What I believe they mean is the 4D equivalent of an axis. In 3D space objects rotate on a line (the axis). 'Reflecting' a 2D object means rotating it in 3D space using an axis. In the same way, if you were to 'reflect' a 1D line, you would 'rotate' (ie spin it) through 2D space. All this is to say that an 'axis' in 4D space isnt a line like our intuition tells us, but a plane. Which doesn't make sense intuitively but that's higher dimensional geometry for you.

Yeah, mirrors are not what you actually look like - to achieve that you have to put two mirrors at a 90 degeee angle, and then you see what others see of you
vsauce is one of the most beloved people on the internet. there’s plenty of great creators with a lot of haters on this platform but i’ve never in my life seen or heard someone say they hate vsauce. he’s just such a lovable guy. not to mention an immaculate reputation.
Oh someone would also die if this happened to them! Due to the chirality of nature-since many enzymes are chiral, the organic molecules that they create and work on are also chiral (for example, glucose) and they cannot work on the enantiomorph of that molecule (called an enantiomer). If someone were flipped through the fourth dimension to be their enantiomorph, it would stand to reason that all of their chiral molecules, namely enzymes, would be flipped as well and no longer be able to process the chiral molecules of nature that they have evolved to process, causing the person to die of starvation at the very least. Neat, right??
Every molecule is flipped to it's enantiomer, so it would continue to function the same? A molecule like water would just be reflected onto itself? I don't really understand the 4th dimension but I want to read your comment when I'm less tired.
@@LammySammy They're talking about how enatiomer enzymes wouldn't be able to break down food sources (that normal enzymes are evolved to do), and thus you wouldn't be able to break down sugars and other food intakes. You would need the enatiomorphs of those energy molecules to get energy, otherwise they would be incompatible and you would just starve.
I'd say it would break electronics but I'm not sure how it would effect animals. We are symmetrical so a flip would probably not effect us.hower our organs would get flipped which is something that actually can happen naturally. Because some people are born with flipped organs which some people go thire whole lives not knowing about.

@@kenich2611To me it does. Though maybe that's because I'm used to 3d not translating to 2d and systems how to show stereospecificity from chemistry. It doesn't help me to imagine 4d but it helps to show me how 3d is a "drawing" of 4d and how such drawings would act.

It's not that complex. He's "basically" saying, on the 2D plane, when you look at the mirror, you see part of your 3D self. Therefore, in theory, in the 3D plane you should be able to see your 4D self, by looking at a mirror. But... I don't believe that because, he's not accounting for the mirror itself. The mirror is 2D. Just like in 3D we can't see the 1D world, in the 4D world we should be able to see the 2D world. We can imagine what the 1D world would look like, we could even demonstrate it using 2D objects (/ the 2D face of an object), but we'll never be able to actually see. With that being said, if a 3D mirror exists, then sure, we could see a part of the 4D world.

Fun fact, pulling a lemon through said 4th dimension of a mirror could turn it into an orange in terms of taste and scent. That’s because the limonene molecule’s chirality will be flipped because of a mirror’s nature, hence flipping the roles of oranges and lemons.
Funny thought but no. You can already test this, grab a lemon, rotate it 180 degrees along any axis, did it turn into an orange? The 4th dimension isn’t any more special than the first 3. Rotation in 3 dimensions and rotation in 4 dimensions is the exact same thing.
@@MyNameIsSalo think of chiral molecules like fusilli pasta. Flipping it upside down gives you the exact same shape you had before. But the mirror image of the pasta spirals the other direction. Same as your hands. Turning your right hand upside down doesn’t make it your left hand. These “non-superimposable mirror images” are what are called enantiomers which are pairs of chiral molecules that are mirrors of each other. If you still have a hard time believing this, I suggest you look into high school organic chemistry books.
I had a lucid dream like this!! One winter I was painting a mural and kinda going into mad artist mode. I dreamt I was walking through the space I was painting in irl, but everything was inverted, slightly desaturated, opposite, and the room was oriented differently like this. Into a chiral version of itself. I noticed something was off the second I walked in 😮 but I could only describe the feeling as becoming consciously aware while asleep

I think he means that we can see what the 4th dimension "could" look like because we see him in the mirror pointing with his right arm when in reality he's pointing with his left arm. It's like the L shape, if we said that he was stuck pointing with his left arm and wanted to point with his right arm, the only way he could do it is if he smashed himself inside out, looked into a mirror, or... rotate himself through a higher dimension. We don't see him rotate into a higher dimension, but the mirror shows us how it COULD happen. That's why he says "If I got rotated through a 4th dimension and brought back, I would look like that": as in be woukd now be pointing with his right arm. At least that's what I've gathered.
This comment is for the little bus people. I read it and thought well this is exactly what V said in his video and then thought there must be people that need a little extra guidance to understand what was being said in the video. Once I looked at the replies my hypothesis was correct

@@alexrynk8831 Chirality is an important concept in chemisty is probably what was meant. If you have a substance and its chiral self, its can be VASTLY different qualities for that reason alone. It's helped make a few breakthroughs IIRC. That said, this short is about Chirality in terms of dimensions. The reason I know the term is because of a talk about a 4th dimensional object called a Klein bottle...if you walked along the entire length of one, when you return to the starting point you would find that you were the opposite chirality from where/when you started.
Good luck! I got a 2.4 last year for my midterm but then I studied hard and got a 7.9 for my final. Have to do it over again this year tho, I'm doing a new degree lol and they didn't want to give me my old credits
Chemistry was literally the only time I’ve ever heard the word “chiral” before this, so hearing VSauce use it in a different context positively surprised me.
I need a clip of Vsauce fearfully backing away from a mirror while pointing at it with a phone in his hand. Edit: Sorry I should clarify, *I need it clipped into audio and animated!*
I read a sci-fi short story once where a character got flipped in the 4th dimension. He started to get sick from malnourishment due to the fact that some molecules in food are 'handed' and the mirror image is useless, nutritionally. In his case, he was mirrored, making him unable to metabolise some food molecules.
There is a great book called flatland about a 2d square who was living his life with other shapes, gets picked up and can suddenly see from above that his world is flat, I think there’s an animated version on yt
Just take everything he said and imagine him saying it upside down, inside out, and backwards... Then it makes perfect sense, from an non chiral 3D plane of existence...
Sorry his expalaination is not how the 4th dimension works. In order to get a perspective of the 4th dimension, you have to be in the 4th dimension looking down on the 3rd dimension to get a 4th dimensional perspective.
This is pretty cool. It explains a phenomenon I was struggling to comprehend when I was learning how to wrap cars. The body panels on each side of the car are chiral which comes into play when you're trying to cut material off the roll. The paper "L"s in here are a perfect representation of how you need to cut out fenders.
When I was little I was assembling this model car. I ended up tearing my hair out because I assumed the left and right stickers are, in my exact words, "mathematically the same and thus interchangeable" (of course they're not, they're just symmetrical).
@@rompis.aIt's certainly good to know whenever you have to reattach both your arms or legs after being symmetrically cut off. It works, try it you don't believe me. You could otherwise end up having them on backwards.
