Got A School Bus For A Camper! 

I drove a school bus for a couple of years! I would love to fix one up. You could name the bus The Hunker Bunker!!

I love how the dude who sold you the bus is a fan of the channel and discussed previous episodes.

I dont think I can think of a better name than Hunker Downey Jr. That's got my vote

You could convert that into a van life dream. A hotel room on wheels. They even put showers in those. Bed in the back, kitchen and bathroom in the front. Boom. It will take alot of work over time but it could be a nice van life travelling vehicle one day.

I've never been so happy to watch a guy drive to Lac La Biche to pick up an old bus.

Got a 1979 ward School bus standard. Converted it into a complete hunting trailer with all the trimmings lasted us about 10 years with a lot of good times but the rust and rot really gets to you specially when you're trying to do a valve job in the middle of the woods because the bus is so damn old good luck with it I'm here with plenty of suggestions and assistance if you need it

I remember seeing a bus in the early 70's being used for the same purpose. They painted over the "S H" and it was named " C OOL BUS"

If step 2 is enjoying a cold one after setting up shelter, you should name the bus Step 1.

Looks like you got a good bus! I was sure by the sound it was a International 466 engine but that derated 6.0 will be just fine as long as your kind to it. Recreational diesel mechanic here. Also that is probably a 300 amp alternator, which can easily support charging a lithium iron phosphate battery pack if you don't want to be bothered with solar. Best thing about it being a diesel is you can add a heater for the whole bus in an afternoon for less then $200 and pull right from the tank. If you have any battery or heater questions let me know! Glad you got a good diesel mechanic lined up. I think you will be fine, take care of it and it will take care of you.

I like how they covered up "school" but left "bus" visible. Just in case anyone wasn't sure. I also never gave a single thought to the electrical situation on these buses, but it looks pretty conducive to RVing

We had a converted bus camper like this when I was a young child. There was always something broken on it, parts falling out, etc. It took one final trip from Red Deer to northern montana, losing a starter, a wheel and all but the emergency brakes on the way. And there it rusted for a decade on my grandpa's little plot of land until he died and it was taken away for scrap. It was a nice little camper to stay in when we visited, had a propane stove, a propane fridge, a queen bed in the back and a fold-down twin bed in the front, and a porta-potty closet. Good luck with your conversion!

I agree “Step One” as the name! every where it actually is marked as “School Bus” should be labeled as “Step One”.. And please repaint as ‘flat black’ or ‘primer gray’ .. even a camo wrap would cool!

Good luck, my husband and I are building our 4th bus and we are making it our new bus a camper for 2 people. 1st just gutted it and we all just slept in it, 2nd did a sad camper! 3rd food bus which was awesome, mad money and sold her for awesome price, 4th is for the both of us!!

This rebuild is perfect content for your step 2 channel! Keep us updated on the build, and keep tabs on the cost, I think a lot of people would love seeing your schoolbus turn into the hunkbus, and know how much it costs!

My grandfather was a goldminer in Anchorage, Alaska and had a converted schoolbus that was his base camp. I would go visit him in the summers and spend some time in it, it was pretty fun. The back of the bus had a queen size bed with a privacy wall, after that there were 2 bunk beds on each size of the hall. and towards the front there was a propane stove and fridge on one side, and the table which used 2 of the bus benches across from it. Hope you have a blast with your new ride!

I did this 50 years ago with a slightly longer bus. Complete conversion with a queen bed, full bath and shower, full kitchen etc. Mounted a surplus submarine battery (about 400 lbs) underneath the chassis. Able to live with no electric for about 10 days. In 3 years full time drove all over the US, Canda, Mexico. So many adventures! It will take more time and money than you think. You'll get your first experience with that when you swap out the crap tires it has now. Please, don't go cheap on those, you'll be very sorry! And, your first step, taking out the seats; oh, it will be harder than you think! But, now matter what, you'll be able to fix or replace anything you install while you enjoy the great feeling of being self-contained with whatever level of comfort suits you! Best of luck

Steve I've found that reseating fuses in a vechile seems to help abs problems. It is helpful to reseat them all vibration seems the culprit.

If you're thinking of using it in stealth mode, maybe give it a name like "Hunker Academy - A School for Restless Youth" Make it seem like a legit school bus on the outside, but on the inside let the hunkering begin!

We got a "Yeah no", "Not the best", "That would be the ticket", "Winch, Snatch block, beauty!", "Pull your loop around and that's her", "That's a pretty fancy camera ya got here", "I put a word in with the boiz"... etc. That's just beauty English, there boiz.

You should turn one seat around and put a kitchen table in. It looks like a good investment. Have fun hunkering down in it!

For an extra way to get unstuck you could buy or make some off road ramps that you shove under the tires and should help you crawl out of the mud or snow. Can't wait to see the finished product good luck Steve!

The 6.0 isn’t truthfully a bad Diesel engine just keep up on maintenance and you’ll be good

so i was just half paying attention to this till "plamondon joe dirt" mentioned his family went from canada, to michigan, back to canada and founded the town of plamondon. My family did the same thing so i got curious. Looked up the town on wikipedia and yep, the town in michigan they came from is where i'm from. He has to be a distant cousin of one of my life long friends.

I love these old buses. You can floor it at anytime and the engine just makes more noise it doesn’t accelerate any faster 😎

Trick it out bus/camper style, get the winch, beef up the tires. Drop a floor in it, tint the windows and toss up curtains, insulate the floor. Slam a bed or two down , Pop fridge in there for your step 2s 3s 4s.

Rather than cutting out all the seats, remove the backs to the second to last seats, reverse the third to last seats and then you can lay a couple of twin mattresses down on a sheet of plywood and go camping in a king size bed . Can also do the same further up and make a dinette on one side
