this day it was my favorite place on earth.I didnt know children's palace was a nation wide toy store.I thought it was just a local toy store here in Memphis. The old building is still here but its a tire shop now but u can still see the original design of the castle

1987 was a really weird experimental year for NES. Goonies 2 and Dr Chaos were two games that year which tried the very odd hybrid approach of side scroller meets first person adventure game. It was an interesting idea, but dear god the interface and execution of the first person portion was beyond tedious. And I've always thought there was some kind of connection between Goonies 2 and the first NES Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games. A ton of the environments looked the same (9:22). The menu and map looked similar. The boomerangs. Why a mermaid? Probably the same guy who decided NES Darth Vader had to be a scorpion. That Star Wars game was also released 1987! What a strange year. I guess it was an adolescent period for the NES as it tried to move beyond the early to mid 80s arcade ports that it launched on.

That Star Wars game is super weird! I agree, there does seem to be some overlap in the graphic style between this game and TMNT. I need to play Dr. Chaos again. Its been a while.
