Replicating Eyvind Earle's Concept Art from Disney's 1959 Sleeping Beauty With Acrylic Gouache

Can't believe I was able to ramble on about gouache, easter, and finding your prince charming for 40 minutes straight, and in ONE TAKE! No wonder the VO for this video gets goofier near the end. I had planned on doing shorter videos but the feedback from viewers and friends was unanimous... make LONGER, slower videos. DONE!
I made a wee mistake when talking about this scene, the song Aurora sings (with the prince) is, "Once Upon a Dream" not "One Day" which is from Snow White. Pretty interchangeable, if you ask me.
One thing I forgot to mention during the VO is that I'm hosting a private, Replicants Gouache Zoom course this summer! It's a 6 week course, 2 hours a week, and there are two times/days to choose from. Follow this link to my website to find out more...

Just found your channel, and super stoked! You have such great timing and I love that you throw in history… but just the right amount. Do you mix from one puddle so that the colors are more unified? Please make a ton more long format videos!!❤

Thank you so much! 💓I'm stoked that you're stoked! And I'm happy to hear that you enjoy the long format videos. I always worry that they will be too long, and people will get bored. To answer your question about mixing, sometimes I use one puddle, yes! I often will use a colour I've mixed, like a green or pink, to mix into a brown or grey. And you're exactly right, it's so the whole composition has a more unified look. It's also a time saver ;)

"stay on target" - Star Wars of course! And why isn't that an idea - some Ralph McQuarrie concept art? Or Doug Chiang? Be a bit different, but since you clearly love Star Wars.... I often use a dark blue for blacks. Maybe a dark purple or green. I'm always impressed with how you do these paintings without a sketch or drawing.

As always, loved this so much! The long form was really great to dive into the details, thank you! When you visit, you can try out my brushes and see what you think! BTW, I rewatched this movie as an adult and did find this whole scenario super creepy. She's almost 16 years old and was sheltered her whole life with 3 elderly fairies in the woods and told never to talk to an outsider EVER, and had never even seen a man before. So in reality she would've been kind of feral and terrified of seeing a human that wasn't female and an elderly fairy. It's a weird story haha. Why didn't they just raise her like normal in the castle and then at 15, ship her ass to another continent to hide out? Never a good idea to apply logic to storytelling...

lol, "never a good idea to apply logic to storytelling..." That pretty much covers it. Not only would she be feral and terrified of seeing a non-elderly fairy, but I highly doubt, that at 15 years old, she'd have her hair that dialled in. Fairytales really messed with my expectations. PS - YES to the brush test! After I leave you'll be like, I thought I had more brushes ;)
