Great summary. I have seen great saves, great headers and great passes before. But Jairzinho’s turn and cross at pace at the byline, never seen that. And, all together, as you say, perfect beautiful game.

@André Luís Just look at what Banks had to do. The header was a bullet header, put on a plate by Jairzinho for Pele. It had already beaten Banks (as in the ball was behind him). Gordon had to dive down and swing his arm behind him in order to make contact with the ball. Somehow, Heaven knows how, he managed to get to the ball and not only that, scooped it up providing enough strength to scoop it up and over the crossbar. I was an 8 year bold at the time. I remember it like it was yesterday. What a save!

André Luís really? You’ve won five word cups? That’s quite an impressive achievement- considering no one has ever heard of you. You must be an incredible footballer. On a comment wishing a dead football player ‘Rest in Peace’, that’s the comment you’ve chosen to go with? You’re a real class act champ, a real prince among men. Seven seconds of magic football. The perfect 50 yard ball inside the full back from Carlos Alberto to release Jairzinho, the touch inside to the endline and the cross on the stretch from Jairzinho (you can see the ball bouncing off the surface before he plays that cross which makes it even more impressive that he hangs it up to the back post so perfectly), the bullet downward header from Pele... and still all that is beaten by the phenomenal footwork, reaction, spring, agility, athleticism and 'handiwork' of Gordon Banks to keep it out. A beautiful moment in football history.

I'm Brazillian, was nine years old then. I did not understand the adults running at the streets to see the games of Brazillian team. I have just seen the last game, against Italy. After this, and have testified the completely crazy street celebrations around my neighborhood, I became interested in football. As a native from Rio, my idols were not Pele (from Sao Paulo State) or Tostao (from Minas Gerais State), but Jairzinho and the Brazllian goalkepper, Felix - not even close to the talent of Gordon Banks, now I know. But I was just a child then. In my opinion, Gordon Banks was in the same level of Sepp Maier. The only two I put in the highest level of the best goalkeepers of all times. Sometimes, I watch (again and again) the goals Pele has lost in the 70's World Cup. Many of them were really artistic masterpieces and many Brazillians of my generation use to worship these plays. Possibly, these lost goals were not so remembered if Pele has had success on them.
@colmfolan9397
@colmfolan9397 Месяц назад
I read your comment, the game has changed alot Brazil are always the true artists of football.... Germany and Italy much more efficient but no less great..... but u can never match the Brazilian flair particularly before the age of Internet when the world cup was the only platform to see the different styles created by their unique cultures. I don't think we will see Brazil reach that level of quality again. This save best player in the world vs. Best keeper. (So sad Banks missed the 1970 QF against Germany)

Just watched this footage yet again about 50 times. At 29 seconds Jairzinho's cross, then at 30 seconds Pele's bullet header, and at 31 seconds Bank's tips it up over the bar. Note where Bank's feet are at 29 seconds when Jairzinho's strikes the ball. He moves his weight onto his left foot which is now parallel to the goalpost nearest Jairzinho. He immediately springs off across the goal but he doesn't just throw himself across the goal. Check his footwork. It's absolutely amazing. So fast. In less than one second he's almost across the goal but doesn't know which direction Pele's header is going yet. This footage never loses it's power to thrill. Majestic. Oh, and I'll throw in the commentators then were so much more passionate. The beautiful game!

I am Brazilian and this match reminds me the quality our soccer once had. In that match we lined up Jair, Gerson( the bald head "golden left foot") Tostão( the" white Pele", according to Brazilian press at that time), Pele and Rivelino ( the "atomic kicker"). World cup soccer has changed a lot. In the recent World Cup is has been clearly established that from now on matches will be decided by corner and foul kicks, ball raised upon the box, for tall men ( not at all like Pele, unfortunately) , usually defenders turned into forwards, to score headers. Instead of long range passes like those from Gerson and Tostão, very fast and tall men will break from midfield racing towards the opposite box. The 1970 Brazilian team is then part of history. May be its more brilliant part.

@@johnmoore9862 I remember most of that World Cup, John, watching as an 8 year old in Ireland as I was. England truly had a great team. If you look at their build-up play they were very very good and were perhaps deserving of at least a draw on the night. Then came the 'hundred miles an hour football' which killed the English game for a good 40 years after 1970. When you think of all the great England players who were shown scant regard along the way - Stan Bowles, Tony Currie, Rodney Marsh, Frank Worthington, Duncan McKenzie, Alan Hudson. There was no accounting for talent after 1970 - England changed direction completely, but that 1970 team was one for the ages.

We can't really appreciate the magnitude of this save because technically, the video is poor by today's standards. I have seen quite a few stunners over the years but to have cleanly scooped up the ball that was virtually on the goal-line and driven downward at incredible pace shows the hair-trigger reflexes that made Gordon Banks the incomparable keeper he was. There have been a handful of other keepers in the last 60 or so years who were head and shoulders above their peers but I think Banks remains in a league by himself.

R Crompton I believe you sum it up very nicely. In fact I just posted a few minutes ago, not having seen your post, and uncannily said almost the same as what you said. Banks had to scoop the ball, which was beneath him and behind him, off the goal line. It was a remarkable save. There have been a multitude of great goalkeepers in the last half century, but this was the best save I ever remember.

What makes the save significant is the altitude I believe 6000feet the airs thinner so the ball moves faster. And the temperature +30 and the ground like rock ..so when Banks makes the save its even more phenomenal given the ball hitting the ground and absolutely flying off it plus from the head of Pele no wonder he raised his arms in premature celebration … Truly Amazing.

Fantastic goalkeeper! I was ten and followed the match on radio. It was so dramatic! And then when I could see it for the first time I understood the reason. From the beginning to the end a beautiful action. Be in peace Mr. Gordon!

Go to settings and play at slow speed. it gives you time to see that Banks was at his near post before making it across goal, and I'd never noticed Pele raising his arms in celebration.

The whole World thought that it was in. Even Banks thought that he had only managed to help it in under the crossbar. A great save, a great player, but most of all a great man and human being. RIP Gordon. Legend.

The pictures show how he dived backwards and down and with the ball accelerating after violently bouncing on the grass he was able to push it over the bar. Just read how many words I had to use to describe the save and you realize what we're talking about. SIMPLY THE SAVE OF THE CENTURY ! RIP great Gordon. From an italian soccer fan.

Came here after last night's Turkiye’s Mert Gunok saving the Austria's last minute shoot. The Austria's national team coach referred Turkish goalkeeper as Gordon Banks. Amazing work.

I saw a photograph once, taken by Neville Chadwick photographers (Leicester) at Filbert Street during the mid-60’s and it features Gordon and David Gibson. The caption reads “Will we ever see their like again?” R.I.P Gordon Banks. The greatest ever England goalkeeper and quite probably the best-ever ‘keeper of all time.

The moment when Pele met the only man in the world who could match him, Gordon Banks. Two Titans. My favourite moment in all football.
