The last few updates I believe resolved the issue with the RAW audio syncing. I don't have that issue with my GoPro 10. I have it on RAW with high and it sounds fantastic. Full range of sound and no distortion even in loud environments. It's nice having that separate audio track as a WAV file too
This is an outdoor action camera not st in my living room audio test camera. The Media Mod sounds great when you're outside and it's windy or too much background noise for example!
The Hollywood clackerboard was used to align the sound track with the video, regardless of the audio recording device used. That may help you with manual audio alignment.
Disadvantage of media mod For a motovlogger using media mod is while changing battery you have to remove gopro from media mod. Setting the angle of camera is a big headache for beginners.
I think I understood most of what you said, but you provided a lot of information, that I’m going to have to listen to again. Thank you for the vid, you worked hard on it.
I'm jealous you were not trapped with this daylight robbery of media mod hahaha I found this helpful video too late (just now).... I just bought media mod last weekend. The audio quality is crap especially when you speak behind the camera as it sounds so muffled or nasally. If you speak in front of the camera, it's ok.
They should make a media mod without the built in mic but everything else the same at a lower price. They could even get away with keeping the same price with no mic if it's guaranteed rain proof.
I think that would be a great idea. And while they are at it, they should also give the MediaMod it's own connection to the GoPro mount. Because the way it is setup now, you always have to take the gopro 100% off of any mount to change batteries and access the SD Card. There is a lot they can improve 👍.
Thanks for the video. What would you recommend me for vlogs outside? I will be walking around thailand also want to potentially interview people in the future
If you are looking to get the GoPro Hero 9 or 10, I'd go with the Media Mod and attache the Røde Wireless GO II so you have two transmitters and can even do interviews that way. As a backup, I would consider getting something like the Røde VideoMicro (around 60$) just to have a small shotgun that does not need a battery and is pretty good with the wind.
I'm currently working with VideoProc - a new freeware video editing tool which is specifically made for vloggers. Now they are holding an action video contest and you can win a GoPro Hero 10 and more by submitting a video. Check out this contest at: crsp.li/VideoProcGoProContest
I was so upset at the media mod microphone. Almost makes me not want to use it and feel like I wasted my money. I will give it a second try with an external mic and maybe a light to see if it is worth it.
This is greatly helpful. I had my doubts about the media mod and you detailed what it is actually good for. I can now decide if I actually have any of these use cases. Also: Thank you for testing the Rode Video Mic NTG. I have one and would always want to use with the deadcat outside. I feared I’d end up with it in the shot. Thanks for confirming!
Thank you, that's great to hear that the video was helpful for you. In terms of VideoMic NTG and being in the shot: thanks to the design of the NTG and the ability to move the mic back with the rycot shock mount it can be out of the shot… but then it would be pretty complicated to still use a dead-cat 🙈. To be honest, I think the best solution really is to use a Wireless Go with a wind fluff.
It's absolutely disappointing. I really don't understand why though. At this point I actually don't really like to use the media mod for anything but the extra ports 🙈. And for that it's just too expensive (and clunky). Hope they come up with a better solution at some point.
I also got the media mod and I was also very disappointed by the sound quality of its internal mics. They sound worse than the gopro internal mics, no matter in which circumstances. As a small vlogging setup I enjoy using the Sennheiser MKE 200 with the gopro. It's small enough to not reach into the gopro's field of view.
I was too late to find this video. I just bought media mod last few days ago and then I found this. Yes Im so disappointed on this media mod because audio is very bad If I speak behind camera. Very low and bad quality. It is ok when I speak in front of the cam.
That's true. I have tested both and found that with the Røde VideoMicro I preferred it off to the side instead of above. However, the mic tends to bump into the image every now and then when in linear horizon leveling mode.
Can you plug a "non-powered mic" into the mic jack (in the media mod) and then will the GoPro provide its own internal power to receive/record the audio signal? Have you tried that test?
If you mean a mic that needs Plug-In power like the Røde VideoMicro (has no battery and needs 5V from the camera)… then yes, this mic does work and the 3.5mm Jack does provide 5V Plugin-Power.
The media mod mic almost sound like it’s out of phase. Usually when you have phase issue with a mic it involves a second mic. When the two mics are summed to mono you’ll lose lots of low end when they are out of phase and the sound becomes nasally. Maybe there was weird setting somewhere using more then one mic? Or maybe the capsules was defective, a defective mic can also sound similar to that.
@@JohnWolfrik Thank you for sharing this update. That's really helpful. I wonder if it would also work with the Hero 10… but THB, at the moment I am not willing to buy one just to test that 🙈.
I have media mod for my go pro 10 andni wantednto use it as a webcam for my twitch streams but its not working. Its just black but OBS can detect cam link but its just black please help
I use a Go Pro Hero 10 with a media mod connected to the Rode Wireless Go 2 setup and have come across an intermittent issue: at times, the Go Pro stops recognising that the Media Mod is attached and audio input switches to the internal Go Pro mic - very annoying as most times I don't realise what has happened until I am reviewing my footage later. Have you come across this issue? Any advice would be welcome. I love my Rode Wireless setup but not being certain if it's connected while filming is driving me crazy!
Thank you for the video! If I’m understanding right, the HDMI out will not allow monitoring during recording (not streaming, just video recording)? Have you tested it to see if you can either A. Charge battery while recording, or B. Run off external battery via USB C? If it doesn’t either allow HDMI monitoring while recording or allow power (if not charging) via external battery bank, they’ve really missed the boat on usability especially with the extra mic being less than awesome. Thank you!
@@ChrisSpiegl they eventually need to build it the same size as the GoPro with the media mod part of it. All one unit with some heatsinks etc. But use a really good mics
Gruss Thomas
Hello MinimalWave1982, sorry for the late reply but I wanted to make sure I tested this and looked at the available options first. Generally, there is no real "Gain" adjustment on the GoPro. This is the same with the Media Mod & External Microphones. However, with the Media Mod, it is possible to choose between 5 settings for the 3.5mm Jack which may be useful: - Standard (for microphones which do not need any power like for example the Røde Wireless Go II which is self powered). - Standard +20db (for microphones which do not need any power but you want the mic to be 20d louder). - Powered (for microphones which need "plug-in-power" like for example the Røde VideoMicro or VideoMic Go II) - Powered +20db (for microphones which need "plug-in-power" and you want the mic to be 20db louder). - Line (this is only useful when you connect a line out from, for example, a hardware audio recorder). I hope this explains that a bit and helps you with your question.
Hi i am having problem with gopro brand media mod, I have removed side cover before inserting to gopro media mod, I have gopro 9 and 10, my gopro media mod fits with with gopro9 but doesn't fit with gopro10...Can't be two different media mod between 9 and 10? It's so weird.
If you are looking for something to record yourself talking, I'd check out the Zoom F2 which is a small lavaliere body pack recorder so you can record yourself talking while doing the activity and film with the GoPro.
I am planning to start recording on Infinix Note 11 pro 4k using 3.5mm audio built-in jack. I already have Rode Lav+ mic with long cable and a dual mic multiplexor. Was just considering using Gopro but I guess it's not the best option due to audio limitations
I mean, if you have the phone which can do very good audio in itself, there would not be any reason to go with the GoPro. Use what you have and all that.
Hi Chris. We have the new IDOLCAM VlogStar V2 shotgun/Lavalier microphone in one, small size, perfect for GoPro, can we send you one to you to play with?
Yes, the metering works with external microphones as well. Sadly only on the back display though 🙈. Something kind of annoying: the metering only works with the media mod mic enabled or the external mic selected (which is automatically selected when the media mod mic is active and a mic is plugged in). Sadly, the metering is not available if you just want to use the GoPro camera mics.
@@ChrisSpiegl oh wonderful! I'm debating to get cage + adaptor but then I felt like this mkr3 cost effective and small form..but then again gopor might change the size again 😅
@@ScottyInVancouver If GoPro changes the size, then you can also just sell the old GoPro and the cage or Media Mod. I am using the Media Mod and it's working well so far. And all things considered: the GoPro is not waterproof no matter what (with adapter or media mod).
@@ChrisSpiegl I would like some good crispy audio of my voice for when I’m riding down a hill and not worry about some filtering or sound canceling of my own voice, because of the wind. that rare ability of the wind sound muffle my voice can you distort the immersive experience to the viewers. if that makes sense. And thank you for responding that means a lot
@@Deafrant I would suggest something like the Røde Wireless Go II or maybe the new wireless DJI competitor. This would give you a chance to have a mic near your head and with the wind muff that would help with the filtering as well.
Is it possible to use a USB C adapter with the Rode SmartLav+? And is the internal audio processing quality better than an internal audio processing quality from my Samsung Galaxy S20+. I would externally record my voice with the Rode SmartLav+ on my phone and adjust it in post
Not exactly sure what you are saying. Either you want to use the Phone or not use your phone? I also do not use any android phones. I know that the SmartLav+ can be used with the Lightnig to Headphone adapter for the iPhone - so it would most likely work with a USB-C headphone jack adapter on the Samsung as well.
When i record smt while looking at gopro like selfie, voice is good. But when i shot smt n talk behind camera, my voice is so low. What’s solution? I Have gopro 10 n think it has two different mics but as i said my voice is low when I talk behind it. Thanks
The GoPro has multiple microphones. You can try to go I to the settings and see if you can select which mic to use. I think with the media mod that is possible. Not sure off the top of my head if this is also possible without the media mod.
is it possible to use the media mod front facing mic to get sound from the front and use the mic plugged in the jack mounted on top to record audio from the your voice at the back ?
@@Haworthsmobileshine Yes, it would have been. In theory you could use one of the Deity mics which can go front and back. But I would have to confirm that the GoPro actually takes in a stereo signal via the Media Mod Mic Port.
@@ChrisSpiegl GoPro Pro 3.5mm Mic Adapter, BH #GO35MA • MFR #AAMIC-001 , and a cage to hold and get 2 cold shoes. SmallRig Camera Cage for GoPro HERO10/HERO9 Black, BH #SM3083 • MFR #3083. I haven't tested yet... I wasn't sure if I should use these, or media mod. (That's how I found your review) . I think media mod audio sounds bad in the videos like yours. Cheers
@@tomsutcavage114 That's an interesting idea. But I do not know if this adapter even works with the Hero 10. It's not listed as compatible and I have not seen anyone with that USB-C to 3.5mm adapter. And including the cage you're basically paying the same as the Media mod once again (and accessibility to the camera is only marginally better.
GoPro is not meant to be used inside the room all the time. you are testing mic in a controlled environment which doesn’t help at all. you worked so hard but it’s not giving any clue. audio test should be done outside in the noisy and windy area, tc
Thanks for the video. I was wondering why I couldn't get this Hero 10 to work with my Atem Mini Pro. I was using a USB-C to HDMI cable, but still no video signal. No sure why that doesn't work, but I will try the media mod route and see if that works. I can get a video signal via OBS but not in Zoom.
All interesting issues. Not sure why it doe snot work in Zoom for you… I think in WebCam Mode it should just work. And with the USB-C to HDMI, you're probably not going to get that to work because they are not really supporting these USB standards.
@@ChrisSpiegl Thanks. Went to Best Buy at lunch today and picked up a media mod and problem solved. And I was able to find an open box one for $10 off. 😃
Hi I want to know how to change gopro subscription. Because my sister she got it for me from US right now subscription is on her name but I'm going to use it ahead so.
Good grief what a pain in the ass audio is. Im planning to do multiple camera views on land and on my motorcycle. Not sure what to go with. I was thinking of using any action cams (Go-pro or other) set them up and just record video from differnt camera's and record audio from a mic i plug into my cell phone and attached to my shirt collar, but Im not sure how big of a headache that will be to sync latter if i do this many times in a day, or different locations. Video is so much easier tha audio. Depressing how much research Im doing and still not any more sure than I was when i started to look into this.
I hear you, trying to get good audio and good video with loads of angles can be a real pain. Syncing especially. The easiest would be Timecode on all cameras… but sadly that's not really an option at this time at least (or if you do want to have it, it's expensive). I hope you find the best solution which works for you soon.
YesI agree totally an inconvenience, yesterday I charged it with the media mode on and it shut off and froze had to remove the battery. First time this happens.
That’s gotta be one of the most annoying test quotes I have ever heard repeated over and over again. But besides that the media mod sounds like it makes no difference on its own and I’m surprised and disappointed.
