I'll say this for the Gran Turismo license tests: I completely sucked at racing games until I got through those, but now I can play them competently. Those tests even helped me drive better in real life - less because the physics were true-to-life, and more because all the principles they teach are sound. Individual tire grip, weight transfer, clean lines, etc. Unforgiving as they were, those license tests did more for my understanding of driving cars than actual driver's ed did.

This sums up my experience as well. I'm not much of a gamer, but I'm fairly competent and competitive in racing games, and I owe it primarily to doing those license tests over and over back when I was 13.

@VariantAEC
@VariantAEC 2 года назад
That menu music and really all the music was all rock and electronic themed outside of JP which was still likely Kazunori's choice (being the Director and Producer), but those choices worked out very well in the US and in the EU as well. Despite liking rock music only the tracks that made it into the game from each respective artist really resonated with me (then and now). I still listen to those tracks, the licensed ones but every time I do, I think about GT... I still have my OG copy which wasn't even purchased for me. My parents picked it up for themselves but they never really played it and they eventually relinquished ownership of Gran Turismo (1998) to me though my mother still has the second game in her cabinet it was purchased by my father, but he doesn't play it either. Kind of how I got into some other games on PS was from games my parents rarely picked up for themselves like Air Combat, Star Wars: Dark Forces and Tiny Tank (the latter in that list was not a kids game, but I was allowed to watch).
@rodmunch69
@rodmunch69 2 года назад
The dealership layout was awesome, and it's garbage they don't do that today. Also used car inventory that changed, cars with mileage that would affect sale value and performance, these early GT's were awesome. The RPG racing sim was amazing, then the idiots thought no one wanted that RPG leveling up stuff, nah, they just want mindless online competitive racing. Morons.

The fact that they were able to pull off a game with these physics and this amount of realism in the mid 90's is absolutely incredible. I can't even estimate the number of hours me and my friends put into this game. Taking our memory cards to each other's houses and racing our own unique cars against each other. Then GT2 came out and blew our minds again. These games came out when I was in middle school and taught me a lot about cars, racing, physics and tuning.

I think it was a secret because it would only work in less detailed versions of a few tracks, instead of letting you pick from every track available in the main game. The compromises that had to be done to make it work at 60fps were probably too much for a whole game.

I think the important thing to remember when considering the quirks of the license tests and even he quirks outside of the license tests is that Kaz was also very heavily influenced by the TV magazine Best Motoring, a kind of Japanese Top Gear. There’s an official Best Motoring Chanel on YT and if you go and watch some of the 90’s uploads all will become immediately clear, as the way they used to evaluate cars from small Kei cars to firebreathing supercars all included these kinds of trials. And once you watch the track battle you’ll basically realise the whole game just reacreates the world of the TV show. And I love it even more for it!

The start and break test is one of the best lessons this tests teach, englobed in it is: visual sign to breaking points, acceleration from 0 and breaking. You need to keep track of distance in signs teaching you to search for breaking points on other track's, controlling starting acceleration to avoid loosing grip.

GT 1 will always have a place in my heart.I grew up with games like stunts which was a dos game wacky wheels nfs 1 test drive 1 etc etc.When i first got gt 1 was like 15 years old and it change my way of playing car games.It also introduced me to the skyline which are my all time favorite(T R32)I didnt mind the grinding.That is the reason i uninstalled forza horizon 4 because you get fast cars without putting any work in it.I have original gt from 1-4(never got a ps3 or 4 nor would i ever get one)I play gt 4 on pc with emulator and i love it so far.Never got around to finish 3 and 4 so taking some time to do so.

As a 34 yr old who still loves gaming, I can say that this game was perfectly challenging for me as I was still developing mentally and helped mold my gaming skills they are today.

This game not only got me into cars, it also helped shape my taste in music. Since GT1, Feeder is still my favourite rock band, and will always be. And the original soundtrack was just as good as the licensed one!

This game meant so much to me. It led to my love of the series overall, and by the time I played GT3 A-Spec, I knew that the first car I would fully finance on my own would be a Subaru WRX. But it all started here. This game, more than anything else in my life, taught me to love the art of driving, and that no car was just a car but a machine with a distinctive personality.

Gran Turismo was recommended to me by a game store employee when I was 7, i had never seen any news of it. It was significantly harder than than any game I’d ever played before, and caught the attention of my entire family.

I am so used to play Gran Turismo (1,2,3) that, even now whenever I take a newer game my hands automatically goes to the D-pad for stearing, I don't know I just feel that I can have much more precise imput than on the sticks, of course that can be right but it's the feeling that I got. Anyway, great review as always!

I have to say, the portion about the art style, music, and menus was spot on. This was one of the first games I really got into as a kid and the US cover, and dealer music has stayed with me to this day. Did we ever figure out whats under the car cover?

It should be noted that Gran Turismo didn't look how it is presented here. We had CRT tv sets that smoothed the image slightly. Most of us played on 14" sets explaining very large icons. Colour bleed and such were all factors in development. We didn't have hi-res pixel perfect displays back then. Just an observation not a critique. Great video.

Aka ToCa World Touring Cars, its real name. I love that game, though it felt a bit less polished than ToCa 2 in terms of gameplay and sounds. The cheats are what made it infinitely replayable for random fun haha

I was one of those 11mil and still have my copy to this day...Developers should look at this game and hang their heads in shame as this is the way to release a game, complete, with hundreds of hours of gameplay, no ingame purchases or DLC were needed! And it just got 4 times better when GT2 was released. Great review as always.
