This video is about my experience with the much anticipated Gotway Monster Pro. While filming this video, I fell victim to the dreaded bearing failure. Although the wheel suffered an early failure rate in the motor category, the glyding must go on.

Hey Vee, a good & honest initial review. QC & bearings a side (tis GW afterall), this is a BEAST & hence, a MONSTER of a wheel. Its getting so big & heavy one would seriously consider an ebike instead...maybe. I heartily agree that rider weight should not be a factor in accelerating/decelerating or otherwise, its not tuned properly. One thang I gotta say is you're a strong! For a 120lb nuffin', da sista is stronga than alot of brathas!!! 👍

Wow, this is by far 2020’s most aesthetically pleasing EUC. I can only assume the errors in build quality are attributed to the rookie of the year’s(Veteran)offering, and Begode panicked. It is frustrating to watch such a revered company shoot itself in the foot. Hopefully, this EUC Rembrandt will receive the proper adjustments with updates. Many Thanks

Thanks for sharing your thoughts here Vee. Seeing the guy hammer a bearing in is causing me pain, since all you need to get the bearings in is just a bottle jack and some appropriately sized wood. Very much a gotway approach, brute force with a little bit of finesse (rubber mallet head, but still yeesh).

As a Monster v2 owner, I'm very interested in this wheel. I'm also a firm believer that rider size is key when choosing a wheel. I'm 6ft tall and 230 lbs. Riding any wheel smaller than 18 inch is interesting to say the least. I have no issues with agility of my wheel but I'm starting to wonder if Gotway didn't go a little overboard with the size and weight of this wheel. It's about 50% heavier than the last generation of Monster and a solid 20% larger. I feel fairly confident that I would find it easier to carve this wheel than you do, Vee. It's just simple physics, the wheel is still less than 50% of my weight but over 80% of your weight? Regardless, to go from 65 lbs to 100 is a very large jump in weight and must have it's consequences. Too bad there are problems with the bearings almost immediately out of the box. Thanks for the honest review and I look forward to your future videos!
@BlackTalon53

What issues do you have with wheels smaller than 18''? I am 6'3'' and easily 290lbs in my gear, I have no issues riding my 16'' V10F. And I learned on a generic 14'' 350 Watt wheel too and it never quit on me either.
@EirikHaug

ANY wheel under a 18 inch..? You have never ridden a nikola then, or any other kind of high powered 16 inch and not an mcm5 before. Im 275 fully geared up and 6'3", and my nikola+ easily handles my size.

Thank you for taking time to share with me your thoughts and opinion. I greatly appreciate it. You are correct in that you will no doubtly find it a lot easier to throw this wheel than me. Although some would say it's a no brainer, because I have receive those comments, In doing my reviews, I cover all the bases to ensure those people that don't know, do know. As to why Gotway chose to go sooo heavy? Could it be they feel desperate to outperform their nemesis Leaperkim? Because outfitting these wheels with bigger batteries and larger motors are going to come at a cost.
@bleeder228
@bleeder228 3 года назад
@@BlackTalon53 Inhave very little time on samll wheels so if you have a lot of time on them, you're obviously going to have an easier time with them. It's not that I can't rude small wheels, it's that Instuggle with them because of their unstable nature. My very first experience was in a Ninbot E+. It was a complete fail. Never got even close to learning to ride on that wheel. When I finalkytook delivery of my Monster, 3 months later, I was riding within 20 minutes of practice. A year after that, I got the opportunity to ride a 14 inch wheel and a Msuper. While Ibwas able to ride the 14 inch wheel, it was sketchy and difficult. Put about 5 miles on it and decided that was enough. Msuper was nuch better.

ESPECIALLY at this price point! In all honesty, I was looking forward to this potentially being wheel number four (though two of the three were purchased this year, maybe two months apart - the MSP speed version and the Sherman) I guess I'll be waiting to see what 2021 brings. These reviews by yourself and evx were a tremendous relief to my wallet! whatsup Vee, just saw ur video randomly, having my post christmas breakfast. ive no experience with the monster line either (RSHT rider), but my interest piqued at the mention of the bearing issue. this seems to be an issue for all hollow bore type of eucs from what im seeing.....ive noted many people in the euc ommunity seem to think that this knocking noise is a bearing issue and others just follow suit for lack of a better explanation/lack of interest in pursuing this problem. im mentioning this here because you seem to have a thoughtful air about you and i just want to say...i developed this issue in my own RS during my second ride basically. I opened up the euc though, and it is NOT the bearing. i say this with confidence because once you open the motor cover, the bearing remains seated on the inner lip of the cover and you can spin it freely to feel for any scraping or friction and mine were fine. there is just some wire that scrapes or hits the inside motor cover, or some magnet or coil is slightly misaligned (that could be caused by some harsh bumpy ride or high impact to the wheel from any direction). for me, after i put the aluminum motor covers back on, the sound did indeed go away. but at the time, id no idea what i was looking for so it was a simple "dissassemble/reasseamble job." the sound did return though when i tried to gently carve (throw the wheel of out its center of gravity by swaying left to right). one thing i appreciated immensely was your comment about how going into soft mode lessened the sound btw, because i too had the same experience. it actually makes me think that it is more an issue related to how the hollow bore motors actually work (regarding the magnet and coil assembly "firing sequence"") rather than just a bearing issue. granted it could still be that people have their bearings fail after a snowy or wet condition ride, mixed with the salt and all, and this would further make ppl think that all these hollow bore motors suck because the bearing sucks for all of them...but again...i think there is a shortage of technically savvy or handy or older people who have acquired the hollow motor types of euc and thats why we are still in limbo about this issue. to qualify my thoughts a little better, i used to skateboard when i was younger and dealt with all kinds of bearings (albeit on a smaller scale but the principles remain the same). I rode them in the pouring rain and would just let them crust up with dirt and corrosion and have their seals come off and they still worked (still turned with negligible friction, that would be overcome the minute i got on the board). the RS bearings seem to be the same as those but bigger. and it seems your monster pro has the same too. the rubber mallet used in the video can be damamging yes, but i dont think it is, unless they are hitting the actually ball bearings inside the bearing assembly. yes a hydraulic press to evenly seat the bearing would be best, but imo, not cause for concern. i apologize for this long a feedback, but i hope it helps happy holidays Vee, keep doing ur thing - RSHT, NYC
@VeeEUC
@VeeEUC 3 года назад
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and opinion on the matter, I truly appreciate you, especially the time it took to write it. Although I had not opened up the motor to see whether there is a loose coil wire of the sorts, I reached out to a Gotway authorized dealer/repair person and sent them the video. It was their assessment, not my rash decision that led me to say it was a bearing issue. I'm of the mindset that if a wheel is under warranty, before I even crack it open and fool around with parts, I follow Gotway's protocol. Had they suggested to remove the hub or cover from the motor I would've done so. Also, I am inclined to believe you when you say that there is a possibility that some of these issues are not related to bearings as was the case with you. Since these motors are relatively new with EUCs, it is a crap shoot with the buyer and unfortunately with the manufacturer when trying to troubleshoot issues of the sort. Because of Gotway's inherent ignorance to these hollow motors, they perpetuate the mindset we have by chucking up certain sounds and behavior to that of bad bearings. As far as using a mallet., that too is a crap shoot. Regardless of the fact you can get away with using a mallet, one run the risk of damaging a bearing or leaving a divot in the ring when using it and yes, it would have to come as a result of striking one when hammering. My thing is, why not just do the right thing from the jump because not all installers are created equal on the assembly line. Again, thank you for the dialog. It does help. Take care, stay safe and make sure to keep your distance, wash those hands and wear a face mask. If I don't chat with you before Friday, Happy New Year. May those things that brought you happiness and joy follow you into the new year.

@@VeeEUC yepp, im with you on all of this. it seems that gotway does not really know yet how to run their company - with the quality control issues, employees branching out on their own (veteran sherman), name changes (begode?!), app issues, website issues, it feels as if its just a bunch of recent engineering college grads (if that) that got together in china and started manufacturing shit locally and it just happened to catch on. which is why i dove into this not expecting any warranty or customer service to be honored or even available haha. i feel the same about putting out quality work or not putting anything out at all. but i also get the bureaucracy and red tape of corporate structures. i hope that has something to do with it and not just...slave labor at slave wages mixed with incompetence and laziness, especially at these prices. if we were try to and budget this entire build from scratch for ourselves though, taking into account the shipping costs as well..i think there is only a few hundred in profit...which could still be a hefty profit with exchange rates in the right country i guess...a bit of devils advocate selftalk there to keep myself balanced haha...in any case, things will catch on as the community and demand gets larger i suppose, but until then, it is what it is. thanks for the heartfelt reply! happy new year to you as well. lookin forward to the rest of the content youll undoubtedly continue to generate. peace and love, happynew year to you as well!

Actually a 24inch wheel can NOT be torque. You would need about double the batteries and double the motorpower to make it as torque as a 18/19inch.. Its just physics. This was allready a problem on the 22inch Monster. making it even 24inch, the sluggishness gets bigger. (thats btw the reason why you have such big batteries in the Monsters, and why you dont see smaller Watthour versions. This big wheels just need that much power, that you HAVE to use a big battery with lots of amps)

@@VeeEUC Just to be clear: I totally appreciate your videos and style and all your great community work and the last i want is to sound like a „know-it-all“ guy. My only ambition is/was to explain why such a big wheel behaves like it does. That all has nothing todo with your weight or the wheels weight. its just the tire (and motor) size. Such huge wheels just need much more amps than to even start moving. The same effect can be seen on e-skateboards. 80mm wheels are the most torque and best braking. 120 cloudwheels or bigger directly get sloppy and sluggish. Its just like starting with the wrong gearshift... :-) GW tries to compensate that with double battery....but as its still the same motor (and motor size) used, the attempt can only fail.

hey Vee, the thickness of the motorwires has nothing todo with the charge rate of the wheel. When you want to be sure that the wheel can be charged with 20Amps(which i doubt!) only the thickness of the charge wires, AND the constitution of the BMS‘s inside the battery pack is relevant.

That is unfortunate about the bearing issue, Vee. Though I'm not interested in purchasing this model (I just bought the Sherman, and I'm waiting for it to arrive next week), I would really like to hear your additional thoughts on this wheel after you have logged some more miles. Hopefully this gets fixed, and you get an opportunity to do that. Though I like is the addition of the voltage meter on top where it can be read easily (I think this should be standard on ALL EUC's), some of Gotway, er, Begode's decisions puzzle me. The placement of the lift sensor switch (especially on such a large, and heavy wheel), along with the rather weak trolley handle, and speaker placement, makes these appear as more of an afterthought. The clip of the bearing install is painful to watch, and YIKES on the loose bolts. Rebranding isn't going to help if they don't improve on the QC. Hopefully this gets fixed for you, and you can test some more. Thanks for the video, and your review. Subscribed., and looking forward to more content.

Im very interesting in the process of removing the bearings, if this footage is available could anyone provide a link? it does not look that the bearing ring is custom, so it should be possible to find much higher grade bearing ring. What scares me the most, is that GW has thrown in a new motherboard type, and from all photos i have seen until now, this only has 9 Mosfets instead of 12. if THAT is true...this is a HUGE step back. Beside the fact that this means more stress for the Mosfets, this is a kind of unequal providing Mosfets to the motorphases. First EUCS had only 6 Mosfets. 3 motorphases, each phase having 1 MOS in and 1 Mos out. 3 x 2. Actuall -powerful boards- have 12 Mosfets. 3 motorphase, each having 2 for in and 2 for out. (3 x 4). So with 9 Mosfets its not possible to have equal amount for In and Out of each phase. i guess they used 2 for IN and 1 for out. We will see how that will be stable in the long run. Looks like we are beta testers again ;-) As always, Vee, appreciate your videos! Good work!

the carving has nothing to do with being light but with physics.. I know I mentioned my monster V2 and V3 with higher seat being like a sail in the wind but that's not the main reason the carving is hard is the centrifugal force of the wheel spinning. Larger the diameter harder it is to pull and push side to side.. .. at low speed no issue but at higher speed it becomes like a pendulum .. try to spin regular bike wheel at low speed and you will be able to move it left and right.. increase it by 50 or100% and you will see that when you move it will lock itself in that position for a bit.. now if you put a heavy tire on it, the effect with increase even more. There is no way around it.. especially on relatively thin wheel

You make a solid point but there is a difference between a 130 lb rider and a 230 lb rider on a wheel like this.
