As a straight, cis female, I actually find it really hard to understand all this gender stuff, but I really want to try. I never realized how absolutely diverse and crazy gender was!!! Thanks a lot, for opening my eyes Ashley. You just won a new subscriber. 😊

Genderqueer/non-binary here! This is one of the best LGBTQ+ videos I've ever seen. Great job! :D And cis folks, no need to worry if you're lost with all these overlapping and intertwining terms. It's confusing to some of us too! ;)

This was an awesome video and I'm really enjoying the series. I identified a lot more with some of the terms mentioned in this video (demigirl, gender variant ect.) Personally, I think the third gender should have a name or people should make a name for their third gender, because just calling it "other" seems to marginalise it. Not male or female? Eh, just put you down as "other". In no way do I mean people who use the term "other" are marginalising people who identify with it, just saying that they should have a "proper" word to describe themselves as. (Also, nice pun :D)

Sapphire Wright important topic, i agree! this was however a video (series) about gender identity/identities and not sexual orientations, so I think this is why it wasn't covered. ashley has probably made a video about this before? [pansexual means that you are potentially sexually attracted to people regardless of their gender identity/of any gender; "pan" is greek and means "all, any, every, the whole"]

My biological sex is female. I have always been into things that are stereotypically considered female (although that stereotype alone is stupid), like drawing, singing, learning languages, horsebackriding and sowing, but at the same time I've always wanted to be the knight and not the princess. I wanted to go hunt in the oods, slay monsters and ride dragons. I love building stuff and working with my hands and want to become a blacksmith. Some of my hobbies include hunting, fishing, survival weekends (or weeks), flint knapping and archery. I hate high heels, but love long, flowing dresses just as much as I love pants (except hot pants, ugh I HATE them!). I have long, flowing hair that always has a variety of tiny braids worked into it. I rarely put make up on (mostly because I'm too lazy), but when I do, it's only some concealer and eyeliner. I could call myself Demigirl, and I think the term is pretty cool, but honestly, I'm just ME. This whole gender thing is interesting, but I find it unnecesay that people need to put labels on everything. I don't have a problem with people who do, but please don't get worked up about it if I wrongly assume something that I have no way of knowing. Let everybody just be themselves and stop judging people for what they wear and what they do:)

@@magiv4205 Ok I know this is coming very late but gendered stereotypes is different from gender identity. Hobbies and clothes and make-up and so on are not gender, they have no gender ; the feeling of gender is different. Also please : it's very ok and valid to not want any label, but wanting or needing labels is also very ok and very valid, and you shouldn't try and tell people THEY should not use one. Don't force people to use labels and don't force people to not use labels.

Awesome video Ashley! I loved it, and the one before. Except for the part about being Two Spirit. As a First Nations person I was a little confused because that's not how we consider Two Spirit so far as anyone in my Indigenous community. Two Spirit (to me and mine at least) means someone, anyone, within the village who holds both male and female spirits within themselves. That could mean they're gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans, or demi-male/female. The idea is that there are usually two spirits -- the male and the female. What today we'd call someone who is cis-gender and straight. But in the village there were always people who had something of two spirits in them. Both the male and the female. These people weren't shunned or looked down on through (not until after 1492 at least). They were seen as integral to the village and people who held great knowlege and empathy and (for lack of a better term) "magic" in them. So long as I've been around that's all that Two Spirit means. Anyone not of the binary.

***** My education about my ancestors cultures (Aniishinabe and Ininiw) never came from the Rez either. In fact, on reserve you're more likely to find hardcore RC than anything (the Residential Schools did a really good job on us, sadly **brow furrow**). Most of my education came from decolonized story-tellers I've met here in the city. And I am so very thankful for all of them. They put words to things I've felt but haven't known what to call pretty much my whole life. *smiles* Including my gender identity (I say pan/two-spirit myself). And that is so cool that your name already speaks to it! I'm jealous.

Sometimes I think these gender identities are more like personality traits or something like that, and that most of it comes forth of the pressure our heteronormative society puts on us and I think some of these labels are pretty much unnecessary if we didn't feel the need to define all of our very personal and unique sexual and gender identities, which is why I prefer not to use any labels at all, but I do understand that some people probably feel more comfortable using them and that it's none of my business and everyone should do what makes them happy. That is probably the longest sentence I ever typed.
@dustinallen4142
@dustinallen4142 9 лет назад
Agreed. I'm a bi sexual man, who is attracted to female mostly, and trans and male. Sexuality deals with the physical attraction of sexual organs. I can not stress that enough seriously. Everything else is a non needed preference that is either concerned with what they identify as or emotional attraction. Many people will disagree but pansexual and Demisexual and anything else of that nature is not a real sexuality. It's not that their preferences are stupid it's that they are not needed because they are extra traits that to not define attracted with sexual organs. That is all sexuality is concerned with. I don't mean to offend anyone but honestly it's really just a means to feel special. That's all it is. Bi sexual covers all attraction to sexual organs. Anything is personal preferences and seriously like why do people need to define who they are by "IM DEMISEXUAL PANSEXUAL LITHOSEXUAL QUADSEXUAL FATSEXUAL BLACKSEXUAL SKINNYSEXUAL" uh no, you're a human, calm down.
@bdhesse
@bdhesse 8 лет назад
+Dustin Allen Actually, being demisexual, I can tell you it is not a preference. It isn't that I prefer to have sex with people that I have a prior relationship with, it's that I cannot physically become sexually aroused by someone unless that relationship exists. Seriously, I cannot see a picture of a random model in a magazine and become sexually aroused. For that reason, the label demisexual is quite important. Some people add another label to it, such as heterosexual, bisexual, or so on, but I don't find that to be necessary. This is because my demisexuality defines who I'm sexually attracted to. I don't care what genitalia they have. As far as I'm concerned, all genitals look funny anyway. If I have the right prior relationship, I can be sexually attracted to men, women, non-binary folks, one person, or many people. But I can't be attracted to anyone without that relationship being in place first. So yes, demisexual is a necessary label.
@Zakaldri

Can you feel attracted sexually to an actor / actress if their relationship in the filmed moved you? In the sense that movies are made for us to identify with the characters depicted, as such I'm wondering if you ever feel sexually attracted to a film character?

genderfluid seems a little under explained while everything else had a wide spread so here I go. genderfluid is a term for gender fluidly changing. this does not mean personality has to change. also you can rotate from more then just boy to girl. I rotate from bigender, agender, girl, boy. Some can rotate in many other ways. it can be everything in the whole gender non binary or the gender binary. Like I said rotation dosent have to afflict gender expression or your personality. at the same time it can. also your genders can have different mental disorders. like example. I have social anxiety with every gender but my male gender is ten times worse. My bigender has worse Depression. My agender has really bad insomnia. My girl has all of that plus she just got out of exercise bulimia. And dysforia(can't spell) is high in everything but female and agender. So genders can have different issues also petsonalitys. ex. my boy loves drag, like alot. he also is a super geeky nerd. he actually likes wearing makeup and "girls clothes" it's a bit weird but it's true. he is great with fashion but still like boy pronouns. what sucks is that is my main gender to face dysforia. since he seems more like a girl. my girl wants to be a drag king. she isn't much a fashion and make up girl. she isn't well with other girls. is a huge tomboy. but really loves geeky nerdy stuff like anime and cosplay. also loves show make up agender and bigender are my geeks too. they are also my band obsessed ones. Video gamers too. Drag is still awesome to hir (that the pronoun I use) so they are basically mixes of everything. they all really like RU-vid and film so as you can see they are different. this isn't the case for me but sexuality can also change with the genders. any questions on genderfluid cause I will be happy to answer.

Love this video, right now I'm 13, and not at all comfortable with being a girl. Before watching this video I didn't know what I want to identify myself as, I'm lost. I knew that I didn't want to label myself as trans nor non binary. But knowing more about gender identities, labels, and means to them, helps me have an open mind to what I can identify as!! I felt that identifying myself as trans, non binary, wasn't the right fit for me, so I explored. While watching the video, I didn't feel that I was comfortable with some of them. When I heard the definition of "androgyny", I felt that I just........I guess, found myself!? It felt good

I have only one thing to add: You do not have to identify as anything if you do not want to. Doesnt make you questioning or anything. As someone who is cisgender and doesn't have to personally worry about these labels, I thank you for these videos! I'd have a lot harder time understanding them if I just researched on my own. It's a lot of information but it's more 'fun' to learn about. To me it's fasinating that people can physically feel fluid or androgynous, not just have that style of clothing, or that people can even be a third gender.

I love, love, love, love this video! There are so many awesome cuties in this video, and of course Ashley's commentary is gr8! I'd also just to add that bigender and trigender identities don't necessarily have to include the binary genders. For example, someone could be bigender by identify as male and gender neutral. So long as you identify as any two genders, you could fall under bigender. =)

I keep seeing neutrois and Agender both and I'm seeing less and less that Agender is feeling neutral. It's distinctly feeling none of it- and neutrois is feeling neutral, not feeling a complete disconnect. I feel neutral. But I always have said I'm Agender. I've seen that neutrois is usually people that otherwise would be Agender, but they have gender dysphoria and need surgery in the future to feel comfortable and Agender is being able to feel comfortable without having surgery. Is that correct? Because I don't feel like I need changes to my body to feel comfortable.

Here's what i don't understand. Gender identity is not determined by biological sex. OK, I'll take it. Gender identity is not determined by gender expression. OK, I'll take it. I'm totally cool with the idea that my gender identity is independent of these two factors, but what I'm confused by is, these are the only two things that I've ever heard associated with gender identity, and if I take those away, what criteria is left for me to know what gender I am? what factors can i look at to inform me what category I fall in? I hear a lot about what gender isn't, but nothing about what it is.
@coleybaker6458
@coleybaker6458 9 лет назад
this is a good question, but a really difficult one to answer. I am nonbinary, specifically agender. It would be very hard for me to explain what my gender IS, but it's simple for me to tell you why my gender isn't anything else. I don't have any connection with a female gender id or a male gender id. Inherently, I know within myself that nothing else fits, that I feel separate from these other gender identities. To me, I am agender because I am genderless. It's not a very specific explanation but it's the best I can come up with. I am agender because nothing else fits. I'm willing to bet most nonbinary people will have similar answers - they are their genders because they just know, they just are.

Coley Baker Thanks for sharing your experience. Growing up, gender hadn't ever really factored into anything outside of checking a box on a form according to my anatomy. Sure, media and social norms provided me with schema, and my religious upbringing gave some significance to it, but I guess it never seemed important enough to internalize or get guidance from, or at least I just had bigger mental fish to fry in my quest for happiness. So I struggle with the notion that gender is something I can "identify" with in the first place. You hypothesize that people that Identify as a gender are their gender "because they are", and I suspect that if I have a gender, I likely am "because I am" as well, but I'm not looking for justification so much as some source of cause and effect. What is it about you that /determines/informs you of your gender? What does the gender you Identify as tell you about yourself? If you were a different gender, in what ways would that different Identity make you a different person? (I don't mean you specifically, just people in general who identify with a gender) I also suspect, that given my difficulty to say to any label "yes, that's me", many people would be inclined to suggest I'm agender or possibly demiguy(male being my gender assigned at birth), but I would have an equally hard time saying "no, that's not me" because I don't understand what it is I'm saying I'm not. Like if you were having a conversation with my brain, and asking it questions to figure it's gender out, you could ask questions in many different ways such as: "Do you Identify as male?" "Do you not identify as female?" "What gender feels most like you?" etc. and no matter how you phrased it, my brain would respond to any question with "what differentiates gender?" or "what is female" or some applicable variation of phrasing, because without that question answered, it wouldn't know how to proceed with the original question. Hope that makes sense. It stresses me out because people put a lot of stock in the importance of gender issues and its hard for me to have a productive conversation about it or even know where I stand without having a reference point of how this stuff works in the first place.

Something that drives me crazy is that when I see NB/trans people, my brain often tries to figure out what sex they were assigned at birth. I actively fight against it because it's absolutely terrible and rude and not the way I want to think at all, but it's definitely a testament to how society teaches us to split people into gender boxes.

I can identify as "gender queer" too, but I kinda feel like the whole thing becomes a thing of the persona. People that I personally come across who identify themselves as gender queer (not "gay", transgender) value perception over expression, to my conclusion. I never felt like I needed to drag my expression into society and make it societal and cultural, and a condition also. To me, expression is individual and it's a power on its own. Expression is more than just gender, too. To completely dress yourself to evoke understanding from the environment is kinda a cheap version of expression to me. To me, expression means DO YOU, FFS. Spend less time on Tumblr and more inside your soul. Bye.

This is a great video. Honestly, I still don't really understand the concept of bigender, trigender, or other/third gender (which I probably never will fully understand since I have never struggled with or questioned my gender identity), and sometimes feel like there are too many genders, and (I'm a bit embarrassed about this, because I know it's wrong) I sometimes am skeptical about people who have more obscure gender identities. I feel like this was the perfect video for me to watch because it was quick, informative, and was pretty easily understandable. Also, while being 100% pro-LGBT+, it wasn't overly whiney or preachy, which I think is what turns a lot of people off from watching these kinds of videos. Even though it's still hard for me to wrap my head around some of these genders, I'm glad that I was able to learn a little bit more about the subject.

Okay so I'm not sure quite how to word this, but I will try. As someone who has only recently discovered these terms as well, this video is really super helpful and I might even share it with my school's SAGA club. However, I can't help but get confused when the use of a "third gender" is brought up. I'm only aware of society's two main genders, male and female. I know many people are gender fluid or non-binary but I suppose what I'm trying to say is "What would be an example of a third gender?" Is it just someone who's in between? Is it up to the person? Can you someone "make up" a gender? I would like to learn please.

@radio.silence
@radio.silence 9 лет назад
***** I'm not gender fluid exactly, but I think it's totaly intuitive. I don't see why I'd feel the need to constantly think about it and consciously evaluate it, unless I have a specific reason to do so. It's more like when it changes, you just notice. When you feel more like whichever gender, you always know it cause you feel it... So let's say if I feel like a demiguy, I don't need to ask myself which gender I identify as now, because I /am/ a demiguy atm. Idk how to word it better...
@radio.silence
@radio.silence 9 лет назад
Alexis Clemons Yeah, that's right:) But because the expressions of these two are so similar... I myself can't figure out which one I identify with :D I meant that at least they bear a resebmlance, unlike trigender and third gender.
@radio.silence
@radio.silence 9 лет назад
Alexis Clemons I appreciate yours!:) I do actually see them expressions as similar to each other... Simply because I personally can't think of any particular way to express lack of gender, that would be distinctly different from expressing being gender neutral. So from my point of view, those identities are totally different, but I can't say the expressions are, as I can't think of a particular way to express lack of gender that couldn't be applied to express neutral gender, and vice versa. Don't claim any of that to be a fact tho! just my thoughts, and I speak as one who identifies with.. one of these. So like, if you could give an example of this difference maybe, I'd like to know too... And in the video, they also present those identities as being pretty close to each other... Probably shouldn't have used identities that I'm not 100% sure of.

Sure it makes sense!. All these people Ashley show us talking about what make sense to them and identify with. I don't belive that just for being in the mood of wear over sized clothes and gaming, instead of do your nails, dying your hair and and be a little more 'girly', that you are gender fluid or anything. Maybe you just get tired of this mysoginist world and you try to take a break not acting all the time as we 'suppoused to' just for being female. Or maybe you can identify better with one or two of the possibilities Ashley just tried to explain us, with two videos of ABC of LGBT! Either way, I hope you're happy with WHO YOU ARE. Perhaps the words bigender or gender fluid might suit you? I suggest looking for different stories from people who identify with those words. Though, it's also possible that you identify as female and just like the traditional male characteristics. As it was mentioned in the first video, your gender expression does not have to fit your gender. You could very well identify as a female person who enjoys typically men clothing from time to time. :)

I was thinking I may be Gender Fluid, but it didn’t quite sound right since I’ve never truly felt like I identified as male really. Not to mention I’ve never really had much dysphoria concerning my gender identity before. So I’m very thankful for this video for introducing me to the term DemiGirl! In a way I'm glad my identity is as simple as it is: transgender male. It sucks though, that my town is tiny and judgmental, my family doesn't really understand, and I have very few people to talk to about things. I used to wish I could just be happy in my body, but after cutting my own hair off, buying myself men's shirts, and coming out to close friends, I feel sooo much better. This weight I've been carrying around for years has lifted. I can present how I want. It's only a start, but it's the start I needed. I no longer wish I would wake up and feel like a girl, because I know I'm not. And I am eternally grateful for that. Ashley, you make awesome educating videos, and I thank you for being a youtuber who talks about these things. Sorry for being ignorant, but I still don't understand any of this. I get MTF/FTM trans people, that makes sense and has been proven and can be medically diagnosed. But what are all those others? I understand the words you are saying, I just don't understand the science behind it. To me it really just sounds like varying levels of masculinity and femininity, which is not the same as gender. Nobody is 100% masculine or feminine. I'm a cis woman and I am not 100% feminine, in fact I am in many ways more masculine, at least in how my brain functions. I also have some days where I feel more feminine than other days. That doesn't make me any less of a cis woman though. Wanting to occasionally wear more "masculine" clothes or be more logically than emotionally inclined doesn't make me a demigirl or genderfluid or anything like that, it just means that just like literally every single human I am not 100% only feminine (or 100% only masculine). I also get gender expression, I just don't get how you identify as "kind of a boy" or something like that. As for genderfluid and all the other things where your gender identity fluctuates, I really don't mean to be rude but honestly if you really feel like a boy one moment and a girl in the next moment (and it's not just normal variety in masculinity vs femininity) then that sounds more like some split personality disorder. Can anyone explain to me how all of this works? I am profoundly confused and have tried to find proper answers to these questions for years.
@RobRafiele
@RobRafiele 6 лет назад
I understand what you are saying - and all these terms really prove one thing - gender and sexuality are extremely diverse, like it almost seems like a personality trait. This is how I see it - because I've never quite felt like a man myself, but not a woman either - People like me try and seek validation for something that is extremely perplexing and confusing, one of these ways is to seek people who have similarities - these labels help to define such feelings, thus making it easier to feel a kind of validation. Also, its a way to try and understand your feelings concerning these things. I feel like one could get very deep into these like being worried about pro-nouns and things like that, which I do not expect people to ask, but since you know this, it doesn't hurt to call them whatever they want you to call them. I hope this helps!

I feel like the easiest way to explain the huge scope of gender is that it’s not entirely science. Its a matter of putting a name to what you feel and how you function as a person. Same as sexuality. Its not as much about finding an explanation to how you feel as it is a device of explaining what you feel to others. But that’s just my opinion as non-binary. Defining my gender as some thing other then male or female is explained in that label, maybe not entirely but, the intricacies of my own gender don’t worry me as much as it may worry others.

Thank you so much to everyone who helped in this video... this is a blessing on humanity and I want you to know that you have helped so, so many people with this video alone- and their are many, many more videos in the ABC's of LGBT series. Thank you, genuinely, this is amazing and it clearly took a lot of effort from a lot of people

Ashley I wanted to thank you and all those that helped you with part 1 and 2 of this episode, I really did learn a lot. I've been researching this topic for a while now and your videos really helped to clarify a few terms I had been having trouble understanding, mostly because I couldn't find clear definitions for them. This topic has always really fascinated me because I have always been very introspective and trying to discover my own identity. As of now I identify as cisgender female and most days tend to express myself that way. In the past, I expressed myself very masculinely. As time went on though, my personality shifted as did my gender expression. I think labels have always intrigued me most because I never felt that I fit any of them. Even though some of the labels you mentioned did describe me, none of them felt right. I guess I have just always felt like myself, whatever that was on a given day, and I didn't feel I needed a word to describe it.

So... If gender roles disapear, gender will disapear too? Because lately I've been questioning myself. What is being a boy? Because if a boy is a person who follow the masculine gender roles I am definately not a guy. And if gender is a social construct... Why do we need all these labels? We just need to express ourselves whatever we want, right?I really want to get it, but I find it hard to understand.

+CharlieFdez Gender itself probably won't disappear. People generally seem to cling pretty tightly to their identification on the man to woman spectrum. The future is likely to be more dynamic than today, not less so. We probably won't see gender disappear, but we might see it be joined alongside things like genderqueer and third-gender. Ideally, we would live in a world in which labels like this are unnecessary. Unfortunately, we live in a society in which labels are everything. The future in which we don't need labels is not years away, but centuries away (the racial equality movement started getting into the swing over 200 years ago, and are still not free of racial labeling.) The LGBT+ community is a very small part of the overall population, though our voice is quite loud. To most of the developed world, if you can't put a term to your gender identity, then you don't deserve recognition. Labels allow us to climb the political and social ladder and be more presentable to society. Only when society is either ready to accept them all, or completely sick of labels in general, will we see these concepts dissolve.

+CharlieFdez I hate to break it to you but, gender is not a social construct. if you don't fit the masculine gender role then you need to man up and grow some balls.

I really don't understand why there is a desire to categorise gender. If definitions vary between person to person and variations of definitions can spring up without some type of screening. What is the point of all this? Instead of creating new boxes to define people by, why don't we remove the boxes, drop the labels and just 'be'.

Dean Sumner I understand your point but alot of people find comfort in labels (like me) and if you don't want a label you don't need to have one

Sometimes I'm having trouble identifying as a girl but I don't really know if it's a gender issue or the fact that I hate all the misogynist stereotypes that are still attached to women and I tend to adopt masculine gender roles... I prefer to laugh around with people saying that I'm a guy when I burp, fart, drink, dress tomboy, look at girls, etc.
