Secondary Science teacher William Neuwirth at the Mandela International Magnet School facilitates his students first use of the +1 routine to review and consolidate material they have been studying.
The technique demonstrated in this video includes: - Writing whatever you already know/understand about a topic - Next group does the same, adding ideas - Repeat until all terms have passed around the room - Teacher listens for gaps and interpretations which may be useful to share - Paper goes back to the original group, and a summary definition is explained to the class by the students Mr Neuwirth states that he uses this routine to stimulate flexible thinking, rather than filling in a template. This task develops student's memory of topics, and allows students to learn from each other. He wants "lively conversation" and interaction. The students also benefit from keeping these sheets as another form of study notes.
