There it is. There’s the look. I’ve seen it for seventeen years on face after face. You all despise me. Kingslayer. Oathbreaker. A man without honor.

If you’d ask me which one of the Lannisters I consider the most tragic character, I would say it’s Jaime. For 40 years he had to choose: his personal glory or family name, a sacred oath to the King or his father’s life, Casterly Rock or Cersei, Cersei or Tyrion, staying loyal to the Queen or fighting for the living... This is why I can describe Jaime with the ‘CHOICE’ word. He was hurting so much just because he always wanted to make things better, because he put family at the first place and then faced with social disapproval. All his life was a choice and so many times he was misunderstood trying to make the RIGHT choice. Perhaps there was exactly what finished his life.
He was named ‘Kingslayer’ for murdering his own King, but actually this betrayal saved 500 thousands lives. He was judged guilty for this by everyone, but no one knew the real reason to do so (and he was too arrogant to explain his motives). And it was this fact that determined his whole life. As I once read, ’Like Cersei, he made the world into an enemy. Unlike Cersei, the world had made an enemy of him first’. I think this is the best explanation of all his following actions (and it’s so damn poetic!).
I know that many series fans were disappointed about the last season and Jaime’s character exactly. But I do not really think that his final reunion with Cersei was ‘a wreck of his development arc’. I’m not sure about GRRM decision on this matter in the books (because of the volonqar prophecy), but I suppose he approved this GOT ending, and that’s why most likely we’re going to get something similar in the books, too. Anyway, I think that was the MOST logical ending for them both. If he had stayed with Brienne, many viewers would have judged him for leaving the mother of his unborn child and letting her to die alone. But I’m sure it was impossible for Jaime. Not just ‘not right’ but impossible. Moreover, he really believed that he’s unredeemable, so there were no chances for the happy ending, to be honest. On the other hand, I think he got his ‘happy ending’ - as he once said to Bronn in season 5, he wanted to die in the arms of the woman he loved. For me, it was always been Cersei.
