Always a fun day for the gorillas when they have their checkups. In the old days when they weren't required to be separated from the staff by bars it was a real party atmosphere. They would queue up to have their tests and when they were done some would run to the back of the queue again to have another test. They all knew how to stand or sit to get their various measurements taken it was an enjoyable day for all. But this was quite some time ago and things are very different today.

I love watching these health checks with the gorillas. They did one once with the Momotaro family, and Kintaro was so cute. He'd lift one arm, get his treat, and then turn around for them to check the other one. Gorillas may be food motivated, but they are smart.
It's sad gorillas have to be protected from criminals in Africa. Those people are the ones committing the crimes, but the good people here are making sure those crimes are NEVER committed against these gorillas! They're safe from poachers, deforestation, farmers, lack of resources, and the disgusting illegal pet trade. Shabani's troop has a wonderful enclosure inside and out. They're very well taken care of, healthy, safe, and above all, their population is growing and thriving once again! In the wild (People's Republic of Congo), even though Mountain gorillas are in a protected area, poachers still come in, shooting the soldiers that work so hard, beating and raping the female caretakers. And although the Mountain gorilla's population is up bc of these dedicated people, the gorillas are having to climb to even higher altitudes to find food and protection. Shabani's troop and others in parks, sanctuaries, and zoos, will never, ever have to endure such violence. That's the best we can do right now. These people should be applauded and well-funded, honestly. ❤

@@kris7969-k7y I have a fantasy where I think it would work to make their lives better: Rohypnol all the Gorillas ( a certain controlled amount in their water, when they are separated off one by one from the group and when they fall asleep, put them into a one day Fentanyl induced coma( quite harmless and you wake up feeling fine) to prevent the stress of flying them all out to a different Gorilla Zoo. For instance, Silverback Motomaro and his Gorilla Troop switches living space with Silverback Shabani and his group. This would be enrichment for them, as everything is new and exciting for them. They’d be a little puzzled at first, but they’d all be together, so they would settle in quickly, I bet.
