It's update time again but I'm here to argue that the GoPro Hero 7 Black is absolutely still worth buying and might be the best option if you are looking for an action camera.
Its got fantastic image quality, great audio, 4k for days, and might be one of the best vlogging cameras ever made as it really does everything built into one camera.
But is any of that actually true?

I recently took out my eyeball styled Samsung Gear 360 (1st version) and Guru 360 gimbal version 1. I found neither have a working phone app or support anymore. So I looked up GoPro for a durable, waterproof action camera with gimbal like stabilization. I came across your video. I saw AAFES tonight had the GoPro Hero7 Black on sale for $250. I checked the Navy Exchange. $199 on sale. I also found that they had a coupon for 15% off $200 worth of purchases. I saw your GoPro Hero8 Black review which kept me with just buying the 7. So for a new GoPro Hero7 Black, 64GB Sandisk Extreme Plus micro SD card, action mount 3 piece pack, and two year extended warranty (given the talk of Hero7 Black breaking on other sites), I got all for $258. So the offer was something that I could not refuse.

titzmageex We would have to ask you what OS you’re using and etc so the easy answer for me is just keep using the SD card adapter. Can I ask what’s the benefit of plugging it straight in? I’m relatively new to the GoPro family

I’m on the fence between getting the 7 or 8. I’ll be using it mainly whike on the Harley and get together and events. Can you use the app for the 7 to transfer pics and video to your phone to share without a computer. Thanks. Great video.

I bought 1 and the audio cuts out when i played it back on my pc. Did you ever have that problem? Is this problem common? I had to go back and switch it for another. And yet the same issue. Audio cuts off. Is there a setting i have to have it in so that this stops? Great video by the way!!

My H7B seems to be more stable (no freezing or unexpected battery drain) after the last update however time will tell. For skin tones I shoot in flat then auto adjust in post. For nature GoPro color. Not sure I am into upgrading to the H8B for several reasons but will wait for your review. Use auto smart tone in Premiere (if the Pro version has that) to adjust the flat. I am really happy with how that looks for skin tones. On a side note my iPhone 11 has amazing video. I would spend the 699 for a camera like that alone. Fantastic low light etc etc etc.

I lost count but you didn't say it as often as I say "so" in my videos so... I think the audio on the 8 will beat the 7 but yeah the 7 has been a good camera overall although mine locks up a lot when I mount it on airplane wings.

After a long search for the right camera for me and my family, I just ordered the hero 7 $320 on amazon and I also ordered an extra lens just in case I break it and they discontinue the lens (march 10th 2020)

I use linear on my GoPro, but that's because I have a metal case with a 52mm filter. Otherwise on either wide or superview the edges of the filter show up. Oh well. Videos still look pretty good.

I love my GoPro Hero 7. I got my hands on a 8 and the max yesterday. I only plan to upgrade my gopro fusion to the gopro max. The GoPro hero 8 is great. To someone who doesn't have one at all I'd go with 7 to save money and keep an important feature of being able to swap out the lens cover.

I might try the MAX out but it doesn't really interest me and the 8 so far hasn't really impressed me. So far (one day into using the 8) I still think the 7 is better.

I’ve just upgraded from my Hero 5 to the Hero 7. I really like the 7 a lot but it is quite a different beast to the 5 with regards to colour. I have found the new GP colour to be more pronounced and often, it sends skin coloir into the realms of ‘Thunderbirds Puppet’ skin tone! So I stay with flat colour but the other thing I noticed was that auto exposure seems to verge quite a bit on over exposure. So if I notice that, then I use the EV comp, but that can be difficult for vlogging, when you can’t see the screen and what it’s doing to the contrast levels. Like you, I’m not as keen on the interface as the 5. Prefer the 5 I think. As far as the 8 goes, I’m quite interested to see any new ‘foibles’ that may appear first before even considering one and also what the add on units are actually like when they appear. Now it’s going to change shape, I wonder whether that will drive older GP lwners to upgrade to something else that fits the old GP accesories and grips father than change eco system to the 8? It could cause a shift amongst users ......

Tip: if the price is too high for you, check sites where people sell them 2nd hand. Most of the time people sell them because they never used it or used it almost never

After the firmware updates the Hero 7 Black actually is my favorite action camera for action however, the 8 seems to cater to the vlogging community and I think it can but it needs a lot of expensive add ons like a proprietary 3.5mm adapter, a light for low light, ND filters, extra batteries, go pro shorty or go pro el grande etc. etc. So what I did was purchase the GoPro hero 4 black after watching EDD talk about it in 2019 for $60 bucks on eBay and I have a phone gimbal, and the very affordable Movo lavalier mic with 3.5mm audio adapter with a cage and that works really well as a budget friendly vlogging camera with excellent audio. So basically you can have both for the entry price of the GoPro hero 8.

I'm seriously considering replacing my GoPro 1 with a Session 5. I'm seriously more into low profile cameras and it seems to do all I need/want anyways. I just miss having that bulletproof case they use to come with back then.

Just bought mine and have come acrossed some issues. Have you any with the codec for recording in some option? I have choppy playback in my pc when I watch some files back. And also my camera isn't showing up on my pc when I plug it in. I have to insert the memory card.

I use my GP7 for 90% of my talking while walking vlogging. It is AMAZING! It's small, unobtrusive, and the image is awesome. I keep it on 1080p, linear. Honestly, I wish my Olympus EM1 MII was half as good for arm length vlogging ;-) THanks for this video though, i have never actually used the super slo-mo options. I will have to give them a try, "PLuuuouussh!" (exploding head hands) ;-)

i just returned the 2018 gopro. it was horrible, heat problems and it would over heat and turn off. upgraded to the m50 . for vlogging

this damn camera has so many issues, even with the recommended SD card, it still has issues. But the damn quality and video stabilization is suburb. As a motorcycle rider, i get anxiety sometimes wondering if the camera is recording, or did it shut off while riding.

Interesting, this means the software issue appears only with updates... I don't want to accuse without proof but I will not be suprised if Go Pro created those freeze issue to push up for an upgrade.

I noticed my GoPro hero 7 black, freezes and refuses to fully switch off without taking the battery out. I use quick capture to start recording, I even did a full factory reset issues. This only happened after update.

@@Leonheart18 I think that may be a bit extreme, but I have the same hunch for the Hero 6 update where the stabilization became crappy even though it was supposed to be more natural. I think they did that for the hero7 so those with the 6 would want the 7. I have the 6 and will eventually upgrade. thinking of upgrading to the 9 when it comes out eventually lol or an Osmo Action 2 depending on what that entails.

Yes, that's pretty much how my hero 7 behaves, it was the same before the update though, if you hold the power button for 10 seconds, you may not need to remove the battery. The only thing that was fixed after v1.80 was the freezing issues when rotating the camera after recording. There are also other niggles with the stabilisation, going through some of my past footage I noticed that with odd video clips the hypersmooth goes haywire and overcompensates, I only ask for two things from a camera picture quality and reliability, Gopro have failed miserably in one of these.

For anyone who shoots video of action sports, having just one video camera is not enough. While it was be fantastic to have 3 or 4 Hero 8's, not everyone can afford to do that. So yes, hang onto your Hero 7, you will always find a use for it.

Mine is collectiong dust. It's not that it's not a great action cam it is. I just find I don't really need an action cam much these days. G.A.S got me again when I bought it. Oh man nice use of usurp there! :-)

You could use it for a substitute other than your phone or for a backup you don't necessarily have to use it like an action cam.

I think the Osmo Action is better than the GP7, and they’re the same price now. The OA has a better build, better battery system, front monitor, bigger rear monitor, much better UI with custom presets, dewarp in 4K 60 fps, no freezing/bugs, more frequent updates, Rocksteady is better than Hypersmooth 1.0, better lens cover and ND options, etc.

The freezing is usually the result of the sd card not being fast enough. I switched cards and haven’t had it freeze since.

I love my Hero 7. The image quality and stabilization are awesome! I see no reason to buy the 8. Unless, the Hero 8 has a definite fix for the "freezing" problem. My 7 has frozen up on me a few times, making me miss my video opportunity. Not good at all, even though it is rare. From what I have heard about the 8, it does NOT do better in low light, and still may or may not freeze occasionally. Because of that, I don't see a reason to upgrade at this time.

I don't like the exopensive gopro plugins eg external microphone, external battery. The gopro batteries are too small. They need to be twice the mah. I just bought a GoPro 7 Black. It was $450aud while a 8 is $600 aud.

I have never owned a GoPro, but I've seen quite a few videos reviewing the Hero 8, and I am totally impressed with its features. It appears that the Hero 8 will vastly outdo the Hero 7. While I'd love to have one, they are still not affordable for me. If someone offered to give me an old Hero 7 for free, I'd take it, but I would not pay for a Hero 7 anymore, knowing the Hero 8 exists.

I have a policy to not watch other videos about a product that I'm going to make one about but in my day with the 8 so far I'm not ready to recommend it over the 7. The 7 blew me away and the 8 seems to be a few steps forward but a few steps back.

@@TheEverydayDad It is a good idea not to listen to other people's opinions before you get a chance to put the camera thru its paces and do your own evaluation. On a positive note, it is good to see GoPro still aggressively trying to improve their cameras. It can only mean their competition will have to push to keep up, even with cheaper versions.

Oh bad news. They took the one of the worst attributes of the Hero 7 White (not removable glass) was added it as a feature of the H8B.... But don't worry.... it's gorilla glass so can't break..... right....
