Hans tells today about the visit of a young hawk earlier this week (Ed. week 33, 2021). In addition to the tawny owl that can regularly be followed LIVE at night during its hunt at the feeding spot, we now have a new hunter.
A hawk is a typical forest bird, but also hunts in (semi) open landscape. Hawks prefer varied landscapes with a lot of cover, where forests and open plains alternate because their surprise attack technique works best there. Hunts low above the ground, trying to catch prey by surprise. Hawks also try to catch prey from a thrust dive. Due to the high speed, this tactic is mainly used in open terrain. Hawks mainly prey on birds (from tits to pheasants), with the female catching larger species. Hawks also catch other birds of prey and owls.

During the tawny owl breeding season I stream LIVE from De Mortel. For several years in a row, a tawny owl pair has chosen one of the two breeding boxes as a nest in De Mortel. The live stream will switch to the owl box after the tawny owl pair has chosen. The livestream includes audio!
