I spent ages (and i do mean MONTHS) trying to get High Frame Rates working on my GH6!
I managed to get slow motion from use of 'Variable Frame Rate' VFR but that cut out the sound. So i wanted to uncover the 'HFR' - High Frame Rate setting. Spoiler.... There isn't one!
What there is though is a set of Recording Qualities that have really high Frame Per Second values that can be slowed down in post processing.
This video goes into what i have found and how to achieve HFR recording!
1. Use a High Speed memory card - Compact Flash. I use this:

2. Turn off Dynamic Range Boost.
3. Set the 'System Frequency' to 59.94 'NTSC'
4. Set record mode to '.Mov'

If Dynamic Range boost is On, I found that it limits your VFR to 60FPS. All of them. Thanks for the Video. Problem solved :)

Hey Lance, I hope this helped. Tbh, I got really frustrated that there was so little info on HFR. I really expected there to be a HFR setting in the same way as VFR. My next challenge is to get the best out of GH6 auto focus. This is what’s currently driving me up the wall! Rich ;o )

Dude, no worries. It did my head in trying to find how to do this. So decided one weekend to knuckle down n read the manual over and over. 100’s of pages later I found it! good video! also, took me YEARS on the GH5 to figure out that you get different settings / options depending on whether you choose Cinema mode, or PAL or NTSC! I wish this stuff was made more clear by Panasonic! NTCS vs Cinema Mode also affects time lapse settings on GH5mk1. Not sure what the case is with GH6.

Hey Just Alex, couldn’t agree more! I expected to find an ‘HFR’ mode; in the same way you have ‘VFR’. Only when you get to page 420 in the manual that things come together. Interesting question on NTSC vs Cinema? Maybe a future video there! ;o )

Hello, since I upload videos to YR'T and YT processes it better with 30fps instead of 25fps, I edit my 4K/120fps or my Full-HD/300fps in a 4K/30fps project! Since I not only film with the GH6, but also film drone shots in 4K/60fps, I have another problem and that is the 17:9 format and these shots then cause black borders at the top and bottom of a 16:9 project. If you turn it around so that you adjust 16:9 to 17:9, it gets even worse, because then you have black bars on the left/right! To prevent this, I have to film with ULHD/Full-HD when I process them together with the drone recordings. I only noticed the problem after our first trip to Chiemsee/Lake Constance with the GH6, but how and what I conjured up with the GH6, especially slow motion 120fps and 300fps in the first three parts, which is the first time using a camera with interchangeable lenses will amaze everyone. The recordings that inspire me the most are the recordings of the mighty, imposing fountain on the island of Herrenchiemsee with 300 fps, but also waterfalls, birds of prey and even a water strider that is startled by a dragonfly and jumps high can be seen in the first three parts 300 fps slow motion . Sometimes you could almost think that it's not Full HD but 4K. Hey Stanley, my ND is quite old now but has worked well for my use case. Do bear in mind it does have vignette at corners but on the whole was great value for money. I use the Marumi ND2-ND400 variable filter. It does mean you have to be a little careful with the frame rate/ISO combinations but has great flexibility. I use it predominantly on my Olympus 12-40 F2.8 Pro which is a 52mm ring size. However, If I were buying today I would go larger diameter and use a lense ring expander set to fit it. That way you have way more options for more lenses in future. Lense ring expanders are cheap. ND filters, especially good ones are expensive. If you have the money, do have a look at the Peter McKinnon ND's. Top notch, but top dollar too! Happy Hunting. Rich ;o )

Hey I stumbled on your video looking up the GH6 specs. According to the Panasonic website (which I assume now relates the latest firmware v2.2) if you set your System Frequency to Cinema (24hz) you can record MOV C4k/4K at 120.00p exactly, giving you the missing 0.12 fps 😀From what I can tell the System frequency looks like its related to the HDMI output frequency for playback directly on your TV. NTSC mode gives you the largest range of recording options though e.g 1080p 239.76p

With PAL mode active, the high frame rate should land on 100 fps instead of 120 fps, right?

Hey François, yes exactly. The HFR max frame rate is 100fps when PAL (System Frequency 50Hz) has been selected. Which itself allows you to slow back down to 25fps. 400% slow is cool. But I wanted to find that max 120p which is only available in NTSC.

may I ask what is shutter speed at? because the maxed out of the shutter speed on the gh6 video mode is 355? I always seen that the shutter speed should be doubled the frame rate. Would you be able to let me know?

Hey LR, I am a bit lazy that way just using the 180 rule. Saves the faf and one more thing to setup. So I set the shutter to 180deg which automatically returns double the frame rate. So in the 120 example gets 240 shutter. Cheers Rich ;o )

Hey Claes, I have tried to find out more about the sensor and the processor to see if this gives any clues, but nothing!?! There is no explanation that I can find yet? My hypothesis: the processor/codec has a far easier calculation to process between 59.94 and 119.88p than 50/120. So the frequency derives a theoretical max frame rate of Freq x 2. Where as Variable frame rate turn off certain aspects to minimise impact on processor. Blooming good question though, so I’ll keep digging! Rich

Thanks Rick for that. I know how you feel. I've been struggling with my lovely new GH6 downloading onto my Mac. I filmed in the Variable Frame Rate slow motion and my Mac/QuickTime/iPhoto/iMovie just won't open them. Any tips? I was wondering if it would open with the higher frame rate?

Hey D, when you say ‘won’t open them’ does that mean your trying to open them in Finder and the mac just takes ages or are the files? What is the file extension type, I.e the bit after the dot? Panasonic have some proprietary file types they require a converter to import them. There are a bunch of clever folks that read and comment here so hopefully one of the others can help out with other suggestions too! If it helps, I mapping out an idea I’m working on to cover data volumes and SD card options. Bit of a techie one but may give some ideas. Cheers Rich ;o )

@@ItsAdventure Hi Rick, the problem was Quick Player, but somehow I've sorted it. It doesn't take the I setting only the L setting whatever that means on the variable frame rate setting. Anyway, just managed to follow your instructions on the HFR and it worked. The only thing is is the sound is slowed down as well. Can you give me advice on the sound. Most grateful. @@buddhalochanna hey D, glad you got it sorted! No, I’m not a teacher. I run an it consultancy advising companies on IT systems and helping them by running the project teams during their implementation. There are a couple of ways to get slow video and regular sound; 1. Duplicate the video, use one copy for the slow speed visuals and the other (sped up) to get the sound. 2, use an external audio recorder and bring that in as a separate track. Takes a bit of practice, but gets the job done. Thanks Rich ;o )

@@buddhalochanna hey D, for me, sound is the critical element. In fact I can get away with a dodgy image if the sound is decent quality. So to portray and emphasise time slowing down I like to hear the abnormality of an every day sound being stretched. I like my sound to match and eventuate the image. My new camera for example, records no sound at all when I change the frame rate. This to me is incredibly frustrating and forced me to have external recording. But, the image quality balances things out. Cheers Rich ;o )

You're both right, kinda... He was talking about getting ALL of the HFR options to appear, you would need CFexpress. It all comes down to how high of bitrate the option is... You are correct that there are a couple options (HD only I believe) that would work with SD.

Hey Albert. Recording at the high frame rate 119.88p in 4K means you can slow the footage in post by setting the playback speed to 29.97fps. In FCPx this is equivalent of slow 400%. Your play back will appear way slower, you won’t get dropped frames (juddering) and added bonus:you will hear the audio too. Hope that helps. Btw, that question has really made me think I need to expand more on outcome/benefits of HFR! So thanks for the idea there. Rich ;o )

I shoot an R5 and i have a chronos, my market isnt willing to pay extra for slow motion and i dont think 120fps on my r5 gets it done for me alone plus more light investment for the chronos and having to match the footage with my r5 if i were to use one camera and sell them off for the gh6 at 300fps what advice can you give?

@@Lordalbertreels hey Albert. The problem with colour matching across camera brands is that each tend to develop their own ‘Brand’ colour preferences. So a Rec709 LUT from Cannon will produce nominally different colours from a Panasonic Rec709 LUT. I use an XRite colour checker after applying a Rec709 LUT to balance between cameras. Better still would be to look at Node processing inside of Davinci Resolve (free software). Then see if you can build out your own Nodes based on your own ‘input’ camera and ‘output’ taste and preferences. And yes, higher frame rates are more light hungry! Cheers Rich ;o )

Interesting enough off the subject other than i own a gh6 .i had unlimited recording of 4k119mov and 5.7k30prores on an Angelbird 4Tb CfExpress until i updated to the 2.0 firmware that now shows (cfexpress exceeds 2tb) so now exclusive recording external w/o internal storage to 4tb ssd. Thank you

Funny you mention Angelbird CF cards. Gene Nagata (PotatoJet) recommended the same card. They are about a quarter of the price of SanDisk. That is gutting to get that much of a drop. Mind you, must help yer HDD out! Rich. ;o )

Been a while and still learning this beast🎉All my cards are angel bird. Since the update of course i can use 4tb ssd external and now run and gun w 2tb cf express angelbird. They have 2 different speeds and the cheaper one is slower but handles everything i throw at it. Just seen your reply when i referenced your vid again for settings. Thanks again

Hey Scopeshots3123, the frame is by Smallrig. I have one for the GH5 and one for the GH6. The top handle (called ‘Top Handle’) locks onto a small NATO rail. The top handle has a Usbc lead that allows you to start/stop recording. Smallrig have their Blackfriday sale on this weekend. So probs worth a look. Cheers Rich ;o )

Hey BoxingTunes. Thank you for highlighting this for everyone! There were a couple of reasons I went this route: This firmware update for Pal 200p wasn’t available back when I made the vid. Also, AF not available above 120p. Don’t quote me, but think you also loose sound with PAL (I’ll test this). Cool that you were able to bring this to people’s attention though. The more we can share tips/questions like yours, the better informed all of us will be. Many thanks Rich ;o )

@@ItsAdventure Sorry my bad, I didn't realise 200p was made available after a firmware upgrade. You don't lose sound with 200p. I shoot mainly boxing and was previously having to shoot in slow mo and sound externally then sync them up in post so I had the option of smooth slow-mo but also had entire bouts with sound. It's made life a lot easier. I never shoot with AF as I use mainly Canon EF lenses so thanks for clarifying. In my experience I've had too many problems recording NTSC as you can get a lot of problems with light flicker being in Europe so Its PAL or 24hz for me only.

@@BoxingTunes I mainly use Olympus lenses. my favourite for the GH6 is the Olympus 17mm f1.2. As most of my stuff is vlog style I needed good reliable autofocus. I got that hacked off with Panasonic missing focus that I recently moved over to Sony full frame with ZV-E1. Managed to get a couple of lenses on eBay. The Panasonics are still my preference if I’m behind the camera as they have superior image stability and I love the colour. But for focus reliability and for compact size, the ZV-E1 wins for my kind of filming. ;o )

Before even wathing you video I have to gife feedback. Had my speaker settings to very loud without knowind and when playing your video I jumped. Very crazy annoying starting sound in this video. Sorry I just wanted to give feedback. Maybe you lower that sound in the beginning.

Hey BikeMike, thanks for your thoughts. And that is exactly what I had to do to uncover these features on page 420+. My hope is that this video helps those that don’t have the time to do the research to know what to search for. We’re all busy people, so sharing knowledge in an easily convenient format is going to help everyone get there faster. At least that’s how I see it.
