Grand Canyon National Park Closes North Kaibab Trail following landslide

Grand Canyon National Park has just announced the closure of the North Kaibab Trail between the North Kaibab Trailhead and Cottonwood Campground because of a rockslide and landslides making passaged dangerous for hikers.
As the essential rim to rim trail, rim to rim hikers will not be able to complete their journey until the park reopens the seven miles between the North Kaibab Trailhead and Cotton would campground on June 2, 2023.

I did South Kaibab Trail to Tonto Trail to Bright Angel Trail in 2019 and it was amazing. Definitely a worthy substitute.

Just hiked rim-to-rim-rim in April 2024, and evidence of the landslides are still there. You literally have to crawl over the boulders! For those who have never been, below the rim especially during the spring is INCREDIBLY GORGEOUS. The North Rim was still snowed in, which meant our group got to do snow angels. And then tackle those rockslides AGAIN on the way back to the South Rim!

I was on the North Kaibab Trail in March of 2023 on the way up. I heard a loud thundering and looked up and saw a large microwave sized boulder rolling down the cliff above my companions. It stopped short, but when we came around the next cutback there was now a refrigerator sized boulder in the middle of the trail we all had to shimmy around. After hiking many miles fully loaded w/ a full pack I nearly lost my footing going around the bouilder, but recovered at the last minute. Unusually snowy for that time of year and muddy on the trail. Will never forget that.

Glad you made it out. With last year's snowpack there were lots of rockslides along the North Kaibab trail. I can only imagine it was a stressful experience. I also hope you've been able to watch my full rim to rim series. Having hike within the canyon I'm sure you would have a special appreciation for my videos.
