Join us we take the all new Toyota GR Yaris RZ for a test drive on the winding mountain roads of Hakone with Super GT driver Shaun Thong. The long awaited rally inspired machine taking technology from Toyota’s WRC programme has borne fruit into this next generation high performance car for the masses. We explain and review each feature and and give our honest opinion on the driving experience.
Information on the GR Yaris below:
The GR (Gazoo Racing) Yaris is a performance-oriented variant of the Yaris which is built on a combination between GA-B and GA-C platforms, thus shared a few parts from the standard Yaris. Succeeding the limited-production Vitz/Yaris GRMN in Japan and Europe and Vitz GR in Japan, it was first unveiled at the 2020 Tokyo Auto Salon. It is available in two engine options: a Gazoo Racing-built, turbocharged and direct/port-injected 1.6-litre G16E-GTS engine that produces 192-200 kW (257-268 hp; 261-272 PS) and 360-370 N⋅m (266-273 lb⋅ft) of torque, and a standard 1.5-litre 88 kW (118 hp; 120 PS) M15A-FKS engine found in the regular Yaris models. The latter engine option is only available in RS trim level in Japan.
The G16E-GTS engine is mated to a 6-speed V16-series intelligent manual transmission (iMT) and GR-Four permanent four-wheel drive system. It has a claimed 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) acceleration in 5.2-5.5 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 230 km/h (143 mph). The M15A-FKS-powered RS variant is only mated to a continuously variable transmission and front-wheel drive system.
Unlike the standard Yaris, the GR Yaris is only available in the bespoke 3-door hatchback bodywork. It is built at the "GR Factory" assembly line in Motomachi plant.

35:00 the POV from the back seat reminds me of the excitement of meeting another car enthusiast; we would check out each others' cars, maybe test drive in each, then just discuss or talk about anything that links up one to another, be it mods done, future plans, general car knowledge, and even getting to know each other personally! The host was generally very excited about how it drove until the racedriver started appearing and talking how he loves cars that would "kill him" so basically be a challenge to throw around. But like the OP said, isn't this supposed to be a very tight gripping rally car that can be pushed through corners very fast BECAUSE it's so stable? Doesn't make it a "warm hatch" imo. A warm hatch is the Golf mk4 V5 aqn that I drive. Plenty of power and torque but lacking any sort of pro cornering due to the stock shocks made for a steady drive. If engine and exhaust sound is what get's you going then the golf v5 2.3 is all you need. But everything else this Yaris GR is miles beyond the Golf 4 conerning handling. Also, if you want a better exhaust sound someone already put 76mm dual twin exhausts on the GR Yaris and it sounds amazing. Then what does it miss then? With 256hp and 266 pound feet torque, different AWD modes, 6 speed short throw manual, toyota 5 year warranty, sporty styling, economic to drive and in my opinion a nice functional interior then perhaps this pro driver was expecting this car to fullfill all his wishes instead of what it intended to be: A performance rally car.

"why GR yaris didn't use Carbon fiber roof?" Because this C-SMC is more easier to create a complex shapes. And one more point, C-SMC is not “plastic coated with carbon fiber”, C-SMC is a “sheet impregnated with resin in carbon fiber”.

29:08 "Focus RS Mk2 is one of the very few first 5-cylinder road cars" - that's not true. That Duratec is just a rebadged Volvo whiteblock, a series of 5 cylinder engines used in mass produced road cars since 1990, 19 years before the Focus RS mk2 came to market. Almost all petrol Volvo's between 1995 and 2008 were 5 cylinder, and some of them were used in touring racing (with the famous 850R wagon winning the BTCC at one point). It was actually near the end of its production run by the time the Focus RS came to market, ramping down significantly in 2009 in favour of Volvo's new 4-cylinder range and finally ending in 2016 IIRC. There were also quite a few 5 cylinder Volksagen and Audis in the 1990s, used in their hotter models.

I get what they are trying to say. The car performs very well, it's fast, nimble and has a lot of grip, but at the same time it's too compose. What I mean by this is that it doesn't suffer a lot from understeer but it also doesn't oversteer a lot. And the engine even though it likes to rev, it doesn't sound very good and the exhaust note is awful. Like they said the problem is the way this car was advertised (by Toyota and car magazines, youtube channels, etc.) this car was compared to cars like the sti, the evo, quattro, and other rally legends and in my opinion (again this is just my opinion) this car doesn't seem to be as exciting to drive as an sti or an evo. I have been on an old sti and it's an experience like no other, the engine sounds amazing, the car corners really well and you can make the rear pop out without much effort. I'm not trying to start a argument and don't think that the reviews are bought but it's really wierd that a lot of car magazines are giving it 5 stars because I don't think any car deserves that. I still have to drive the car to have a final opinion but I was a little disappointed because being an evo fan like I am and seeing tommi makinen's name on the project I was expecting something like and evo 6.

Sixth car in history to get a 10/10 from Top Gear, yet these guys think its a warm hatch. @@Philbyyyy I still think it was ridiculous of the host to expect the car to have a '90s-jdm sportscar' feel to it, when in the days of 2020, theres strict carbon emissions regulations and safety regulations too. The roads that the UK journalists took were much more bumpy and were a perfect way to showcase the GR Yaris's ability to absorb bumps at high speed, unlike the ultra smooth Hakone Turnpike that these guys did take their cars at. Him disliking the 3 cylinder sound is entirely subjective, and I feel like it tainted his overall verdict on the car.

One should get the best version of the car, RZ high performance, the torsen diff is a must, put a higher flowing exhaust system on it, remap it and increase the boost to 2bar held to redline, that should see the 3cylinder setup to 350-360ish hp. It is now at 269.8hp and 42.7 kgm/trq with boost at 1.58bar@4200rpm dropping gradually to 1.08 bar by redline, in stock form. This platform has excellent tuning potential.

Interesting conclusion, it seems like you feel it's a bit of a let down in all honesty? @@soberacidtrip The japanese specs are a little bit different from what we get in Europe. The Japanese RZ spec has the red calipers but doesn't have the Torsen LSD, Forged Wheels, High Performance Suspension and the PS4S Tire, those are part of the RZ High Performance Package. There's a few missed opportunities in this Video I feel like, he also confused the track and sport modes. I'm pretty sure that the softer suspension and basic tyres don't help their impression.

Many missed opportunities in this video. If you have never driven/owned Subaru Impreza STi's & or Mistubishi Evolution's, then you won't understand this car's purpose - It's a rally car, that means it designed to change direction quickly, at lightning speed. It's not really a 'hot hatch', which is usually a front wheel drive road car made for smooth tarmac, with big limitations in the wet. This GR Yaris will be a very capable car on all road surfaces, in all weathers, especially at changing direction quickly, going around tight corners and bends, that's where this car will excel. This car is special, it will be special and unique to drive, whereas a Golf R, Audi S3, BMW M135i Xdrive are not special to drive. (Also, this GR Yaris in the video is the one with open diffs, not LSD's. The wheels tell you this. The model with the LSD's has 10 spoke wheels. Forged, BBS)

The LSDs aren't required on public roads and driving within speed limits. That's more for the track.

What is with this review? It seems totally at odds with all other reviews. You say an enthusiast won't like it... According to all reviews I have read it is the best hot hatch of the last 39 years. Far superior to everything. What is he talking about that a Megane or a Focus Rs wants to kill him? They are totally stuck to the ground and incredibly grippy. Pretty poor review from what I can tell. I don't think that guy drove it enough if that is the conclusion he came to.

Uhh...Sport mode is 30:70 (so more to the rear)..Track Mode is 50:50..so not exactly sure what you guys were feeling. Also...the RZ high performance is what is 5mil+ yen and the LSD (although Torsen) makes a huge difference if you are going to push it at curves (which is what most "enthusiasts" have gone for. The RZ with the sensible performance upgrades woul dbe in the mid 4mil yen mark (if I am not mistaken). You should get your hands on a RZ High Performance as well...would be a good back-to-back comparison. So..uhh..yeah...as much as I love the geeky reviews of others...this review is a little bit off on the facts :)
