GP-5 Useless for Preppers?

My controversial opinion that the GP-5 gas mask is useless for most preppers due to it being a 40mm GOST gas mask.
Soviet filters have long since expired and NATO filters won't make an air-tight seal with the gas mask.
Modern Russian filters are still made in 40mm GOST but can be expensive to import.
Due to the cheap prices of other NATO compatible masks, in my opinion, it would be a much better option to simply get a cheap 40mm NATO mask or an Industrial mask where the filters are much easier to find cheaply.

It was a mask made for civilians but never issued, same as pretty much every other cold war civil defence mask.

I made my own rubber hose that connected to 40mm. not saying it was perfect but it was honestly a good proof of concept as it held an airtight seal until you forced it enough but that was just the hoses manufacturer errors

My Gp-5 came with a plastic canister that seals perfectly, and screws in smooth. It says Type CBWP3. The booklet that came with it was in English and about 12 other languages. It says Batch 16/10/01, Expiry 10/2006.

I probably didnt.-I did, Looks like I will head in the direction, getting a mask, which uses ABEK filters. Maybe not the Israeli, but maybe a german one because those seem to be cheaper around here.

Recently I bought Czech CM-4 mask, and luckily I found out that the same company, Sigma, that used to make filters for CM-4 and for other masks in Czechoslovakia, actually still exists makes and sells new filters in the 40mm GOST norm (GOST 8762-75). As you mentioned- not suitable or easy to get for western countrymen but for me as a localman it's pretty easy and practical.

Use plumbers Teflon tape that is used on the threads of pipes to keep from leaking on the 40 mm filters and screwed into the GP five and it should stop airflow leaks

I saw your earlier video about the GP-5 mask and NATO filters, and I need to say something about this subject: I thought that my recently ordered GP-5 won´t take a Scott Pro2000 filter that I considered a NATO filter, but the fact is that yes it works! Scott Pro2000 filter threads nicely on this and seals perfectly.

I’m getting a GP-5, and it’s for posing and photos, and maybe sometimes fun, because me and my friends are soviet era fanatics. Now the pruduct is from Ukraine and the masks were made in 1979-1980. If I’m taking a photo, is it worth to put the filter on for a realistic feeling? I will be taking the filter off if I’m going to bring it to my friends. Also, I live in Stockholm, Sweden. Is it worth going to somewhere east to buy better filters?

Unless you get Polish FP-5 filters you'll find it hard to get working filters for it that are safe. You could either hold your breath wearing it, or follow the tutorial I made to make the filter safe to use.

You could buy a standardized Chinese gas mask hose and then you can put a nato filter on the end and that works.

Well I would still prefer with the Chinese TF-1 since it does look like the GP-5 and can take both GOST and NATO filters. Still, GP-5 is still one of the best gas masks in my personal opinion.

I bought a 3d printed adapter that allows me to use 40mm nato filters with the mask. I checked and it keeps the airtight seal. Only 15 dollars on ebay and it lets the most common and cheap gasmask on earth take high end nato filters.

I have a few modern Israeli filters that came with the Israeli civilian mask. (Tan color filters) where I am, those one of the more affordable and easier to obtain filters and they screw on perfectly. Or if not, worst case you get an adapter hose for what ever size your particular filter is. It’s just a mask and if it works, then it works. Obviously it’s not the most comfortable mask to wear, it gets hot, hard to hear, painful getting it on if you have any hair because it’s rubber, and even with the little tin of plastic anti fog inserts some of them came with, they still fog like crazy, but if you just need to be able to breathe, it does its job

There are now easily obtained adapters GOST to STANAG, the latter are easier to find. This video probably needs to be updated to reflect that.

Safe to use, yes as long as it's new and in good condition, as for airtight, only if it's a GOST 40mm not a Nato thread.

Sadly they don't exist, have a special hose on order that might let the mask take NATO filters. Will do a video test when it arrives.

Got one of these to try and used ptfe tape on the thread of a nato 40 mm filter and it passed the airosol test, could have doubled up the seal with some duct tape just to make sure... :o)

If you open up a old filter for example one of the GP-5 filters and you cant find asbestos just activated carbon granules is it safe, because it breaks down im just wondering because the broken down asestos is really small, if so is there a way to clean it out?

Sadly no, the closest thing you can get are Polish FP5 filters which are normalised or Chinese 40mm hoses which are normalised.

You could, but once you add the extra cost on you already have gone over the price of decent NATO masks, if there's any sort of hole in the converter you'll die in a gas attack as well.

My problem with the GP-5, other than the filter problem, is that you cannot a just the fit. The Israeli masks can be tightened to an air tight fit.

PTFE (teflon) tape around the thread before you screw it together. The tape should kinda stay on when you change filter.

What if you got a 40mm NATO filter tube and forced it into the GP5 then put duct tape or puffy around the connection point to keep air from leaking in then just put 40mm filters on the other end, would that solve the problem faith worry about the time it would take to change the filter?

In theory, yes, but good luck finding NATO 40mm tubes, it's not a common thing anymore, the time and money to convert it would be better spent on a good NATO mask.

Yes but they cost a lot on the international market, sometimes around £20 per filter, meaning it would cost stupid amounts of money to get spare filters.

One problem right off the bat: the mask fits very snug (which is good) but does not have the tightest seal. I am very sure I got the medium sized one. It fits but has some slight gaps on my jaw bone (up in the back by my neck). It could have been my long hair and beard (beard not so much the problem)... it was my hair. It was too long. So always cut your hair for a proper seal.

The Chinese normalised hoses do but I don't know if you are actually referring to those.

I wonder, If you had a normalized hose would you be able to put one end on a NATO Filter and connect the other end to a GOST mask? (The hose would hopefully be compatible with both 40mm NATO and 40mm GOST)

Legit question, If a NATO filter will not seat 100% in a Russian mask do you think if you placed a thin 40mm rubber washer inside the intake could that perhaps make a perfect seal?

There's already a washer there, you'd need to seal the intake at the bottom where the gap is.

What about the Israeli filters? I just got one for my new gp-5. It fits and I can breathe through it, is it not safe? The guy at the army surplus store and some guy on Reddit said that they're very safe and work with the gp-5.

They're perfectly safe, just won't make an airtight seal with a GP5 as they are not GOST threaded.

Hand on the hole of the filter, inhale. If it squeezes tightly to your face, it's air tight.

I think I've had some subs pay to have those made, if they get made well, no mold lines etc they are good but if there is a mold issue with a 3D printer then obviously they won't work.

Well the reason why I seen the gp-5 as a better gas mask then the Israeli gas mask is because the gp-5 has a helmet cover, which seems like it would make it better for wearing a helmet, seeing how nothing gets in the way. But the Israeli has these straps with bits of metal on the top, and the mask bulges out a bit and it seems like it would make wearing a helmet in one uncomfortable.

would plumbers tape work? it will probably make the filter too big to put on but who knows? You could probably get all DIY mad and make an adapter of some kind. Also I have noticed on another soviet mask I crammed a NATO filter on the intake started to split so be careful of that.

I use a modern nato filter on my GP5, for some reason with the hose attached it will make a seal.

It won't make a seal, it physically can't do it. If you use a smelling agent to do a mask fit test you will realise that.

In theory yes, but as you said, better not to damage the mask just for the sake of bodging NATO filters on it.

Chinese are selling filters for that type of mask. I bought many of them for CO and SO2 and they all fit, year of production is 2010.

Apparently black GP-5s are more rare. But it doesn't seem like there's a functional difference, the rubber seems just as stretchy and the eye pieces, filter intake and exhale valve are the same. This just makes me feel special for owning a black GP-5 as opposed to a white GP-5. Back when I had no clue that the GP-5 was a mask designed for civilian use, I had thought that black GP-5s were for officers and white GP-5s were for anything below CO.

No there are not converters for GOST masks, Chinese hoses may work, I'll test that when mine arrives.

Coleman 273 Its "brand new" I'm assuming from a warehouse. It's covered in talc but the smell is very rubbery. So before use.

It's meant to smell like that, it's the rubber it's made from, you won't smell it once the mask is on.

Weaponsandstuff93 I knew it was the rubber and the smell is a minor complaint but what I don't like is smelling like the suit itself. The only way to get the smell off is to take a shower and even then the smell is still there faintly.

Aren't the masks also expired after being in storage for so long? I heard all masks lose effectiveness after around 20 years.

No, over time rubber seals can fail on a mask but there's no guarantee of it, I have a British LAG mask from WW2 that still works if you put a newer filter on it. Masks are replaced every 20 years in industry and the military for safety compliance reasons and to make money for mask producers.
