It’s unnecessary. I mean, season pasta water with salt? That’s not gonna add flavor, it’s just gonna make the pasta taste like salt. But Americans do love salty food. I don’t season my pasta water, and on the rare occasions I do I go all out, a little pink Himalayan sea salt with some spices and herbs, after I strain the pasta i toss it in the olive oil to keep the noodles from sticking. I’ve made it for friends and families both ways, they’ve never noticed the difference. The pasta is covered in a homemade thick, rich, ragu of spaghetti sauce; how are you gonna be able to tell if the noodles were cooked in some damn salt or not?

I mean, “kim kardashian cooking” that doesn’t even make sense, and if anything, kim kardashian would be thd type of person to salt food aggressively rather than not use salt at all. And Gordon Ramsey may not be American, but he’s pretty much the next closest thing to it. I mean, “season pasta water with salt,” how much fucking salt do people need in their food? Again though, we live in a world of McDonalds and processed foods. Bags of chips and food from a can has become common place. I imagine that today we consume 4 times as much salt as we did 100 years ago, if not more. Talk to people who cook traditional, ethnic foods and they will tell you that salt is typically a go-to for amateurs who need to give their dish a flavor-boost or cover-up something that wasn’t seasoned properly.

@@KlvtchTheAlien no, oil causes pasta to repell sauces as most sauces are water based. Oil doesn't mix well with water. Thus sauces will just roll off the pasta. What you should do instead is constantly stir your pasta in salted water. It should smell sea salty. Thandraining water 2 minutes before aldente reserving at least a cup of pasta water and than finish the pasta in your sauce thinning as needed with reserved pasta water. The oil just makes everything fool proof and nearly impossible to screw up which is likely why it's done here as it is a "industrial" setting.

People who call Ramsay arrogant have never ran a dinner service with a full house before. Sh*t is brutal. You have 10+ tables all ordering different food, some with different pecularities, all expects it fast and worth their money. Meanwhile you have to cook over 50 dishes as fast as you can and a lot of them must be served together. Any dish that's not of sufficient quality means the whole table's food must be tossed because you can't send a cold dish to the customer. You're haemorrhaging money just by not being on time

Hella late to the party but the only thing I could think of the oil doing is help the noodles not stick to each other as easily. I cook for a living and have never really thought about putting oil in myself. I've done butter so the noodles could absorb some of the butter while cooking but thats about it. Salt always goes in the water when boiling, of course.
