Episode 134
Ys Books 1 & 2 for the TuboGrafx CD is the ultimate way to experience the first two chapters of the Ys Series! Featuring enhanced versions of both games that still stay true to the original releases, this collection gives you the classic look of 2D Sprites with all of the bells and whistles you'd expect from a more modern release.
Ys started out on the PC-88 in Japan, but it wasn't long before it was ported to many different platforms. The series finally made it to North America, but it took a while and there were many bumps in the road along the way.
So how did the Ys series finally break out of Japan so it could be enjoyed everywhere? In today's video we'll find out, then we'll dive deep into the gameplay where we'll learn:
* Where to find EVERY hidden ITEM!
* Strategies for getting high-quality equipment early!
* SECRET passwords that unlock special options!
* The best way to LEVEL UP FAST, with MINIMAL GRINDING!
* Detailed MAPS for every area!
* How to easily navigate the confusing DARM TOWER!
* The best way to defeat EVERY BOSS, even DARK FACT himself... AND MORE!
Thanks for watching!

I wonder how many times Adol has woken up on the sand and thought, "Damn it, not again". I could see someone making a joke of a leery Adol standing on the gangplank gently putting just his toe aboard the deck, only to have the ship immediately drop beneath the waves, people screaming as it drags them down with it. I thought the same thing. I hadn't played the original in years and had last played only the remake and in that version, his ship sank and he was found on a beach (surprise, surprise). Despite my loving criticism, I love the franchise.
@psycholuigiman

@@roberthunter479 This reminds me of a great joke in Ys 9. You complete the optional objectives and make Adol the best sword in the game. Then, you're prompted with a choice as Adol gazes upon this ultimate weapon. One of your options is to have Adol think to himself something to the effect of "I'm probably gonna lose this one too". To which the other charcters respond by asking Adol why he has this far-off look in his eye. I never laughed so hard at a self-aware joke in my entire life.

Ys 1-4 (4 is a fan translation) are amazing. The music alone makes them the definitive versions of all of them. There's a sound setting you need to change in your emulator (if you're going that way) though, or you can't hear the voice acting. There's a volume you need to either lower or crank up.

My favorite piece of Ys knowledge is that Dark Fact is just like, a guy. He has family with the last name Fact and they mostly have normal names like Hugo. His first name is actually "dark".
@-Keith-
@-Keith- Месяц назад
But he is the direct descendant of priest Cain Fact from Ys Origin (and by extension either Hugo or Toal, both of whom accepted demonic power from Dalles). So he's already from a bloodline of exceptionally powerful magic users.
@Ghalion666
@Ghalion666 Месяц назад
I would argue they mostly have silly names. Cain decided to rename himself 'darm', which is silly, then there's "toal', another strange name, and of course 'dark'... Hugo is a relatively normal name but He's a confused child where he's an insufferable jerk who SHOULD be a villain but somehow isn't...except he kinda is in the canon route. So yeah, it started normal with Cain, but then one day he decided 'I hereby declare to rename myself something weird, and all my descendants will forever be cursed to have weird names too! And he missed hugo somehow. Probably cuz Hugo was a magical prodigy and used the famous fact shield magic to avoid the curse.

I've only ever played Wanders from Ys 3 on the SNES, but I immediately recognized the track that began playing @ 2:38. That track played every time the player entered an area from the map, and would continue playing until you entered the area proper. Also interesting to see the UI remain the same throughout the older titles, despite being on separate consoles. I played through the Sega Master System version of Ys for the first time just last year. Overall, I really enjoyed it. The pacing is very good, and it does a lot of story telling with a relatively small number of non-dungeon areas in a way that makes them feel large and full. Vagullon was very frustrating -- I don't know if this was just the Master System port or if it affected others as well, but his hitbox seemed to be a pretty small area only around his feet, and he was only vulnerable for a few frames while fully in non-bat form. It does seem like there are some differences between the ports -- it feels like the bosses on the Master System took more hits than here. By the end of the Dark Dekt/Fact battle, I had about half of the platform left; I had to plan where on the platform I was going to hit him so as to not leave myself trapped. It was a brutal battle -- difficult without feeling unfair (unlike Vagullon, who did feel unfair).
@nchastan
@nchastan Месяц назад
The way XP worked on Master System, you had to max out your level for Vagullon to begin with. That would be the same as a low level run in the TurboGraphix version and thus yes, that has to be unfair

Oh man. That 70's porno music from Darm tower really brings back memories. Also, I recommend everyone, who hasn't seen it before, go and RU-vid the cinematic scene between Ys 1 and Ys 2 and crank it up! It's so badass.

Yay finally moreTB16!!! Love it when the turbo gets some love. I was the only kid that had one back then (still have it to this day). Friends and people would come over to play something on nes or snes and would ask what’s that thing next to the Super Nintendo. It was so horribly marketed in the US a lot of people didn’t even know it existed. I didn’t either to be fair I bought it at a flea market in 1991 for $20 with a bunch of games. They’d always want to try it out and loved it. Such a shame NEC put zero effort into actually marketing the thing it was an awesome and criminally under appreciated console in the 8/16 bit days.

I played Ys Book 1 on DOS back near release. When they started doing the modern PC re-releases, I finally got to play the entire game. Ys 3 was also fun, but the jump from 1 to 3 was a huge change in playstyle. I still prefer the first 3 over he modern releases.

I had the Turbograx CD player and this was my favorite game. You can buy Ys book 1 and 2. on most cell phones.

Oooooh! Ys! Actually took the trouble to play through the entire series lately, it has been an absolute blast! I actually beat Ys IX a day or two ago, concluding what is an EXCELLENT series, favorite is probably Ys VIII but 7, 9, Origins and Celceta are all excellent titles and the other ones are charming and pretty short to pick up and play. :) Too bad Ys 5 is lost to time.

This used to be my favorite game. I loved it. Somehow my Turbo Graphics CD got away from me. Watching this really makes me jones for my old system. I can't wait for you to cover book 2. Cool , now Adol gets magic. This is one of my favorite channels.

I've never heard of this game before. It looks pretty cool. The combat system is a little bit odd, but I like the graphics and soundtracks. The soundtrack, when you get an important item, reminds me of "Metroid". Looking forward book 2.

Ah, yes! Another TurboGrafx game. I always enjoy it when you cover games from systems outside of the NES, SNES, and Genesis. (Of course, I enjoy those videos too.) Also, probably dating myself, but I think of Lyle from Wings first when I think of Thomas Hayden Church.

You forgot to list the Gameboy, he played Gameboy games as well. Final Fantasy Legends, Super Mario Land, and Metroid II as far as I know.

@@DawnLynnCat That would fall in the outside NES, SNES, and Genesis category since. After posting this, I did consider adding Game Boy, but the number of games covered is still small, so I decided against it.

Great game. I love that they based the game on a lesser known legendary city than Atlantis. The music is among the best imo.

The only Ys game I ever played was the 7th game. It was basically the PlayStation 4's verison of Legend of Zelda.

Try 8, it's an amazing improvement over 7. Someone here says they like 7 the most but I legit think they just did a typo or got their count wrong. I've never seen anyone who has played 8 who doesn't absolutely adore it over the others, not that the others are bad, 8 is just miraculously good.

One of the best games ever made, played the hell out of it on Master System then bought a Turbo Duo which included this, Gate of Thunder, Bonk, and Bomberman for free. So baffling how that console failed with 5 of the best games ever included for free in the early 90's.

I've always liked the Ys series and good ol' Adol, who seems to have to save the world every few months. Though funnily enough my favorite is one of the few if not the only one Adol isn't in "Ys Origins" which as it says is a prequel to entire series.

Adol has a terrible habit of waking up on beaches after trashing his boat at sea. In Origin you can unlock him in the boss rush mode.

Origin is what got me into the series actually. I saw it in a shop in Taiwan while itching for a new Switch game, and despite thinking Ys sucked, it looked Zelda-ish so I figured it'd be okay at least and it wasn't expensive so why not. Holy crap though, that game was awesome. I thought I didn't like it because my only previous experience with the series was Ys III on SNES which I rented and remembered just absolutely hating. I think I must have cheated and rushed through the game with god mode on or something because I remember getting through it in no time, and have vivid memories of Potato poop meteors from the final boss. After playing Origin I played Ys 1 & 2 for Turbo CD, which led me to the dreaded Ys 3. The music was so good on 1 & 2 for Turbo that I had to stick with it for part 3. I loved part 3 this time around and kept wondering if I really did play it all those years ago, because it seemed different. I remembered just kind of aimlessly going to the right and having nothing to do until I got to the boss. Not so this time, but... potato poop meteors at the end.. .so I guess I really did get through it before. Don't miss the Turbo's version of part 4, which is fan translated. I tried to play V after that but got bored real fast. I think I just went to Ys VIII after that, which I loved, but I thought the music was so weak compared to those Turbo CD games. Haven't played any others, though Ys 9 is in my stack of games I haven't played on the Switch yet.
