SLOWED DOWN for your pleasure. I've been asked to slow down my videos, so I did! That's why this video is over 20 mins.
I'm so charmed by the whimsical, mermaid paintings Mary Blair did for Disney's 1953 adaptation of Peter Pan. Each has a moody and magical colour palette, a variety of fun textures, and wavy foliage that is so fun to paint. I will be painting more of these!
PS: The Moon is NOT full. It's a waxing gibbous. SHEEESH
Materials used:
*Holbien Acrylic Gouache in Primary Yellow, Primary Cyan, Ultra Marine, Primary Magenta, Primary White, and Primary Black
*Watercolour brushes / flat head and round
*Mat board
*Washi Tape
*Yogurt lids
*Water & paper towel
*Reference image: Concept art made by Mary Blair, from Disney's Peter Pan (1953)

Definitely a new favorite for me! The layeredness of the background works really well with all the foliage layers!

Thank you! I think this might be one of my favourites too! I am in awe of how Mary was able to create so much "detail" with simple brush strokes and textures.

I love all of them BUT the longer and slower the better. I never get tired of watching these!

Oh wow! That's awesome to hear, thank you! What do you think of this idea... I do a few simple paintings and post them in real time. So the video would be about 30 mins. but not sped up. Thoughts?

Yes! I love the longer, slower videos. I know that can be a lot of pressure voiceovers wise, but quiet or light music could fill in the extra spaces. I thoroughly enjoy your voice overs as well too.

@@josiesARTLAB you get it! The voiceover part is what I worry about... because, honestly, I could talk for hours without stopping, but I don't want to bore anyone. Musical interludes are a great idea, thanks!

I mainly work digitally in procreate and I still learn so much from your videos! Such awesome work 😊

That's so awesome to hear, thank you! I've noticed that working digitally has helped my traditional painting skills and vice versa. I teach a digital tools course the Emily Carr University! It's through Continuing Studies, so anyone, from anywhere, can take it. Here's the link if you want to check it out :) www.ecuad.ca/academics/continuing-studies/topic/illustration/digital-tools

I loved the pace of this one, it was perfect! I go through the exact same process with those black leaves haha. Committing your technique to memory now of painting a thin line first - always wondered how she got the tip so thin. Nice hearing the backstory on Peter Pan and thanks for the lesson on white paint! There's so much to love in this video, including your little cat friend

We need to talk brushes! I am on a mission to find the finest point. And thanks for the kind words, I feel like I'm finding my rhythm, trying to balance the movie facts with the painting tips. So happy you enjoyed this one!! (I am so into the cat... she comes every day now)

And I have a question, do you use stay wet palette ? To keep the acryla gouache (or any wet medium) fresh ? Or maybe it is part of the « challenge » ? What do you do with the artwork at the end ? frame it ? I would love to see a studio tour !
@children_of_the_craft
@children_of_the_craft 5 месяцев назад
Great question! I don't use a stay wet palette. I paint pretty fast and keep the dimensions smaller so I can do each layer quickly, and with less paint. I have most of the artwork that I have made up in my art room. I'll do a studio tour once I clean up that room! haha! Maybe I'll shoot a before and after video ;)
