Let's make grafting fun. Forget all the science and big words. Just put on some tunes, pour a cup of coffee and enjoy the process. If you need cuttings you can get them here: www.guacfarm.com
Hi Tom, I really wanted to thank you for your wonderful educational videos. They've really helped by gardening skills, and cutting down the trails and errors that come with that. I really wish more people followed you to gain a better understanding of our food sources and environment in general!
Thank you! I have a Haden mango tree that makes THE best tasting fruit I've ever had - this coming from a Miami native that grew up eating mangos. My sister wants a tree so now I know how to make one for her.
Fantastic grafting lesson! You make it so easy, simple & fun to do! I have forwarded very many videos to my friends/family folks for learning references. The term you were searching for @7:50 is Cambium or Cambium Layer. :) I am sure you already know that by now. :) Thank you soooo very much!
You know what, you motivated me, I'm studying maths and during my worktime i'm completely disconnected from the world, using fancy words and theorems, I recently ate the best mango i ever tasted so i kept the seed, and thanks to your videos, you motivated me to grow my own thanks man !
It makes me so happy that you had a good mango. So many of the mangoes that you find in the supermarket are blend but it really is an amazing flavor if you get the right variety, picked up the right time of year.
@@SleepyLizard I don't really know about the one I ate but it had that orange color, little to no fibers and an amazing tropical taste, I guess every mango is different but damn, that one made me smile
Love your videos. I am going to try this. My neighbor has a tree that produces lots of delicious mangos. I hope she will allow me to get a few fruit and a cuttings.
Bro I've been eating mangos all my life and I just learned that they are Polywhatever 🤯. So it doesn't matter what type of seed I start, it only matters what type cutting I graft on to the seedling. Oh it's about to go down! Thank you for the great video and for not taking yourself too serious.
Jorge, As a fellow mango lover I know the feeling. It goes by variety, some are polyembryonic and do not require grafting. The other varieties require grafting. For example a Nam Doc Mai does not require grafting whereas a Haden does.
@@SleepyLizard When I grow up I want to be just like you, lol. I am actually in the beginning stages of starting a nursery but eventually I would like to live the life you're living and become a grower here in Saint Cloud, FL.
you are so lucky i have tried to germinate mango seeds for about a year and finially got one to grow and the tree came up and the first set of leaves opened up and only one massive leaf came out and i brought it home and put it under a grow light with all my other trees and plants and the one big leaf is shrivling up but the only hope i have is that the second set of leaves is quickly coming in so hopefully they grow without a problem. by the way i am only fourteen so doing alot of fancy things is limited. keep up the amazing work and see you in your next video.
That's great! I'm not sure how grow lights work but mango seedlings need partial light not full sunlight. Can you simulate partial light with the grow light?
Thanks. I would love to hear anything you know about family trees and fruit salad trees. I think that's multiple grafting to the branches instead of the stem, then carefully pruning?
Jason, I don't know what a family tree is (aside from the human ancestry type) but people grow fruit salad trees as a novelty where they'll graft several types of citrus onto one rootstock. I've read where folks have successfully grafted up to 4 varieties of avocado onto a single tree but i've not had the opportunity to see one.
So can you explain zoning? Does the seed has to be local and graft of any variety ? Or both? Or seed can be from anywhere and graft have to be compatible with the zone?
Hi there, love your channel. I just grew my fist mango tree, its about 2 months and its growing super fast. I would love to graft a Florida red mango. But not sure when to graft.
Thanks again for great video's. Question, how soon can I graft. Time of year and how tall or old does the plant/tree need to be? I planted a mango seed maybe 3 months ago? Started it the way you showed us. It is 8 inches high, now, from the top of the soil. I am dyeing to graft it from a friends large mango tree. Please tell me what to do!!!!! ?? Thanks... P.S. I just read one of your comments. You say Nov. Dec. is a good time to graft. So what about the age and/or height of the tree/plant, mine is 8 inches high? Thanks.
Hi Marc, how you doing? You can graft as soon as the diameter of the seedling matches the diameter of the seedling. Yes, right now is a good time to graft mango. An 8 Inch seedling is fine if the diameter matches the diameter of the cutting. Good luck!
we don't want the tree devoting energy to anything other than the graft. If it has rootstock growth then it will divert energy there and the rootstock will become dominant.
Curious, any experience and good results from grafting more than one variety Mango to root stock with several branches? As an example, early season. mid season and late season.
Thank you for sharing this grafting instructions step by step, I will definitely give it a try. Can this work for an avocado tree? Or any other fruit tree I wonder?
Love your videos! Clearly and simply explained with no extra big words. I'd like to know where i can buy the seeds for mango rootstock, heard turpentine is the best, correct me if I'm wrong. And also around when should i plant the root stock so they can be ready to graft at the right season. I know this video is a bit old but i hope you see my comment and clear my doubts if possible!😁🙏 I really want to start grafting all sorts of fruit trees and am so glad i came across your channel!
@@janettpacheco2470 ok, you're in the best place you could be. My contact info is in the "about" section of my channel. You can find my number there and send me a text.
I love your videos. I have a mango tree that I do not know the variety but it is delicious. I have 6 seedlings growing from this tree and want to graft onto them. They are about a foot tall now and maybe a month old. How long before i can graft onto those seedlings and when is the time of year to take a scion from my tree to graft to them? Thanks for your great videos
Usually around 4 months old will be enough time. Now that we are coming to the end of mango season it would be best if you pruned your tree after you pick your last mango then let the new growth come and harvest your cuttings in November.
2:09 😂😂😂 it's okay! It's a good thing I watched a few of your more recent videos from 3 or4 months ago about which varieties of mango is best... and you explained which mangos are polyembryonic and monoembrynic. Damn it, there's those long words. It's just incomprehensible just how many varieties of mango and avoc- Damn it, I used another complex word! How do I aleays end up saying a very long word! If you were my teacher, you'd be the best teacher ever!!!
The lower part doesn't effect the fruit at all but we try to use seeds that give a nice strong disease resistant resistant platform for the graft to grow on. And yes people have successfully grafted more than one variety of mango onto the same tree.
@@SleepyLizard "Buenas" also works, as in "Buenas tardes", and "Buenas noches", (Good afternoon and Goodnight). If you haven't visit DR yet, you should try visiting Bani on the Mango season, I think there we have the largest variety of Mango trees, also Aguacates (avocados), but they are famous for their mangoes.
sounds like you might have a polyembryonic variety which means you can separate them and plant them each in their own pot...you don't have to graft polyembryonic varieties either...you'll get identical fruit in 3 years. Do you happen to recall the type of mango you got the seed from?
Hey SleepyLizard! Does it matter what type of scion I graft to a seedling? Like say for instance I graft a haden scion to a glenn seedling will that matter? Just wanna know cause I'm just getting the hang of growing my own plants and I would someday like to have my own fruit! I will be buying from your shop. Thanks!
So to start, I need a mango seedling? One that actually sprouts from the seed, and then I cut it and add the piece from the Haden mango? I’m looking into this because my mother in law has a Haden mango tree that’s like 20yrs old, and I want to grow one for me because I love mangos! So, I can get the graft from her tree…
This is a fantastic video! It is the middle of summer for us her is Australia, if i start the process now, do you think my mango tree will survive has the months get cooler or should i wait for next summer?
@@sarahjanineallen3223 yes, i've posted messages in RU-vid's community section to try and connect folks in Australia but it didn't work. Keep searching and good luck.
Is it important to put a plastic bag over the scion after you graft?? I’ve seen lots of videos where they do that.. I’ve tried to graft a few times and only one of my grafts has been good. It’s not yet flowering anything but it’s been a month and it’s still very healthy. Do I just keep waiting until it flowers..also.. I did put a bag over the scion that is healthy just want to know for future grafts if I need to do it or not.thanks love the video!
Wow very informative and motivating. I am doing some projects and wanted to ask a question... So I was given a mango tree, but don't know which type of mango was the seedling. I already have a huge Valencia Pride Mango Tree and wanted to know if I can do grafting onto the seedling from my Valencia so I can grow some Valencia Mangos from it. Is that how it works? Thank you :) My trouble is understanding... can you just plant any seed from any mango, but graft from a tree that gives off delicious mango to end up with delicious mango?
@SleepyLizard I'm so happy. I truly enjoy your videos. They are so easy to understand. Your prompt response is also appreciated; it means a lot for those beginners who have so many doubts and questions.
you can use any rootstock but turpentine is preferred in Florida yes. How small? I've seen some surprisingly small diameters grafted but I prefer to wait till they're maybe the width of a straw.
Awesome👍 question , i did side bark grafting to my 20 year old mango tree yesterday using 3 scions in one go. I covered it with plastic cling wrap top to bottom including covering it with white plastic bag no holes and sealed with duct tape, is it correct? Pls comment if i need to remove it. And i place the scions in the middle of the bark hopefullly it will attach with rootstock later on. Pls advise if i can still correct it if it was not right since only few days have passed. Thank you so much.
What if you just get a branch say from mango tree and put it in water for it to root and then plant it in the ground ? If it does not produce fruits, can you then graft with another branch just like you did it? Or does it have to be from a seed plus another stem from fruit bearing tree?
@@SleepyLizard you can grow multiple types of mangos on one tree by taking different varieties of mango scions and putting them on on a old tree by making a slit, cut the mango scion at an angle and repeat the process multiple times with different scions
I’m not related to the dog whisperer but if it’s the same guy I remember his show on TV and I wish I did have his skills because sometimes we get some nasty dogs around the farm ha ha Ha
Can I grow your scions on 2 year old started plants I’m in South Carolina and I have several trees started I bring them in or cover them and they come out so far ?
when will cuttings be on sell again for Mangos? Also do you sell cuttings for Avocados? Is it possible to grow mangos in South Carolina? I know avocados can be done
Hi Raven, I'm not selling cuttings right now. We sold out in the spring so my trees need to regenerate. It'll probably be July before I have any. As for mango in South Carolina I'mafraid you're out of luck. It gets too cold up there. Are you growing avocado now?
I’ve got other customers in Savannah and with some work you can grow avocados you are unlikely to be able to grow mangoes successfully in the savanna climate however. I recommend a cold hardy Avocado variety like Oro Negro or Hass
@@SleepyLizard… Thank you, for the reply. Are there any other suggestions you can make for someone that is attempting to grow various varieties from seed?
You mentioned that you cut into the root stock off center. Is that just slightly off center? I've tried grafting mangos many times with no success. I always tried to cut the root stock straight down the middle, maybe that was part of my problem.
@@SleepyLizard Thank you! Also, I've found that the snipped root stock will constantly want to send up new branches. I'm assuming you break those all off when you see them so that maximum energy will go to the scion?
That won’t work. You still wind up with seedlings. That said with mangos it’s a bit complicated. Some varieties grow true to seed and do not require grafting. Do you recall the type of mango you got the seed from?
