@@farazkhawaja4402 no, why would it burn up ? If it's not in atmosphere it won't be getting friction and in space it can make that speed. Because of its speed made in space it will hit the surface before it could be vaporised in the atmosphere.
@@cryonim Very wrong It would still need to travel through earths atmosphere and would certainly vaporise, I don't know why you're using it's fast speed as an argument against this, you seem to think that it's so fast, that the atmosphere wouldn't notice it long enough to burn it, in reality, that higher speed would do nothing but count against it, it still has 10,000km of atmosphere to fly through, and the quicker the speed, the more friction and heat generated, the more likely it would be to burn up, which it certainly would

Yeah I think he forgot to apply the .99% light speed to the comet. Seems like it did the damage it would do just hitting at its normal speed. Something that large going .99% light speed would probably instantly incinerate everyone on the Earth
@Turd Ferguson not really, the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs is estimated to have hit the earth with about 2-80 times the energy Halleys comet would, with the speed it currently got. Remember that halleys comet is a loose collection of ice and dust, so it's a lot less dense

@@Yo-Yo__ something traveling that fast would be extremely visible from space. It would take a few seconds but there would be time to see it depending on its origin point.

@@raven4k998 assuming things scale linearly at faster than light speed (hypothetical scenario), I don't think the Sun would notice a few exploding airplanes.

but the thing is, this grain of sand is at 99% the seed if light, most jet planes cant go that fast. If an airplane crashed at that speed, it would do much more damage.
I wonder if that simulator can do penetrations or if its a stop whenever something collides. Would be cool if he could make something hit the moon and penetrate it before hitting earth, and see if it's a plausible scenario (not near the speed of light)
the whole point of world destroying simulators is to be able to model potentially destructive forces in order to prevent them. we want to prevent destructive scenarios precisely because this is the only world we can currently survive on. your comment was neither funny nor insightful. have a sh*tty day.
When humans are prone to watching destruction from movies like 2012 or independence day or predators destroying then its not even a drop in backet type visual effects

Everyone seeming disappointed by the grain of sand result: Please keep in mind, that was a literal "grain of sand." ONE of the little specks you wipe off your feet before you put your shoes back on... And it created an explosion that you saw from space.
@@toxic_narcissist yes, the Yucatan, possibly an area now partially submerged, but definitely partially on land, & in that time, when there was no ice at the poles, the ocean was deeper & so maybe it did hit water.... idk
Tbf, in reality the nokia should have enough energy to compare it to a fairly large nuclear explosion. Havent done the math but seems about right. And back in the 40s many US-scientists were afraid leading up to the Trinity test because it was believed that a nuclear weapon such as that could ignite earth's atmosphere. Anyway, for reference, the grain of sand had 20 TJ, Trinity had 100TJ, Little boy of hiroshima fame had about 60TJ. So 3 grains of sand.

For my birthday, my grandma knew I loved space and my card was talking about Halley's Comet. It said the next appearance was in 2076. She said if she was alive at 104, we could watch it together. I love her so much.
