I've been an avid follower of Corridor, Sam and Niko, And Smarter Every Day. Dustin when I watched your video on the rolling shutter effect I instantly thought of how Wren could somehow produce something excellent with it. I also follow Kurzgesagt and their most recent video on Emergence describes exactly this scenario of emerging properties arising from multiple systems coming together, such as: cells make organs, organs make people, people create societies and nations. Dustin and wren share a creative medium, science and film come together, A new form of filmography is CREATED. Wren, you know you're just as intelligent and creative as Dustin right? would be very challenging due to tork and design. Probably would have to do low speed with much speeding up in post. In current setup, your field of view is a plane, thus horizon shifting. when you face the camera forward with it roating around an axis, your field of view becomes an empty cylinder. if you can imagine it, great. If you can't, it's usually a thing u got or not. mum ain't got it at all. can't imagine a room with different furniture.

Ahmet Can - Don't shoot down an idea. This is what experimenting is all about. You can speculate all those negative things, but you don't know for sure what the result will be. Some of the best ideas originate from unexpected results from previous experiments. Just as Wren got this idea from the results of the arrow video.

I think speeding up the footage won't actually work whereas the other ways you namend should do it perfectly fine.

The buildings bending over? They kinda did, except the camera would have to be looking at the side of the building (the movie captures it looking at it from the front) and the car wheel would have to be still.

while the speed limit is not an issue it would be illegal to tape a gopro to the tire for sure and recording in public can be tricky too

@@robin6705 as I wrote - it's tricky. It is fine if you are alone on the road. But if another car comes by you are not allowed to record without their consent. E.g. if you just activate a dashcam to record a reckless driver and report him to the police you probably will have to pay a fine yourself, because only the police is allowed to record these cases.

@@empiter3359 first of all, you can film in public whatever you want, except when expressively forbidden in that area. In Europe, only for *the published footage* that allows one to *identify people* requires you to have their, or theirs legal guardian, consent. Second, I am pretty sure you are allowed to film your rides with a dashcam in Germany.

A DC motor / speed controller may not be precise enough though and would drift over time anyway.

The effect was awesome at the end when they doubled the speed of the footage to match up better. I'd like to see a Corridor video using that technique in a more refined version. It'd be sweet!

If you've ever seen How Ridiculous, they're guys that build things and drop them from a tower. They've worked with Mark Rober before. Anyway, they use an Insta360 One X on the end of a fishing line, releasing the retention on the reel and letting the camera drop at the acceleration of gravity next to whatever they're dropping. I presume someone manually tracks through the footage to keep it framed on the object, because the camera tends to spin a lot on the way down. The footage is still very usable, I can't imagine it spins more than 300RPM, but the footage just degrades exponentially with the faster it spins. I imagine there is a point where a stroboscopic effect would take place like the one depicted here, but when you think about it you're not just dealing with the rolling shutter from one sensor, you're dealing with two sensors and software-based stitching of the two images together. Nonetheless if I end up purchasing an Insta360 One R I will for sure test your idea.

in fact you are absolutly wrong, it's not the framerate that need to be matched, it's the shutter speed. those are two different things, and on the gopro5 you can't control the shutterspeed, it always scan the image from top to bottom at the fastest speed posible. but the frame rate is just the number of scan per second, and you don't need to match that, you need to match the scan speed, so that the tire does on full revolution before the scan finishes. sorry for my bad english, i hope i was clear enouth

Lol i think Wren meant to say "wheel." Rim is slang for wheel. A tire is the rubber thing that separates the car from the ground. The wheel is the actual frame that the wheel mounts onto.

would get the same result at a slower speed but lower quality. Honestly the best way to do a shot like this would be to create some sort of fixture that spins the gopro at around 1800 rpm and shoot at 60 fps and mount it to the car, drive a normal speed, and the result when sped up should be the same as the end of this video but with higher quality, i'd say using a better camera as well but who the hell would strap something like that to a plate spinning at 1800 rpm x-x pretty useless outside of maybe simulating a black hole or some sort of sci fi distortion effect but a really cool shot to try nonetheless.

I could see that , like a large high rpm drill you could make a custom bit (perhaps 3d printed) that would be attached to the housing of a go pro. I think it would be easier also with a session because the weight would be more even. Also I have a really cool idea that this could work for.

only if your camera can't handle the frame rate you're shooting at, or has a particularly terrible sensor in it causing a lot of blurring. the reason you want a higher frame rate is to smooth the image out, more pictures makes the spinning less choppy and janky, and most importantly less blurry. the more pictures as it goes in a circle the more of that circle you capture, and then if you slow that down by say half or even 4x the image you are left with (provided you have good equipment, a good rig to spin your camera, and good lighting) should be a better image. That being said i am by no means an expert in spinning cameras around like a madman so i am no more educated about this than anyone else and have no base of knowledge for this besides my general knowledge of how cameras work and having worked with a lot of very nice ones, so take what i'm sayin with a grain of salt :P and maybe one day the lovely people at corridor will lend their red to an experiment involving hing velocity slow mo camera spinning.

BokGaming Considering that tires are balanced very precisely (down to a 1/4 of an ounce) having over 2.6 ounces (weight of hero session) of weight not counter balanced will probably throw the GoPro off the tire.

1Closed .... yeah no. Light being torn apart? You don’t have a lot of knowledge about the nature of photons do you? Perhaps it’s possible to simulate that look due to the biology of our eyes but there’s no way that a spinning black hole will cause an effect like that on light. At most it will increase it redshift or something like that.

Also the gopro isn’t tearing anything, the time between when it starts and ends a frame the time is long enough that the camera orientation has changed and also the image has changed during the entire length of the frame capture that things will start to look bent and distorted. So the whole frame is now a still image capturing a certain part of the picture and another still image in another part of the frame. Go watch Smarter Everyday’s video it will explain it to you.
