Bassline notes SAME AS PLAYED on the original recording on 'Closer to Home' LP, released in 1970.
A Bass Player you should know: Mel Schacher. As a teen, I got really into Mel's awesome basslines that filled the total sound of the 3-piece rock band, Grand Funk, based in Flint, Michigan, U.S.A.
*Note: This video is my little show of gratitude to the great guys in this band--you might be surprised to learn that in 1971, while I was hitchhiking direction south on Woodward Avenue in Birmingham, Michigan, an old model Cadillac approached and slowed and offered me a ride. I hopped in and sat in the back seat. Can you guess who was driving this Cadillac? Actually, Grand Funk's guitarist, Mark Farner was driving while Don Brewer, Grand Funk's drummer, (sporting a big 'Afro' hair style) was seated in the front passenger seat. It's a true story!

*****The tone of my bass: My Expert Guitar Luthier attached a used, genuine vintage 1960 Sprague tone capacitor (value = 0,1mdf) to the electronics (and replaced the standard factory-issued capacitor) in this Fender Roadworn Jazz Bass so as to create a 60's tone, while I have worked with the knobs on my bass and amp to attain a flat, yet punchy tone. The bass in this video is a Fender Jazz Bass Roadworn (purchased at Sam Ash, Phoenix, Arizona) with three year old Ernie Ball slinky flatwound strings and playing through a Marshall amplifier with the tone settings straight up, or 'flat'.
* I own no part of this music. This is an educational / instructional video where my bass is mixed a little louder than the band so it may be easily heard. Aspiring bass players may see where to place there fingers on the fretboard and where to find the notes as played on the original recording.

I remember getting this album as an aspiring young 12yr old bassist and the moment I dropped the needle onto the album I was transfixed as if I was in a trance! Every bass line Mel played just blew me away, what I loved about Grand Funk they all were great musicians and singers but they let each other shine! The bass was a lead instrument too, very profound move in rock, no one played bass the way Mel, John Paul Jones, and Jack Bruce did, don’t get wrong here, Butler and others layer heavy riffs, those bass lines lacked the sweet melodic phrasing of the first three named, those three were all over the neck with beautiful tones in their notes. At the time I heard all of the early Grand Funk albums I was going through a lot and those jams would pull me through the day, they were my favorite band back then and forever will be! Mark was a helluva vocalist pre- Steve Perry, I’m a high range vocalist to this day because of them. Music really does have a major influence on us, especially when we’re under 30, back in the 60, 70’s, the under 30 crowds had politics in the music so kids marched to that anthem, but from 1985 to the present, music has been filled with more hate and criminal jargon glorifying violence and death, and the result of that we see the under 30 crowd doing just that, outlandish acts of violence! Music is the healing force of the world, but when demonic people make it it harms humanity! Peter thank you for posting the baseline for I’m Your Captain, you played it exactly like Mel played it!!!❤

I have to say, this is the absolute best cover of Closer to Home that I've ever seen! I have been trying to learn this song for years, and I've watched every bass cover I could find. None come close to picking up all the nuanced notes that you have. As I watched, I saw just how many mistakes I've been making! Also, Peter, thank you for the video angle, making it easy to see both of your hands. That's a huge help for those of us trying to learn.

I love your playing and bass tone as thick as Mel Schacher's tone. Grand Funk Railroad was my dad's favorite band and this was of his favorite tunes. He bought me a J-Bass back when I was in high school that looked just like this one. I used to struggle a lot when learning this song with keeping the time consistently. It was very tricky! 😹 Amazing job and thank you very much for delivering such great memories!

You crushed it! Such great playing. I noticed that you too play with “flying fingers” on the fretting hand as I do. It absolutely has no effect upon your ability. I like seeing this as some people have given me advice on how to stop it. After watching you play, I’ll focus on other skills.

Haa - Yea, its like when someone say to stop making a mess when you're eating. I say If you're not making a mess you not having fun!... same with the flying fingers "rule"... let em fly & have fun :) Those "Trained professionals" with fingers that barely move are BORING

are you certain about using that Bb in the last run, instead of B C C# D ? just asking sounds like a chromatic run on the recording to D
@Fretfeeler
@Fretfeeler 3 года назад
I agree, and if it's not, maybe it should be. Also during the verse riff on the C chord I think it should just be D, ADADC, C, EEGAC

Are your right hand fingers longer than your left? Seems really weird the way you play LOL
@peterg.bassist
@peterg.bassist 3 года назад
Thank you, Rob, for taking your time to watch and listen to my video showcasing Mel Schacher, and thank you for expressing your sincere query. Hey, I just checked both sets of my fingers and....(drum roll, please) LOL, my left hand fingers are actually a bit longer than my right hand fingers. That's due to having done so much playing on the fretboard over the past 48 years. Hovever, in this video, the camera lens is simply 'closer' to my right hand fingers, they just appear longer. Thanks again, 'Bassically', for asking, and have a Great Bass Day!

@@peterg.bassist P.S. great cover. One of the closest I've seen. I play it very close to what you play, I just use slightly different patterns in some places that make more sense with my style.

@@Fretfeeler Rob, my left hand fingering is influenced by having played the upright bass since 1973.
@Fretfeeler
@Fretfeeler 2 года назад
@@peterg.bassist You have an edge on me there, I never used to be able to play upright. Considering it's been decades and my fingers are about 10x stronger, I should try it again...
