UNRELATED ANNOUNCEMENT: ***NEW Japan Series Incoming*** (Very Soon!) Honestly... So much easier than carrying my DSLR everywhere lol. What did you think? Let me know in the comments below! And if you haven't seen it yet, I tucked an announcement in This Video of me playing Shamisen: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-89U8eFyWIX0.html
Some countries and different shops use different frequency in the electricity. Like regularly pal/europe is 50hz and NTSC/USA 60hz. If you were using 60fps on a place that has 50hz frequency the light bulbs will "flicker", that's why it was a little better when you turned to 30fps. You should have gone for 50fps or 25fps. Also if you are using 50/25fps and get flicker, change to 60/30fps. I think that on gopro you have to change region or smth to set it PAL or NTSC to change to diff fps. Note: English is not my first language and I am not an electric engineer, so errors may apply.
this cam is dope! like the angles the horizon fixation and the better audio sound than other go pros ! the halicopter was not that loud what was kind of surprising!
Honestly this was EXTREMELY impressive. For the price of this camera, and the quality, and the low barrier to entry from filming to posting... it makes it a lot more approachable for people to start vlogging if they want to. This was a really helpful test video and it's great to know that if someone isn't sure about if they WANT to vlog or if they like editing that they can just pick up a quick and tiny relatively decent camera for like $500 and get started immediately. No bulky equipment. No massive bags. No hours and hours and hours of editing tutorials. Quick and dirty and you still get something REALLY useable out of it. It definitely does feel like a starting point though. Like, if you were to get serious about vlogging, you'd get "actual" gear (like a DSLR). But if you're just starting out, starting from social media photos (instead of videos), and aren't sure...what a great investment. Thanks so much for posting this.
There’s some really cool effects you can do with that. I love the way you edited the shots. Feels more natural and seamless, rather than gimmicky than a 90’s skate/music video.
All your videos never stop bringing me a constant sense of nostalgia! I grew up in Ichikawa city in Chiba as a kid, and Tokyo was my big back yard that only exists in faint memories in my mind. I've been back twice as an adult but never get to see as much as I would like, thanks for giving me a glimpse of home Norm!
I think it's perfect for vlogging for one reason: it's small, therefore it's pretty comfortable. That is important when filming, plus it makes your gear less heavy when you're out :3
Camera performance definitely good enough for vlogging in my opinion. Yes, it had some minor issues with e.g. low light performance or the fight vs helicopters but it did great with normal lighting. Also, I really like the added flexibility the 360 Camera gives in not having to decide on a fixed perspective (e.g. the car ride where you switched face view to front view, really good looking little shot made possible because of the camera) as you can reframe the footage as needed. Lastly, I really want a whole video shot only in the 360 sphere mode lol.
ohai Sherry! What a nifty lil camera, nice clear picture with it, and the different sizes/angles are very groovy. Sound was pretty good for vlog style shooting, yes it picked up the helicopter a lot, but it wasn't completely drowning out your voice like it would have on lots of other phones/cameras. Hope you guys had a fun time hanging out :) the illumination was just gorgeous!
so cool. loved the features. the helicopter did not compete w/ your vocals, there was no blurriness with quick moves & it was so small. thanks for sharing
I'm no expert on cameras or editing by any means, but the quality wasn't bad at all, other than some minor things you pointed out. Suprised how well the audio held up as well for such a small device.
Great Video as always, the 360 camera was cool, I have seen one other RU-vidr use a 360 camera, not sure what camera he used, but the entire video, the POV was chosen by the viewer which was cool.
Every visit should start with sushi. One time my mom and I went to a sushi restaurant at every city we went to: New York, London, Dublin, and Edinburgh. It was gorgeous. That full 360 mode was amazing! Editing looks a bit overwhelming, but so cool! The binge continues.
Norm, not sure if they still have the holiday season lights going at Yomiuri Land out in West Tokyo? But was there last year for the New Year and they had an amazing light show! Keep up the great work and always enjoy the videos!
Loved the Video. Those 360 shots open up a whole new world. The mic was missing out a bit but still I'd watch your vlogs made with this camera! Looking forward to your new japan series!
I'm a big fan of minimalist vlogging set ups. I personally vlog with an Osmo Pocket as my main camera as I'm addicted to the smooth gimbal action. I was impressed with the stabilization on the MAX 360. Though I wouldn't use it as a main camera but it would be great for getting perspectives you otherwise cant get or if you wanted to capture both reactions to an event as well as the event itself by duplicating the footage and framing in on both views separately. This was a fun test and I look forward to seeing what creative ways you use it.
Happy New Year!! Norm san, if I forgot to mention. Sounds like you have new tools, hope you have wonderful time with it. Oh by the way I missed music near end of video, bring back memories when I was child.
That is one cool camera! I'm impressed with how it manages to make that airplane cabin look so roomy, but 2:18 *really* blew my mind. Antoine de Saint-Exupéry would approve. 😄
Loved this video a huge bunch, was very, very impressed with the quality of this video and the lack of jiggling. I'd love to see it used underwater as well. Keep up the great videos Norm, from one canuck to the other.
Wait... Norm's now at 62k subs?? It feels like yesterday it was only around 12k when I first joined xD. Wow does time fly... Also congratz to Sherry hitting 20k!!
haha thanks mate~ We've had a great time together so far haven't we? Actually really happy to have you here still!! What comes next is all the fun stuff!
I loved this camera review vid Norm. I'd personally really like to see more of it. Especially that light show in the very very wide 360 view where it looks like you are walking on a mini planet, I just love that view. But side bar aside 😉 definitely do more with this camera.
Wow so so cool Norm! Such a cool camera! I have found something new of late, that alot of flickering now days can be from LED lights, but good to know that by changing the frame rate fixes it.
Been binge watching your videos, after seeing you in one of Sharla's video. Enjoying the content, and there's so much you show about Japan I want to see. Currently in my first year of college to get a degree so I can go to Japan via the JET program.
Impressive! Then again me and tech are acquaintances at best. Also that spotted pattern shirt at the end made me think Norm was wearing a mesh t-shirt. I mean... why not?
Yay, Sherry video ♥ her smile always makes me smile. Norm, have you tried the "normal" non 360 version so you can compare to this one. If so, is the quality better, motion blur, flickering and so on?
Great breakdown on the camera Norm. 📷👌 I currently have been using a Contour camera, for my atving videos, for the past eight years or so. I just make them for friends to see, from our rides together. Looking at upgrading to a newer camera soon. Maybe this camera might be the one I'm looking for. With all the great features it offers and especially with editing. It sounds pretty good. Thanks for sharing. 🙂👍👍
I really like it, Norm😊 I watch someone else vlogs with Go pro so maybe I get used to watching it(but it’s not even Japan) but if you use 360 when you shoot night time especially from the roof or mountains, it would be really really nice and I’d really love to see it. And I can’t wait new series!!
Generally 360 cameras feel like a weird gimmick, but some of the shots you had were so fascinating to see. When you were waiting for the show to begin and moved the camera up and around it was trippy in the best way. This was also a great way to show off that light show tbh so I’ll allow it 😅
Cool video - recently bought myself a gopro Max and have to say really do enjoy using it and you can get some really awesome footage (especially on motorbikes) and iv also found the mic's to be superb, especially at reducing wind noise on the move!
The quality actually seems really good! I’m not a huge fan of that fishbowl feel from the lens because it makes me a tad motion sick, but it didn’t seem to do it all the time.
Norm, I was impressed by the quality of the camera in all the stress tests you put it through, but the flicker is the one area that could be a deal breaker for a more professional look. Sound capture was pretty impressive. But one does have to wonder if the screen is very usable, especially at arms length. Your production quality is quite high, so for you the GoPro 360 is probably better for augmenting a story than relying on it as your main device. How does it compare with a new iPhone?
GoPro MAX has become my absolute favorite camera to use. The hardest part about it is not getting carried away with all the amazing views (tiny planet, hamster wheel, angel view, ....). MAX not only motivates me to go out and capture content, it makes editing the video fun as well. AND, it keeps getting better (new update just released) and so does the mobile app! AND for Windows users, new Desktop software coming soon 😁 and is in the last stages of Beta!
I like all the cool modes you can do with the camera like the 360 little planet-esque mode, but as a daily driver, I'm pretty skeptical. It's also definitely not meant to be used at night since low light is where you see its sensor limitations. I saw that you had problems recording some scenes because of the light flickering; is there a way to adjust shutter speed either in-body or in the app? I doubt it, but I'm not too familiar with the newer GoPros (my only GoPro was a Hero4 Black). If that's the case, you could use clip-on ND filters so the GoPro doesn't have to slow down the shutter speed so much and the lights won't flicker. I know you wanted to show the camera as-is for this video, but just some food for thought for future vids with this camera.
yes there is a way to adjust the shutter speed inside the menu of the camera - also its actually really not THAT bad in low light but good/normal light is where it shines!
I'm impressed by the results. GoPro cameras are all about the capturing the moment, any moment, so I think even for vlogs like these the 360-degree perspective is valuable. Now we just need a VR vlog...
Nicely done😆 I had no idea how things were gonna turn out when we were filming but I really enjoyed watching it. Thanks for having me on such a interesting experiment!
Wow the go Pro was amazing. 360 is really incredible way to film, and Im guessing the app makes it easy to pick the view you want t display and so on. But that was really amazing and I loved the lights show at the end.
I'm curious how this has impacted your vlogging/fliming style. Now you don't have to do the "Norm Camera Flip" or any of the other intentional framing changes you typically use for transitions. I would guess the 360 footage makes that easier because to can do all the movement after the fact and don't have to think about it. The transitions are so much of your typical filming style. Do you prefer manually constructing your transitions or creating them after the fact in edit?
lol I dont do as many of the flips as I used to, so no major impact on that side but overall its given me more freedom as I dont 100% NEED to pull out the DSLR for every single shot!
Didn't sound too bad! A lot more low end than high end, and could hear more background noise. The 360 shots were cool! Though it does take a little bit to get used to seeing the slightly curved image. And the little GoPro aside at the end! XD
Wow the image is still surprising sharp even after cropping. i can totally see this becoming more popular for vlogging as you dont have to bother with framing
Would love to see some sort of breakdown on how you reframe, or edit some of your videos. Most people never show that side, and I feel that if anybody would show us, it would be you. Thanks again. That was a great video, I really love the look when you zoom in, and out and how it changes the entire look, and feel of the video.
It looks pretty cool, Im impressed with how you can see more around you than a flat video and that horizon thing is an amazing feature. There is those minor sound muffling.....aaaaand maybe a bit of video tearing and also it struggles a bit on stabilizing the video.....i think that part hurt my eyes a bit. But overall its one a few really cool cameras. Honest Opinion. Cant wait on the translator video.
Color me impressed. And I was really surprised at the affordable price seeing that it comes with the kit. Were you using the grip that comes with the camera as you are holding it or using another? And I am really looking forward to your translator video that you referred to in your last video with Sherry. The app on my phone leaves a lot to be desired and I am excited about the other possibilities that are out there.
Looks more than good enough for vlogging! Prefect for when you're out and about, maybe you just need need a little clip-on microphone to help with the audio
Thanks for this, been trying to decide on a nice all in one vlog rig for a round the world solo bikepacking tour without carrying gimbal, lavalier and other mics etc etc. This looks like it might be a good route to head 😎 subscribed 🙌
I find the nature scenes like the autumn leaves look great with the 360, but with the more urban scenes the distortion gets more crazy. The globe mode definitely looks cool but not as a everyday thing. Does going through the 360 footage mean more work during the editing though?
Honest opinion: A solid effort that came out way too late, and isn’t worth its weight in pennies. While on its surface, it’s not a bad idea It’s an action cam that clips together.... 😂 (Things that clip together also tend to fall apart. Not ideal if you’re clipping it to a moving vehicle or biking down a mountain lol) Fun fact:!Test models had to be taped together if doing any actual action so that that the pieces of the camera wouldn’t separate 😂 The larger sensor mod is somewhat appealing, but with instsa360s terrible choice in very low quality microphones, it’s basically a crippled camera that can only be used for Video So you’re better off just getting the Insta360 one x (or GoPro max) if you want 360, using an actual camera if you want a bigger sensor, getting an insta360 go if you want a cheap and easy action can, or getting a GoPro hero 8 if you want an action cam that can record audio as well! (Or if you want a mixed camera like they’ve done here, just get the MAX lol. It does basically everything this does, and doesn’t come apart 😂)
As someone with a very old laptop mainly used for typing this would be great as I’d like to start vlogging soon so being able to use an app would be great
RU-vid why are you not telling me properly when Norm uploads a video x.x Oh well have two to watch now Camera is definitely a nice asset and the 360 mode is amazing
I'm really quite impressed by the quality a camera like this has for vlogging, though audio was touch and go as was focus.... But some of the cool stuff you can do really outweighs that in my opinion, especially the zoom out with the little big planet vibes going on. So should you do it again? Yes, it's fun, it's different and you can get some sick angles with it. Would I use it to vlog every time? Heck no, it's just not meant for it and you can tell, but again it's a fun treat here and there. Lastly, I love videos with Sherry she is so awesome!
I think this camera was comparable to a vlog style DSLR it is a bit rough but it is better than a phone and I think the video was nice. I lliked it. I wouldn't use it for everything but for vlog down the street to a restaurant or to a park or shop, i think in your area it'd be ok. If you were in a wide open space I would go with your larger DSLR set up. Side note, I wonder how many younger folk were on their first date for that light illumination dislpay 😍
I dig it! I think it would be a great camera for those ASMR type night time OR daytime Japan walks especially since it picks up a helicopter in the distance just as clear as your voice.
4:28 "...luckily there's still some fall leaves to enjoy..." Checks weather app for Edmonton- "-14C, Wind Chill -19C, Forecast-Snow". I think I hate you (no I don't!) Wow! That's a lot of traveling in 72 hours. I'm really interested in the GoPro Max 360. The technology seems to advance so quickly these days. It's always nice when you hook up with Sherry. Your shared experience makes for very enjoyable videos.
I think the camera worked pretty fine BUT like you laready mentioned in the video, the sound at noisier places isnt the best on that camera :D Still a very cool device for sure! Looking forward to new videos
