I live by the Quabbin Reservoir is the largest inland body of water in Massachusetts, and was built between 1930 and 1939. Along with the Wachusett Reservoir, it is the primary water supply for Boston, 65 miles to the east, and 40 other cities and towns in Greater Boston. 39 sq miles of woodland and water shed. Wildlife galore, Moose, bear, turkey, etc. Western Ma far different than Boston area. Best wishes to all…!!!

Hello! 😊 The Ames Shovel Company originated in 1774 and products are sold even today. They were hired by the US government to supply shovels for the soldiers on the ground and also made sabers for them. Thus the trademark on this saber. After doing some research, I found out that the Ames Shovel Company did not make sabers for the government but the Ames Manufacturing Company did. They were two separate companies. Sorry for the misinformation.

Creosote is great for sealing logs. My dad built a baseball backstop back in the seventies. He got an old milk can and filled it with creosote. He used cedar poles which he soaked the ends in. When we pulled the posts twenty some years later there was no deterioration on the post bottoms at all. Utilities use it on their poles. Gotta work very well.
@greghott9155
@greghott9155 25 дней назад
And creosote was used for railroad ties. My granddad was a carpenter on the B & O RR and was commonly covered in creosote. He used it a lot on the farm too.

Pressure treated lumber commonly sold to the public is clearly rated "Not for ground contact". There is "For ground contact" pressure treated, but my local hardware store didn't know what I was talking about when I asked for it. Concrete piers 6" out of the ground with an anchor bolt in it will last forever and are super cheap.

Mike, In the past I've used a mix of Creosote and sump oil. Using a 45 gallon drum, immerse the post ends, using a ratio of three parts creosote to one part of used sump oil. Ideally for several days, then hang the posts above the liquid to drain completely. Hope this helps. Regards Robin.

First time I saw a turkey was when I was about maybe 19, driving the backroads. I stopped the car and got out, and it started running, so I ran behind it. and it ducked under a barbed wire fence and flew off. I was surprised, I didn't know they could fly :) Now they are everywhere. And, we had a lot of partridge, but you don't see them very often anymore. We used to have pheasants, but I think that was mostly because we had pheasant farms and some would escape.

Mike, in my area here in western Colorado, I built a pole barn, 40 x 64, 22 years ago and only used raw gravel at the base of the poles. I did pour 1 foot of concrete for them to set on, but I did not use any concrete or dry mix. The poles are 4 feet in the ground and the gravel poured tightly around each one keeps them tight and the water is not held close around them. I have had no issues with any rot whatsoever!

My late aunt lived in West Newbury Vermont and there are Moose crossing signs along the roads and on a trip to visit I made a joke of me no thinking moose were that far south ( which I was wrong ). She had 40 acres in a relatively rural area overlooking a narrow bottom with a neighbors cow pastures across the way. We pulled in one afternoon after being out good part of the day and I had just gotten a digital camera ( 2001 ) and was snapping pictures and saw a female moose on the road about 200 or so yards from her driveway that was elevated from where the moose was. She pulled in a minute or so later and I told her there was a moose down on the road. She was a big bird watcher and grabbed her binoculars and said “ I’ll be darn after living here for 20 years this is the first time I’ve saw a moose near the house “. Well then my joking turned into everyone buying me moose souvenirs before I left to go back to Florida where I was living at the time. You just never know what you will see in the outdoors. Be safe Mike.

I would recommend railroad ties New ones from the railroad for the posts you put in the ground. The wood always rotes at ground level, The other thing you can do is when filling the hole with concrete keep the concrete thick and bring it up higher than the ground and angle the top for good water run off.

Mike, I have seen folks using a torch to char the part of the post that goes into the ground which what I’ve been told help prevents rot…. The way they explain it is that it’s bacteria that causes the wood to rot and charring. It helps prevent that. Maybe trying that out on a single post to see how that works out. I just don’t like using pressure-treated wood. Thanks Mike, excellent live video yesterday.

I think coating posts with "tar" should work. I used a latex/tar roof sealer on the posts when I built my chicken coop. Six years on and it's holding up great, no signs of rot at ground level. I've also heard that you can drill a couple of holes in a post just above ground level, then fill the holes with a mix of used motor oil and diesel. Refresh the oil mixture every six months to a year.

There is a wrap you can use. You only need to cover the top 15 or 16 inches the bottom if it is in a good gravel is down to far to rot (so I have been told by an old fence builder with 30 yrs experience).

Bears are constantly on the move looking for food this time of year. That bear was probably about 120

You stated that you wanted something that wouldn’t rot when buried in the ground. Well, you got it in your log pile. Cut 6”X6” Cedar posts for constructing your new building. I’m from Texas and Cedar lasts a long time here.

Mike look at the post savers, they are preformed plastic that fit either 4x4 or 6x6 posts, the 6x6 ones are 60 inches tall and the 4x4 ones are 42 inches tall. Hope this helps.

I would secure your garbage cans very well Mike or keep them in the garage or something. I live near Gatlinburg in Tennessee and they are a big problem here. Once the bears find a easy source of food they we keep coming back.

When I was growing up here in Iowa we would never see deer. Now they’re everywhere even with additional licenses being issued. Now bobcats are in that category. They’re here but rarely seen. I drive over 100 miles everyday on my mail route and see maybe two a year. Last year I spotted three Bobkittens along the road. I know mom was near but she stayed hidden. I keep telling myself I need to get a dash camera.
