On this episode of Searching for History, Erin and I are on the third day of a road trip from Washington State to Arizona. In this video we visit the ghost town of Grafton, located about 20 miles east of Hurricane, Utah, along the Virgin River. Grafton was first settled in 1859, with the goal to grow cotton. The town grew quickly. There were some 28 families in 1864 but the success of the town dwindled, by 1890 only 4 families remained. By 1944 it was a ghost town. Today, you will find a handful of restored buildings, which include an old school and four homes with associated outbuildings. The ghost town, surrounded by farmland next to the Virgin River, with the mountains of Zion National Park in the background, it really is a magnificent. This is the fifth of a twelve-part series that documents the historical and archaeological sites Erin and I visited on our journey to Arizona. Join us as we visit the Grafton Ghost Town.

Beautiful homes and church. I love the old, creaking floors.

My great great grandparents lived in Grafton. My gg grandfather, John Harvey Ballard. died and was buried there in 1891. My gg grandmother, Charlotte Pincock, died and was buried there on 1901. I've always wanted to visit Grafton and see if I could find their grave sites. I don't suppose I will ever get to do that now, so thanks for the brief look into some of the places they might have frequented. during their lives

I am so happy that we were able to give you a glimpse into the town where your great-great-grandparents lived. There is a cemetery on the edge of Grafton that unfortunately didn’t make it into the video. I found a website that contains a listing of the people buried at the Grafton cemetery. There are many Ballards; both of your great-great-grandparents are on the list. Here is a link to the site: www.findagrave.com/cemetery/77244/grafton-cemetery Here is a link to the search results for last name, “Ballard,”: www.findagrave.com/cemetery/77244/memorial-search?firstname=&middlename=&lastname=ballard&cemeteryName=Grafton+Cemetery&birthyear=&birthyearfilter=&deathyear=&deathyearfilter=&memorialid=&mcid=&linkedToName=&datefilter=&orderby=r&plot= Click on the person’s name for more information. My wife and I visited Grafton about 15 years ago. We drove out there from Zion and drove off the highway down an unpaved road for miles to get there. We were there all alone and it was surreal. We didn't see another human being for the entire trip. We got to explore Grafton completely undisturbed for about 3 hour. It was very interesting. The cemetery was informative with interesting epitaphs on grave markers. From there we drove out in the opposite direction we came in ending up on the North rim of the Grand Canyon where we stayed in a small cabin. Great trip for sure.....

@curtgnomes Thank you for sharing your experience visiting Grafton. The setting of the town, its surrounding landscape, so near to Zion, it is incredible. You are lucky to have had Grafton all to yourself. There were a few other people we had to share Grafton with. Thank you so much for watching the video and leaving a comment.

@@searchingforhistory Too bad you didn’t get footage of the cemetery. The Berry family were killed by Indians there in 1968?? The inscriptions on their grave markers indicates the incident. They were in their 20s….. Says “Killed by Indians”.

Unfortunately, there were several people in the cemetery at the time and the day was getting late with a long drive ahead of us, so no video footage from the cemetery. You might also like our video on Fort Pearce, which is a little over an hour drive from Grafton, outside of St. George. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3tjQ9-IQ4Qk.html

I just read the USA has 63 National Parks, and hundreds of smaller sites managed by the National Park Service. There are also 24 UNESCO sites. I have been to a few of them. Lots of cool places to visit.

Beautiful place with hills nearby. Must have been a pretty place to live. As usual, hard work to make a living.

Yes, right outside of Zion National Park. Very beautiful surroundings. I agree, it must have been hard work to farm there. As soon as the Hurricane canal was built, they moved down the valley into Hurricane. Thanks for leaving a comment and watching the video!

I live in St. George and by the looks of it they have done a lot of work in the house and the other places on the property. People were vandalizing the house and the school. Since people were destroying the property, they had to put camera's in and people couldn't go into the houses unless it was the little one. Some of the other houses was too dangerous to go into. I might have to take a drive out there when it cools down in October. I have a lot of pictures of the place before they started fixing up the houses. The little house that's at the 8:27 time stamp, I got a freaky picture from one of the windows.

From your description it does sound like it has changed a lot. It appears each building has been restored or repaired to some extent. The inside of the school looks really nice. I wish we could have gone inside. Now I am curious about your picture... Thanks for leaving a comment and thanks for watching the video!

Grafton used to be a point breaker for the silver pursue rollers. They had these blue button impliments and rust creakers that would steam flake their over pots. This is why most hollows never put an output on them.

@@searchingforhistory It has nothing to do with geology, but a fun activity for kids and adults alike. It is basically a world wide treasure/scavenger hunt. Some of them are hidden under McDonalds trash cans and others are hidden in interesting places like a fire lookout or a historic ghost town. By the way it was cool you could get in the buildings. I was there about 7 years ago and no buildings were unlocked.
@searchingforhistory
@searchingforhistory Год назад
@@rw7632 After your post I was reading about geocaches. I will have to keep a look out for them. It was cool that buildings were open. Unfortunately, we were going behind other people finding they had left the doors completely open. We were closing them all as we left. It got us thinking that maybe someone goes around at the end of the day and closes and locks each building for the night.
