I'm also in agreement that the camera itself is not working correctly because I have the exact same problem. My GoPro 6 Black began to malfunction, by heating up and doing all kinds of weird things. I had to reformat the SD card and now my microphone doesn't work anymore. It worked fine before - for more than 1 year. However the onboard sound system DOES work but there is something definitely wrong with the circuitry when you plug in the external adapter. GoPro is crap. I'm not going to buy another one. I'm going to buy a different camera, completely different, a real Pro camera. I should have gone Pro a long time ago. My GoPro 5 fried and now my GoPro 6 is fried. So much for this crap! I'm sick of it!
Esmeralda Letts once Gopro send me the replacement in the warrantee it has been fine for a year. I’m sure the pro cameras have their own set of problems too. But in the future I hope to get a pro camera too. Canon m50 or canon sl2
This is so strange... I have 2 GoPro 4's and 2 GoPro 5's. I've been using the same Sennheiser 100 G3 mic system for 3 years. Used them on the 4's till I started having trouble with them (I shoot videos everyday - a lot of use). Bought the 5's and didn't have issues till recently. Now my mic doesn't work on the 4's and intermittently on the 5's. Same Audio n/a issue on one of the 5's. So... I'm switching to a Garmin Virb. Sounds like GoPro has too many issues.
Hey i solve it. Talk to gopro and i solve it. First i reset the camera settings, then i reset to fabrication setting, and third, i update manually the camera. Problem solve.
Thanks for this great vid, I am having a very similar issue as I was not able to get a sound from my mixer into the GoPro 6 using a USB C to 3,5mm adapter from Amazon, the audio input kept showing N/A in the GoPro settings, so it became clear to me that I need to use the original GoPro adapter to unlock this feature, despite the fact that this adapter is very bad designed and too big, it costs 75 Euro in my country, this shit is since 4 months not available, I am still waiting for many stores who purchased it on my demand but the delivery date keeps slipping for one month to another... Any recommendations on another adapter than the original GoPro which is compatible with the Hero6 ? I appreciate any help because I need to record the sound through a ''line in'' since the recorded audio quality of the internal GoPro mic is rubbish for my purpose. Thanks in advance. I didnt know there was another option for external mic adapters. I have only heard you can only use the GOPRO adapter. I tried using a regular adapter usbc-2.5mm from a phone but it will NOT WORK. I know the gopro adapter was on back order for a LONG time and this is a huge problem for gopro to keep customers happy. Last time i checked i saw it available on their website. Goodluck
It’s n/a if you don’t have any mic connected. If you use the external mic adapter it should not say n/a. Of it does it probably still is using internal audio not external.
This has just happened to me, so it’s the Go pro hardware then? If so this is ridiculous! Such an expensive piece of kit to fail so quickly! Only had my 6 for 3 years
the problem is your gopro usb c male connector is not aligned to your adaptor c port any more. Your connector cable is always twisted , that's why. I have the same issue
Idk my new adapter has been working and it’s always twisted too. It’s just a junk crap design. We should be able to connect a mic into Gopro 3.5mm port and call it good.

nighthawkzjp they need proof of purchase for GoPro. I was so lucky because I bought mine used but the seller provided the receipt. Maybe look at credit card purchase statements. Good luck

I just bought a gopro a weekend or so ago and I have this same problem. It is soo frustrating. Would you recommend I just return the camera or deal with Gopro to get it fixed?
BULLI KID. I wasted an hour with GoPro today; they are still no help! Everything worked fine until I let the app and camera link for the first time in 8 months and it updated the software. Thanks for the reply.
BULLI KID The system version is the only thing that has changed with my rig. I set it up around Sept last year and it had been perfect. I went for two runs a week apart in late April - one worked as per usual the other crap. The only thing I did between them was play with the app...forgetting I’d set it for auto update! Thx
