Hey I get the same feeling with Kendrick Lamar, I’m still trying so hard to find that spark that gets me into his music, I respect him and his music and I can see why people love him a lot but I still haven’t been able to get into him the way that I got into Gorillaz, even tho this album didn’t hit me immediately it definitely grew on me to be my favorite album probably ever, but I guess sometimes you can’t really connect with an artists music as much as you try to and you gotta respect the possibility that it’s just not for you.

I think what makes it a classic is the quality of the album and how the theme has stayed so relevant, but I feel you. I was 19.
@orangedalmatian
@orangedalmatian 3 года назад
as far as classics go this album is very young. Generally an album has to be at least a generation old (20-ish years) before it can be considered classic, as that's usually enough time for people to retrospectively see how much it has influenced and inspired artists that followed and whether it's retained much relevancy after originally seeping into the cultural consciousness. Not to say an album HAS to be popular and influential to be a masterpiece, but the term classic just has different connotations. This album, along with other rare exceptions (the first one to jump to my mind is something like TPAB or In The Aeroplane or MBDTF) have the uncanny ability to very rapidly cause a shift and stick around past the point of average trends. Not a literal 'Instant Classic' but yeah.

"On Empire Ants, in just under five minutes, Gorillaz create an immersive symphony. The first movement is one of ice; of ghostly keyboards that brush feather light atop a glistening, tonal space of bright ambience. "The polyphonic prairies here, it's all around you," sings Albarn, his voice floating high above the flawless sheen of glass-like stillness. Suddenly, a shift, a second movement appears far in the distance, a descending line of pointed synth begins to emerge, flying closer as each second passes. The stillness subsides and it becomes our sole point of focus, becoming more earnest with each refrain. Like a wave, the beat crashes overall, bathing the world in warm, dulcet energy, all while Little Dragon soothe the change in pace with words not meant to be fully understood. In short, this is electro as high art." Read this in a Gorillaz ranking article and thought it was worth sharing.

As much of a good album it is, I think calling it a concept album "..so far ahead of its time." is too much of a praise honestly. The album itself never revolved upon the established story or having a central narrative of its own, just a loose concept with interrelated themes in each song not unlike plenty other albums, such as Radiohead's OK Computer and Kid A for example. It's barely going on the same scope as The Who's Tommy and Quadrophenia, or even Pink Floyd's "mother of concept album" The Wall (though can't deny they still put a tremendous efforts on the plotline and the animation) Nevertheless, it still not detracting it from being an amazing album😃 Edit: word choice error.

The theme of the music, the story and design of the accompanying material, it all means so much to be and hit me when i was a teen so really shaped how i view the world in a way. I feel like this album fits better almost in todays market than it did back in 2010, and im so glad that people are giving it a relisten with new appreciation, or finding it through the youtube algorithm etc Empire Ants especially has gone through a resurgence in popularity and has been remixed countless times on all those 'homework radio 24/7' streams. In 2010, Plastic Beach felt like a subtle warning of what is to come In 2021, relistening to Plastic Beach feels like a slap in the face for not heeding the warning, with all that has happened since

Plastic Beach is the album that first got me into Gorillaz after hearing Rhinestone Eyes on the Fifa 11 soundtrack, and I still have a soft spot for it after nearly a decade. I also have to commend it for probably introducing me to the likes of Mos Def and Lou Reed, who have become some of my favourite artists. Huge nostalgia every time I listen to it.

Gorillaz are amazing at incorporating features into their music. They manage to craft entire songs around the artists while also keeping the unique Gorillaz sound. Also the way they make the most unlikely pairings of features sound perfect together (Pink Phantom and MLS) is remarkable.

I know it can be difficult to enjoy an italian music album, but I'm sure you're gonna love them because they're really international. I'm suggesting you two of their albums which are "Il Suicidio Dei Samurai" and "WOW"; the first one is from 2004, it's the album that made them so popular in Italy. The second one is from 2011 and it's considered one of the best rock album ever made. I know you're gonna love them. You should also read the lyrics, and if the translations you find online are not the best, I would be glad to translate some songs for you! Just give it a try!

As somebody who (even to this day) absolutely LOVES Gorillaz’s first two albums, I remember having mixed feelings and feeling somewhat disappointed when this album was released because it was a completely different direction to what we all knew of the band at the time and loved. I did remember loving the Snoop Dogg feature specifically though. I was about 14 years old when this album was released so I was going through my edgy emo teen phase at the time, and even back then, music, life, society was way different to how it is today. However, over the last decade - as my music taste has matured during that time, I feel this album has aged like fine wine and honestly I wish I had given this album more of a chance back in the day because it is just bloody fantastic. This album is definitely on my list of top albums by Gorillaz. Isn’t it funny how music can do that to you? Thanks for re-reviewing this!

Plastic Beach is one of the best albums that showcases transportive music and immerses you-through music, through the soundscaping, and nuances in language-in it’s atmosphere. I used to think the orchestral intro was unneeded and although it was a pretty piece of music it sounded too frumpy. But as I’ve listened to it more and more I can’t imagine not hearing the full album without the intro-truly it takes me to Plastic Beach and is the piece of music that puts me in the right headspace for the rest of it. Max Max for real. I’m surprised he hasn’t at least made a video on Mista Thug Isolation yet. For some reason I was legit half-expecting him to consider it a classic or something at this point lol

Glitter Freeze is such an incredible track to me. It's the perfect transition from the first half of the album to the latter half. The simplicity of the song makes it feel like a regular electronic dance banger, but I think the repetitiveness and uneasiness of the track at the end encapsulate the concept of the album. Really wish you liked that track more, Anthony. Then maybe Gorillaz could have gotten a 10 😳

The OG review is the first thing I remember seeing from you when it came out. I wished more people were talking about Plastic Beach and there was this guy claiming to be the Internet's busiest music nerd with the only video review I could find at the time. I've been a fan since! Great to see this album get the love I've felt it deserves

Definitely my favorite album of 2010, I remember when it came out. I was a senior in highschool. First year I smoked weed too, the title track was my jam, still is.

I have _Plastic Beach_ on vinyl and I am certainly pleased to have it on CD and digitally as well. Just a great album all around! If there were a cassette pressing I likely would've gotten that, too.

love this redux. yes this album aged SO SO well. even going back to their first album, i feel this opened so many doors for "new listeners", like kids who first saw gorillaz as a cartoony band, and then when growing up they found in plastic beach a greater pallette of sounds. sounds that sound very good to this day. this album was, and still is great. for me, is the best work of gorillaz. and in my all time spotify songs "some kind of nature" ranks top 5.

That’s strange that you re reviewed this because I just got this on vinyl a few days ago and I can’t stop listening to it. I love the meaningfully and sometimes dark themes over this amazing production. It’s definitely one of my favorites right now.

I was exactly the same, a couple years back the lyrics to "plastic beach" just got stuck in my head and on a revisit of the album I appreciate it so much more than I did originally, I feel as though that is the way my most loved music ends up becoming my favorite, by growing on me; visa versa also, some of the tracks/albums I loved originally tend to run out of steam and be forgotten years down the track remembered only in passing as something "just pretty good" as opposed to "amazing/close to if not perfect".

Plastic Beach was that album that I always kinda just respected. Then as time went on, I began to love it more and more. Now it’s not just my favorite Gorillaz album, but my favorite album of all time.
