I upgraded to the Hero 7 Black from a Hero 4 Silver. Massive difference, and very welcomed. HyperSmooth is da bomb, 4k, faster FPS, etc. Definitely a great little camera to take on vacations, too, not just for sports.
I got mine 2 weeks ago and I'm loving it. Except for a few things it's perfect! - Battery life is 1 hour (maybe less) even on 1080p 30fps. While riding I had to keep it tethered to an external power source for it to run longer. - It runs HOT! I mean actually hot to the touch, it makes me worried. - I have it chin mounted in my helmet and the voice command doesn't work very well even if I'm on a stop. - There's this weird thing that happened. I was on 64% battery and it just froze while recording. (It wouldn't respond to any input, and my phone can no longer detect it. Only way I got it back was when I removed the battery, put it back in, and then start the camera again. When I turned it on. All my ProTune setting were reset to default values. But all other settings stayed the same. It was weird)
I've just bought a Hero 7 Black (in Feb 2021) to go with my Hero 4 black. The 7 cost me £175 (UK pounds) and it looks as good as new. It was a no-brainer. I use my Hero 4 as my main studio camera on one of my RU-vid Channels (with separate audio), because of the ultra wide angle (I have a cramped studio), and it is superb. I'm really looking forward to trying out the 7.
I took mine to Arches National Park 🏞 last week and in my latest RU-vid channel video, I posted a great video which I took when on this family trip. I placed the Hero 7 Black on the car’s dashboard and it took epic 4K video whilst driving through the park. Big mistake that I made was to take 4K 24fps video at 4:3 aspect ratio. I was really really bummed out! Hadn’t realized due to sheer excitement of being at the park! 😔
@@matt4477 I should have used the 16:9 aspect ratio instead. This ratio offers crisp wide-view near cinematic look, especially for landscapes (and the need for taking wide landscape videos). However, using a 4:3 aspect ratio renders the video with black bars on either side on RU-vid. The video is often squared instead of rectangular.
Thanks for the awesome video!! I'm considering this Hero 7 Black but, I've seen a lot of reviews stating that there is a lot of stuttering/jitter while panning slowly. Have you had this issue? If so, is there a work around? Thanks again for your awesome informative video. Ray
Coming up from a Hero 4 Silver, I am impressed with the quality. The Black Hero 7 lives with me everyday for that impromptu moment of video. Very versatile camera. Thanks for the video.
hey, the hero 7 black just had a software update (at least mine did) and it fixed most of the issues with the H7B! random camera crashes after recording - GONE random camera crashes whilst recording - GONE rear touch display not working until you remove the battery and restart it - GONE flaky connection with the smart remote - GONE its all fixed in version 1.80!
Once again... Awesome video!! I followed all your vid's on the Mavic Air and now looking at the Hero 7. I have a couple questions; 1) Have you noticed any heat issues? I'm asking because I've seen some complaints. The plan is to use 4K 60fps. 2) Is there a mode on the Hero 7 that eliminates all fish eye from the sides? Thanks again! I always enjoy your videos and constantly learning from you!! Ray 😊👍
I agree that you'll not need any gimble with a GoPro 7 Black as I used to have 3 gimbles for my GoPro 4 black and a DJI Osmo. I threw away all of them and bought myself a GoPro 7. I mount it on my bike rides and the video quality is so smooth no shaking even when on ruts.
Superb video and pretty informative. Do you face heating issues shooting 1080p @ 240 fps. Mine shut off after 31 minutes of recording due to overheating. The lense part becomes so hot that you can't even touch it. Are the other 7 Hero Black owners facing such over heating issues. Based on the inputs I will make a decision to either return or ask for a replacement. TIA
I'm with you. I'm loving buying this camera. For my videos I was using the 5 then the 6 with the adapter and a rode mic. With the 7, the videos are so stable and no more needing that dam adapter for external audio. Another great vid EDD.
Just want to chime in about the 180 shutter speed and stabilization issue .. .(I didn't read all comments ;) ) - Electronic stabiiization doesn't work with the 180 rule - all electronic stabilisation need very fast shutter speeds to actually analyse the footage. It was a known issue even before GoPro implemented their version - a startup called SteadXP made a gadget to stabilize dslr and gopro footage and explained very well why they needed more tha 1/250 and ideally even a 1/500 to smooth out the footage... That's probably also the problem that causes stabilisation to suck in low light situations
I have used Sony Action cam for a bit. They just cant seem to keep up with GoPro. I am determining on buying my first Gopro. You sold me on how easy it is to use. On how you can just pick it up and go! Thank You for the Great Video.
I just bought the hero 7 black. I also have a hero 5 session. my issue is trying to find a mic that works with that ext. gopro accessory. I've tried 4 so far and no luck. - I think that warping might also be your micro SD card read / write speed. What card are you using?
Great video, how can you run an external mike on the new 7 . How do you get around wind interference on motorcycles. I’ve just bought the new 7 and upgraded from the silver 4 which I found good with an external mike under the rear seat of my bike. Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺 👍😎
The shaky footage in lowlight is absolutely an issue. We took some footage last week indoors in bright artificial light. It was on auto mode. HyperSmooth 2.7k 60FPS. The footage was so jerky and laggy it was unusable. Sunny outdoors though, absolutely loving the HyperSmooth. Saturation was a little too heavy on auto. We upgraded from the 5 though so it is such a huge difference in video quality alone! And I used to have to bump the saturation a bit in FCPX on the 5. I hope they can fix the lowlight situation. If so, it will be true love.
Great video, just found your channel and enjoy your work. Any thoughts on which brand of ND Filters Im looking at the PolarPro Cinema series? Mine arrives today.
Hi! For transfer the videos from Gopro 7 black, to PC my Gopro doesn't work with the original cable WHICH I received in the package, BUT it works with the cable from the Gopro charger:), WORK EVERY TIME! And it doesn't matter if gopro is on or not, but I think it is safer to connect the cable when it is stopped. When disconnected you must stop the Gopro, I don't have the safe eject option I hope I was helpful!
the dark stabilization issue, is something mountain bikers will experience, due to riding in the forest, but a good way to make stable footage with good angle is to use chin guard on a full face helmet, mount it in the front. this way you don't need the stabilization, and the stabilization does not work in linear mode, at least according to what I have seen, so a linear lens/lens without distraction would be nice upgrade.
Yup, it's a great little camera. As my first action camera, I'm still blown away by it. What do you keep your sharpness and FOV set at? I've been seeing turn the sharpness down to low, keep it on medium...I think low is too mushy, but I don't play with sharpening in post.
I have had folks argue and go nuts when I said the Hero 7 Black was a gimbal killer and they missed the point. Technically is it better than a gimbal? No. But if you consider the cost/benefit of gimbal over the Hero 7 then you will see that the $300 you pay for the gimbal, chargers, and batteries just to get the minute improvement is it really worth the cost? No. That is why I say its a gimbal killer.
Look up my Century III revist video and you'll see how much I enjoy the GoPro. Still working on optimizing for low light, but damn, the Hero 7 Black is all that and a bag of chips.
You're absolutely right: stabilisation is a big deal on an action camera; I imagine it while skiing or riding my dirt bike... They have done a hell of a job with this Hero 7, I am curious how, technically, they've achieved it...I mean I got the general idea but I'd be interested in a bit more deep analysis of the super smooth tech...
I just bought the 7 this morning. I have a 3. Hypersmooth will be cool. Just received an akan gimble for my birthday. Better audio will be great too. I have a Ready Set Drone t-shirt also. Great review. What's up with GoPro stock?
Sorry if I missed this, but what is the focal length of the GoPro Hero 7 Black. I'm on the fence with either purchasing the Sigma 16F1.4 (E-Mount) for my Sony a6000 and then getting a gimbal (Ronin S) or getting the Hero 7 Black. The Ronin S, I'll be able to use it for my A7Riii too so it won't be a single use for the a6000. Got two kids (4 & 2) and I wanna use the setup for their vlogs and catching their active moments.
I just purchased the hero 7 black to vlog Disneyland with my children (4 & 6 yrs old). Can you recommend settings for this trip? Day one we will be at a water park; however, the other days will be at DL.
If you want as much video as possible set it to 1080p 60fps and if you want best quality 4k60fps. And of course turn on hypersmooth. If you can color grade turn on protune that s all
I just got mine 2 weeks ago. It's my 6th action camera, but my most recent previous GoPro was the Hero 4 Silver. I do really like the stabilization and video resolution, but have been bothered by a few things so far. I'm mostly doing adventure filming on skis, for now. I found the footage, using GoPro Color, way too over-saturated and contrasty, with poor dynamic range, and 'nuclear' colors that were far from realistic. I'll be shooting in flat profile and grading from now on. When using the 'auto' setting for audio (camera switches between stereo or wind-suppressing modes automatically), it sometimes causes sound dropouts/blank spots, when the camera detects less wind, and switches to stereo mode in the middle of a shot. I may activate the backup .wav file feature for when the processed audio fails. I found the touch screen somewhat laggy, and often doesn't feel my finger swipes, needing me to do it 4 or 5 times to get a response. This is often when my fingers are a bit dry and cold, so maybe it doesn't recognize me as a living being? The other thing that drove me crazy at first was that the side power button was nearly impossible to press with even lightweight cross-country ski gloves on, when the camera is in its frame. The button is just way too small, and has to be hit precisely in the center, for the power to turn on or off. I've worked around this mostly, but using 'quick capture' setting, to use the top shutter button to wake the camera up and start filming, and using voice command to shut the camera down. I'm wanting to test to see if the slide-to-zoom feature just applies a digital crop to the selected resolution, or actually keeps the desired resolution, and uses a smaller area of the sensor from which to extract the same number of pixels. Do know if a zoomed 4K image still has 4K of data? If not, it's no better than cropping in post, but I'll test that out. Thanks for your great reviews, always a pleasure to watch!
Going to upgrade from the hero 4 to the 7 soon. The hyper smooth really sells it for me! I’ve seen a few videos now and it looks like it works wonderfully!
It's worth switching to a Yi 4K just to make your life simpler. They have the sense to put a 1/4"-20 hole in the bottom of their cameras. The mounting options for GoPros are a real problem. You pay a lot extra for the GoPro name, then you need to put a cage on it and get a special adapter just to put it on a tripod. Recording videos is a chore. You need the cage on it to mount it. You need to sort out the Wi-Fi quirks in the app to frame your video. Then when you're done you need to remove the cage because you need to open the battery compartment to pull the SD card out. Then you've probably bumped it around enough that you need to reconnect the app to line up the video again. It's a tedious workflow, and there are better options. They need to put a 1/4" mount on their cameras, and they need to improve their software to the point that it can tell you if it failed because it couldn't write to the memory card or because it overheated. That's the minimum for me to ever consider another GoPro. But I have a feeling they're going to continue their downward spiral and be acquired by a competitor before any of that happens.
I'm thinking of upgrading. I use all yi-4k action cameras now(not 4k+) How much of a quality increase would I see in switching from those to a Gopro hero 6 black or 7 black in my "somewhat low-light" studio?? 🤔🤔🤔
very nice video... But how about battery-door-not-completely-close issue?? Because i think if i buy this, i want buy an extra battery too.. and if i and if I often remove the battery.. will it cause the battery door issue which is will make the water will going inside when the battery door not perfectly closed after a few months of use maybe? please answer this because i want buy GoPro hero 7...
Hey Dad, what settings do you use whilst cycling in the woods at 3:30? Wide, linear or super wide? Pro tune on or off? What settings if pro tune is on? 4K 60fps? Your footage of the cycling looks the best I have seen yet!!! Well done!!👍👌😁
Can't get hyped up when the image and sound of the camera in the room when you talk about the gopro is far better in every aspect. Which camera and mic are you using to make this video?
Approximately, what is the time one will get at the max resolution (4k 60fps) with 64GB of memory? (32GB and 128GB? does the time /capacity sale linearly?) Also, please do a video comparing the various ND filters as well as one comparing the GoPro with after market batteries. Thank you.
I take more photos than video. How does it do with stills? I’m traveling on a cruise in a month and want to leave my phone in my cabin while I go on excursions, which include water. I usually use my phone for pictures and video.
i get what your saying with trying the follow the rule of 8th, but having it come out with such good video in auto shutter its forgiven, i use it linear rather then wide with protune, leaves me with very little colour correcting, however i do notice alot of chromatic-aberration when shooting a bright blue shy through trees? have you notice this?
The stabilization sets this far above all other simple cameras. Not as versatile as DSLR or cine cams, but certainly the best grab and go camera around.
I filmed with my 7 black yesterday just holding the camera, no frame or mounts. When i put it on my computer the audio was horrible. Sounds like my fingers were covering microphones. My question is there a certain way to hold the camera naked without hurting the audio? Where is the microphones.
Love watching your videos . Yesterday i purchased hero 7 black dusk white color. Today i turned it off and kept on my bed after full charge. Then after aprox half an hour i came back and found that go pro was warm to hold. Then i tried to turn it on . It did not turn on. Then i attached it to charger and red light started. Then i tried to turn it on. It did. But there was a loss of 10 % battery What is the issue. This is my first action camera Please help
Any chance you could help me out with some issues im having with my Hero 7. Ive just bought a new hero 7 , last one I used was way back with a hero 3. when i try and set it at 4K it says "stabilisation not available" so I have to go back to 2.7k am i missing something? also i can seem to find "super view" only "wide" and "linear" Cheers.
found it , First I had to do an update , then change field of view to 16:9 , then i was able to select not only 4k and keep HyperSmooth but then was able to see the option and select "Super View"
@@imagesfromLA I think it pretty good, have been using it mountain biking and also on a week long through hike in Tasmania and im pretty happy with it. If you need a little action camera its def the best one yet and super easy to adjust settings ect once you spend a minute to get use to the menu ect.
sdushdiu.Approximately, what is the recording time one will get at the max resolution (4k 60fps) with 64GB of memory? (32GB and 128GB? does the time /capacity sale linearly?) Sorry for the long comment, makes for a good read 🤣 I used the z cam e1. For about a year. It is bigger than the gopro. But! It's a huge micro 4/3rds sensor inside. Specs wise it blows. But to have something as small as a action camera with a micro 4/3rd sensor was pretty dope for low light shots. Now I just rather carry the rx100v. Sorry for the long comment,
I just bought this exact go pro, my first go pro. Still need to get a 4k micro sd but I have a question about charging it. *It* came with a usb cord of course but the manual said not to use a wall charger, there is no actual charger so can I just use my laptop to charge it while I order or go pick one up?
just got a go pro hero 7 black few days ago im lovin it still discovering stuff. of course they can improve more stuff in the future but this is amazing little camera - cmon guys sub to the channel this guys needs more subs :D - greetings from Croatia
Does it create blurs or halos in the image when you take a pic of something moving if HDR was on? Does it take 6 or 7 secs to save an image to an Sandisk Extreme pro miniSD card?
I'd like to see it compared to the Sony FDR-X3000. I got the older GoPro 5 for travel filming, woulda spent more to get the Hero 7 but I can't justify it right now. For serious and stabilised filming I have the Osmo and soon the Ronin S on a Sony body.
just got a Hero 7 Black. right out of the box, it overheated and froze & shut off after 20 minutes of recording - 2.7k, 24fps. i charged the batteries fully and recorded in an air conditioned room for another 20 minutes the next day and it overheated again - 2.7k, 60fps. i'm puzzled as to how no Hero 7 video promoting the product on any channel has even mentioned overheating? it has happened literally the only 2 times i have used the camera. anyone else? i never, ever had this issue with my Hero 4 Silver at 2.7k. it didn't even get warm at all. this Hero 7 gets hot to the touch!
Just called gopro today.... same issue bro, used this thing like 3 times and it gets crazy hot only after a FEW minutes. 1st contact with gopro is good so far... sending me new battery and having be do a few things. Let's see what happens and see what they do if it doesn't work. Keep ya posted....
With all due respect (as I do appreciate your reviews!), I don't care if it is better than ice cream or trash. My question is much more practical. Given its poor low light performance and its propensity to shut down due to overheating near the end of its battery life in 4K, if one is buying a camera TODAY, should they buy the Sony fdr-x3000 with its superior low light performance and excellent gimble-free stabilization sans 4K 60fps; or the GoPro7 with its enhanced 4K performance sans low light performance? ....Or should one wait for the (hopefully) forthcoming update to the already two-year-old Sony x3000? So: GoPro7 or Sony x3000 now ---- or wait for the Sony update? Thanks...
about 1inch sensor, maybe it will improve low light situation, but after mavic 2 pro we know, we dont see much quality difference.... but price will be much higher. for low light will be better if hero make their own OIS system like boss and set shutter speed to min 1/50-60second, not 1/30or lower (it looks like that when i watch night movie from GP5-6-7)? i know you don't watch extreme sports like a downhill bike cup, but after new redbull rampage, know we can watch clips from helmet without headache :P EIS is hero6 in hard situation was really annoying to watch, sometimes better if it was turn of :D

I don't know how many here are aware of it. But there is stabilion software available for a $100 that is better than gopto's and works on any footage. I know it has to be done in post, but if it is important to you.
Ive had that stablization on and ive had it strapped to my chest and the playback was clear but i was walking and it was a bit bouncy so i swopped it onto my hat and it was still bouncy so ive no idea how to stop this can u help with this
Hi Everyday Dad, Nice vid! Just subbed. Been looking at the H7 as well as the 360 Fusion and 1X. Peter Mckinnon said mentioned in his video that optimal protune settings was set based on an ex-GP employee recommendation. That ex-employee then commented in the comment section that is worth looking into. Great advice to further enhance your videos as you’ve discovered. Let me know if you have the 360 cameras as they seem to give more versatility.
Great video Sir! Would love to see it compared to the hero 2018 and the old standby, Yi lite. All shot in 1080p and maybe even a few stills? 🤔 The first thing that would have prevented me from buying the white is non removable battery? 🙄 👎 🤬 Thanks for the video and take care! Bill in Utah
2018 is the same as gopro hero 5. You can actually download and install the software of hero 5 on hero 2018 and it will become and work exactly as the gopro hero 5. It will even record video in 4k 30fps! So if you want a comparison video between the 7 and 2018 u should actually look for hero 7 vs hero 5 because 5 its the same, exactly the same as 2018:) ps. and yes stay away from the white it doesnt worth the money. Buy the hero 5 if money is a problem. It works great.actually i think is better from the hero 6
Oops, you didn't mention the in-camera hyperlapse feature which I consider the be the #1 selling point of this camera. I have to admit, I'm very impressive with the Hero 7 Black, I wish I could afford one. If there's a downside, its so expensive that the average person could never hope to own one. Oh well, that's life.
Should you get the hero 7 black? Yes! Super yes! It will future proof you for the next years to come. It’s the best action camera out there in my opinion. Hopefully I’ll get my hands on one.
i just bought my first gopro and it happens to be the hero 7 black. im still testing it out and using all the settings but so far it seems really nice. bad side the $$$$ lol the only camera i ever owned is my cell phone so this will help with getting good footage. atm i only have a selfie stick. :( im a sad dude lol
Minimum & maxim iso that's nice, my gopro session dont have that only max. So I shoot n 800iso and fix brightness is Davinci resolve. Things I don't like with the 7: fish eye lens. audio own't be great lens is off center.
Nice review. The only thing I am missing on the Hero 7 Black is OIS like the Sony X3000 has, they could have done it if they wanted to :-( Of course a gimbal will sort this out but a gimbal including OIS or IBIS for this small action camera would have been epic.
