Yea, they are death matches literally. I was at an F1 boat race in Little Washington one year and one of the drivers flipped, nearly drowned if not did, but ultimately succumbed to the injuries from the wreck. Blink of an eye.

Growing up on the water, I was always told when it comes to the sensation of speed that 1mph on water feels like 2mph on land. Of course everyone's perception of speed is different, and the type of watercraft you're on plays a role, but IME that calculation was always pretty close for me. We had a 19ft roundabout that'd do 55mph with optimal conditions, and it felt like doing a ~100mph in a car. Doing similar on a Waverunner felt even faster since there wasn't a body of a boat around you.

Phantom menace is hands down the worst non-Disney Star Wars movie but the pod racing and Darth maul scenes are pretty epic.

Theres a difference between a boat hydroplaning at speed and a boat with hydrofoils...

They are boats. But they are designed to fly on the water. In an ideally set up rig, only the propeller touches the water consistently, while the front of the boat teeters back and forth on the two front sponsons. Unlimiteds are really the only class of hydro racing that use turbine engines like this. You will find other engine types in smaller classes.

@@nacecity225 There sure is a point of time where the propellers speed matches with the framerate of the GoPro causing the propeller to appear stationary, this effect can be seen on rotors of all kind. (Looks very neat with helicopters). In real life the light from the object is reflected / emitted equally over the entire rotation so instead of changing speed / freezing the rotating part starts to resemble a semi-opaque disc.

The windshield is from an F-16 fighter jet, and there is an escape hatch on the bottom of the cockpit, allowing the driver to escape in case the boat lands upside down in an accident
