THE LEGENDS NEVER DIE!
He never wore a crown, but, for me, he was the one true King of the Seven Kingdoms. The only one who could put all the lands together thanks to his wisdom and manipulating ability. He rebuilt his House and family name and grew up his children by giving them knowledge of power and state of affairs. You can blame him for lack of considering about ‘what his actual family was doing’ (Cersei&Jaime’s incestuous relationship, the enmity between Cersei and Tyrion) and ignoring ‘the whims and wishes of his sons and daughter’, but you can hardly deny that Tywin was the real power not only in KL but in whole Westeros. Underestimating Tyrion was maybe the only one his mistake, the fatal mistake.
Jaime&Genna’s dialogue from AFFC (‘A Feast for Crows’) by GRRM:
GENNA: How could I not love him [Tywin], after that? That is not to say that I approved of all he did, or much enjoyed the company of the man that he became... but every little girl needs a big brother to protect her. Tywin was big even when he was little.
/ She gave a sigh. /
GENNA: Who will protect us now?
/ Jaime kissed her cheek. /
JAIME: He left a son.
GENNA: Aye, he did. That is what I fear the most, in truth.

JAIME: Why should you fear?
GENNA: Jaime, sweetling, I have known you since you were a babe at Joanna’s breast. You smile like Gerion and fight like Tyg, and there’s some of Kevan in you, else you would not wear that cloak... but Tyrion is Tywin’s son, not you. I said so once to your father’s face, and he would not speak to me for half a year. Men are such thundering great fools. Even the sort who come along once in a thousand years.
GOT (s2 ep6):
ARYA STARK: Did you know your father, my lord?
TYWIN LANNISTER: I did. I grew up with him. I watched him grow old. He loved us. He was a good man, but a weak man. A weak man who nearly destroyed our house and name.
