Hi, me again, I haven't seen my old home since 2004. Lotta changes. The "RV" park, used to be a campground, with no extras, except for 2 separate outhouses. One for men and one for women. My first job on my first day working on the maintenance crew, June of 1992, was to paint both of those old wooden buildings. I presume it was one of those jobs to see if I would stick it out. My situation at the time, was, I had no where else to go. The original camping area for campers, as the RV's were called in the day, was just west of the swimming pool. Unknown to most, pretty Interstate 40 days, the caverns was a busy, busy tourist stop. The buildings were built during the "boom" years. Up on top where the 100,000 gallon water tower is, there is a concrete base for a second 100,000 gallon water tower to be placed. The 4 motel buildings were constructed so a second floor with additional rooms could be put above the first floor. Lotta small towns suffered due to being bypassed by Interstate Highways. So, tourism died, additions were halted. It's kind of due to the old Route 66 tv series seen in repeats in foreign countries that revitalized tourism on 66 and visits to the caverns. I feel lucky to have lived and worked there when Arizona was still the old west, back when minimum wage was 4.25 per hour and employee housing was free with water gas and electric included. Got paid twice a month and made the 130 mile round trip to Kingman, for what we called, "the supply run" aka, grocery shopping until next payday. Just sharing. You could've asked inside how much to stay at RV park, and I wonder why you didn't stay on night there. I don't know about now, but they used to supply campfire wood too. You're a lucky man to afford to travel and share your videos. My advice, slow down, there's so much to see and learn and you could share more with us viewers. Pardon me for saying so. No offense intended.

👍👍 Grand Canyon Cavern always amazes me. Also is one of very few dry caves/caverns in the world. Amost forgot to mention. Many years ago, they made smoke in the cavern because there were holes and cracks too small for people to crawl through and wanted to see if any of them lead to the outside. Two weeks later, smoke was sited coming out from a crack in the wall of Grand Canyon. That is why this cavern is called Grand Canyon Caverns.

We've been subscribed and watching you for last few years! First time commenting, but had to let you know how much we appreciate your videos and great info! We just completed our first 7 months out traveling in our bus and actually did stop and do a video on the Grand Canyon Caverns but now see how we missed the gem of the campgrounds right there!! We appreciate your style Russ!! Robin and Scott from Recalculating Bus

Fun side trip here, Russ. Thanks for taking us along. I’ve been a Route 66 enthusiast for many years and have even done a few books. But I still have never been down through the caverns, so I must remedy this situation. 👍 Looks like a great place “Grand Canyon Caverns,” formerly “Dinosaur Caverns.” Great history here.

Interesting, I must look for your books. I do most of my camping and exploring on Route 66 and Beales Wagon Road Trail, and places on The Navajo Nation. Just a poor man, dont go as much as I used to. I know I've walked along 66 more than most and when I do, I take my sweet time. There also was another road that pretty much ran along 66, except it went coast to coast. Think it was called Natioal Highway. Have a few signs and googled it. Lotta history, fading fast now, such a shame. Happy researching and exploring to you...

When I was a young kid, we lived in Eastern Washington State. Every two years we would go to Gramma's house in the Ozarks in Arkansas. One of the favorite things was reading the Burma Shave signs. US 30 had a lot of them in Wyoming and Nebraska as did US 50 in Kansas. Sure like the interstate highways now, but sometimes miss the Burma Shaves.

I've always wondered why more underground dwellings aren't built in Arizona and the other desert areas. The natural temperature control would be a real asset. It doesn't have to be 300 feet underground to work

I was a tour guide there, before all the development down below. I can still remember most of my tour script! LOL! When the air flow was moving the right way, we would prop the elevator door open and the cool cave air would blow into the building; natural A/C. We used to call the cave Gracie, because she was an old, classy lady. Can't say I'm happy with the "improvements", though. The caverns are a natural wonder that far outweighs any novelty factor. It's impossible to improve on perfection!

Love the Grand Canyon cavern! I've been there twice and it was worth it both times. It is a dry cavern which is why there were mummified remains of a cat and a sloth that fell in there. This hidden gem from Route 66 needs to be seen to really be appreciated. I hope your video encourages more people to visit. Thanks for sharing

@@panderson9561 Grand Canyon is 277 miles long and National Park section is only 1/3 of the whole canon. Closest point of Grand Canyon in a straight line is only about 18 miles from the Cavern. North of Peach Springs, a place called Diamond Creek.

When I was a guide there in the early 2000s, we offered a shortened tour of the first room, the Chapel of the Ages for those not able to complete the whole tour. That part is actually wheelchair accessible. I can't imagine them not still offering that tour today, so it might not be as undoable as you think.
