2 weeks into my new BRZ. From a recent Road & Track Article: The BRZ makes everything else on the market today feel like an overcomplicated, over-complex bloatfest.

Pretty well said. A bit more a throwback and more analog/visceral and not as video game-ish as modern cars. It was the flaws of cars of yesteryear like Lotus Elan, several British sportscars from Jag to Triumph to MG including old Corvettes, Alphas, Fiat Spider etc that gave them their character. Perfection as it turns out can be a bit boring aka BMW.

Wow. I didn't expect the engine sound remove to sound so much better. I thought the sound deadening would result in something quieter
@mikea5205
@mikea5205 2 года назад
Same here, sounds just fine to me. I'm more shocked at the fact Toyota piped in the fake engine sound in a car like this. I imagine they will remove it altogether in the years to come or at least have a way for us to turn it off.
@ARentz07
@ARentz07 2 года назад
@@mikea5205 I think it's pretty clear that many manufacturers think "louder = better" even if it's fake sound. Enthusiasts, for the most part, hate the fake sound, which is what the auto makers are failing to acknowledge. On the other hand, if you're driving the car "normally" or just not an enthusiast, you might not care about the fake sound. I'll throw my wife under the bus here and say she falls in this category haha. She thinks her 330i sounds really nice. I will admit, at low RPM the piped-in sound is okay, not offensive, but anything over 4k RPM and it sounds like a video game sound effect. Kinda takes me out of the experience of driving. On the other hand, in my IS 350 I can disable the fake sound, which I do because it's not needed.
@Surestick88

The actual engine sound was way better, to my ear it had a bit more of a growl to it.
@nah3193
@nah3193 2 года назад
Engine sounds through speakers always sound muffled to me. Recording the engine sound and playing it through car speakers(which are from a studio monitor) on top of the actual engine sound is a terrible idea. You'd really need to EQ out a bunch of interfering frequencies to make them stack well. I think it'll get better over time. I bet electric cars will sound cool at some point too.
@TheTheMatalexander

@@EverydayDriver I would be interested to see a comparison against the first gen BMW Z4 3.0si coupe and the GR86. @@PeytonLindsay86 I wouldn’t be worried. The first gen was kinda noisy too. We just don’t have much sound insulation since it’s such a light car. As long as there’s no clunks and rattles while driving you are okay. The transmission is just loud in my experience.
@potatochobit
@potatochobit 2 года назад
well, if your goal is to be a cheap @ss you should have just bought an old used corvette. the GR86 is a great value but dont think it is a cheap car considering they are over 30,000$ out the door and keep in mind if your goal is performance you could have had a brand new veloster N which may not be as fun "subjectively" but will certainly stomp the GR86 on a real track course. the goal here is "compromise" in cost, performance and value.
@garboi8976
@garboi8976 2 года назад
@@potatochobit but I want a new car. The veloster N (which I heavily considered) costs 33,000 before markup and taxes and fees for the what I want. The GR86 was 30,300 before all of that. Not to mention the Toyota dealership near me does $0 markup. The only place with a velostern N within any reasonable distance to me was $3k over on just a 1.6t r spec. They told me it would be close to 40k for an N. So not only did I save money getting the 86, which I bought cash, I also got a more enjoyable car. I drove a type R which was not as fun as this and couldn’t drift. I can’t find any new rwd car in a good trim level for this price. Also I have seen several blown theta II series engines at my shop and they are not impressive in any regards internally. That’s another thing that pushed me away from the veloster N. The average new price of a car is $47,100. So yeah I’d say it was pretty cheap. Let me know if I misunderstood you. I took what you said as saying the Gr86 is not worth the money, which I disagree with. If you don’t mind used, a C6 is great. But you also have no new features and who knows how it was treated.

It takes about 5 minutes to just disconnect the noise generator on your own. You open the passenger door and pop off the side dash cover. Sound box is visible. Reach in and unplug connector. Tape connector to something so it won't rattle. Done. I don't automatically hate sound generators, but this one seemed especially artificial to me and overly loud at high rpm. 7:55 "and we need to stop equating power numbers with fun" THANK YOU! I couldn't agree more with this. People these days always associate more power for more fun but it's not the case at all. How could you ever enjoy a 800hp car with an automatic on normal roads? You're just gonna go all over the place. It's all about the status quo of saying "yeah it has a lot of hp and goes 0-60 in very few seconds". These aren't real car enthusiast. They're just posers. That's not how we should see fun in cars at all. Just this morning I had an argument with someone who was comparing the Porsche GT3 with the GT2 RS, by telling me that the "GT2 goes faster because it's turboed". I told him that why would you ever need 700hp on a lightweight car?! You'll just spin and oversteer every second. Plus it doesn't have high RPMs and it doesn't have a manual. The GT3 is naturally aspirated, so it revs up to 9000rpm, with 500hp or so, still a lot but way better and more than enough and it has a manual transmission. Just like that, the GR86 is the perfect recipe for fun. Well enough power and good torque distribution, manual transmission and RWD with a diff and perfect weight distribution. I love this car so much.
@chady7009
@chady7009 2 года назад
Totally agree. With these high horsepower typically expensive cars, where are you going to be able to fully ring out the car? The race track maybe, but on the street the most you can experience is raw acceleration. Is that all there is to driving? Hell no. The GR 86 is an aspirational car for myself, something with due time I can afford, and not to far off. Sure a Ferrari is cool, but its it a true driving machine or a status symbol.

Thank you for providing such clear and logical reviews/feedback targeted towards “everyday drivers”. I’ve been flip flopping constantly between looking for a used Cayman or a brand new GR86/BRZ. Porsche resale values have gone up considerably over the past 24 months which has made me lean much harder toward a new GR86/BRZ purchase decision. I’ve been afraid that I would regret that at some point but your reviews have really helped me feel confident that I will be thrilled with this vehicle for a long time to come. It was a tough choice between a new GR86 6 speed VS an old 5th Gen Camaro Z/28 with the 7 liter. Ultimately after driving both back to back, the Camaro won me over. I know it's a more expensive car but god damn it is but the most fun on four wheels I've had since the 911 Turbo years ago.
@JacesOwnWorld
@JacesOwnWorld 2 года назад
The Z28 is a lot better car. The GR86 gets a lot of hype because it’s under $40k for a RWD, manual sports car, but to me that’s a lot of $$ for a pretty slow car. So I don’t see the hype. I’d rather buy a used car, that’s a lot better, like you did. E46 M3, S2000, and so many more can be bought for a lot cheaper, and provide more fun. Spending a little more $$ for a used Z28, or even a GT350, is so worth it. So much more fun. The GR86 is a toy

@@avery4528 My thoughts. Yes its an extra 600 lbs (2800 and change for GR86 and 3400 and change for Camaro), but more power, quicker and better weight distribution (52/48 for Camaro and 56/44 for the GR86). Prices are similar. Of course the Camaro does not have the hype. But other than the weight the Camaro V6 is a better car.

To the point where I'm pretty sure Subaru makes its smile goofier every time they redesign so everyone will think they're not serious about this collab. @Andrew-mk7rm 4 месяца назад
You might want to learn on another car first, preferably an older car that you don't mind being hard to. If you're learning for the first time in your brand new manual car then you always run the risk of damaging the gears if you make big mistakes. Luckily my dad's friend runs a small used car dealership and he let me learn on one of his cheap inventory cars that I borrowed for a few weeks, a 20 year old Subaru that was already in rough shape to begin with, so I was able to learn worry free. I then bought a brand new civic si manual a few weeks later. I'm glad I didn't have to learn from scratch on my new baby and put her at risk

I sold my Porsche 2009 Boxster S which is a 987.2 it had a PDK transmission and I had all season continentals on it. I bought a 2022 Gr86 manual transmission. One of my main reason for this was having the ability to recline the seat in the GR 86 and having easy access to the rear seat area for luggage food etc. The GRE 86 kicks into a slide much easier than the boxer ever did and the Porsche being an S model with 310 horse was definitely quicker and faster ,but the GR 86 has plenty of power so I’m fine there.

Todd Smith While my Cayman (110k miles) may be my favorite car I’ve ever owned there are things I miss about about my old FRS. Besides how much fun it was to have the tail step out in a a controlled manner and the obvious practicality of having a foldable back seat, I miss track days.The 987.1 is known for oil starvation issues and is a real gamble on the track. There are fixes but taking the cost and risk into consideration along with the lack of a LSD, the risk out ways the reward. The improved performance of the already track ready GR86 along with a warranty makes for a compelling consideration for the GR86 at its price point.
