Grand Funk Railroad Live at Shea Stadium, New York, NY July 9, 1971 (40 Minutes of footage!) 

I hear ya! If this was the early 70s and YT existed back then, there would be that many views. Sad that most people in current era are missing out on what true music was. These 3 guys went up on stage and just kicked ass and gave it everything. The musicianship, cohesion and improvisation talent of GFR are wonders to behold. I am glad you enjoyed it man and that you appreciate the finer things in life! I wish the whole concert, without goofy effects and in HQ was available. Yeah, agreed & I read vid info. I saw them in Pittsburgh 11/1/71 @ Civic Arena several months after Shea, Black Oak Arkansas was the opening act. Similar effect as Shea concert, sold out/off the hook performance, etc. Also saw them, same venue 72/w Billy Preston, 74/w Wet Willie. Both of those, also sold out/same standards, great as usual. But 72/74 had a different feel w keyboards added. This was understandable tho, as they were experimenting, trying to keep up, as the industry was changing rapidly. . . Mark used a white hollow body gtr at 71 show, it looked like a Gretsch White Falcon, but it wasn't. It had a Microfret headstock. 72 he used the cherry red/double cutaway/solid body microfret, 74 the metallic Veleno. Interesting to note: They played Footstompin Music at 11/1/71 show, but E Pluribus wasn't officially released until 11/15/71. So I'm assuming that was one of the first performances of Footstompin', they said, "this is from our new album" as they launched into it. Also, I've read that many of their live shows were filmed, especially the early ones, yet so little film/vid has ever been released. Certainly unfortunate. . . So little documentation of the true scope of what they did. But that's the case with lots of bands from that era. With GFR it's really perplexing, as big as they were. But thanks for the post...

@@dsmythe5329That is cool you saw them in their prime man. Must have been mindblowing indeed! I have a recording from Boston on Oct 3/71, they played FSM at that gig as opening number too! I didn't know about a number of their concerts being filmed, but that is cool if they were. Someday we might get Shea and some other stuff. I agree, there is not enough live GFR audio and video available. I have 15 shows from 70-75. But its not like Zep or Purple where pretty much every gig someone recorded it from the audience, or in Zep's case the many soundboards that are also available. Too bad as GFR are amazing live and tight and in a groove the entire show.

Put this on your Facebook page that's what I'm going to do. Spread the word out. The a the amazing thing about this group that I remember is that they became popular on pretty much sheer word of mouth a true peoples band and a band of the people !

All you got to do is look at this crowd who came to see them---black, white, and brown, rich and poor, young and old, straight, hippie, and beatnik---they appealed to everyone!

Wow, very cool you were at Shea, its a mythical concert and sucks you don't remember it! LOL But that must mean you had an amazing time there, assuming you weren't passed out or tripping out to the point you didn't even know you were there. No, the concert would have been probably at least 65 or 70 minutes long, maybe even more. In addition to the songs in the video, they probably performed In Need, Mean Mistreater, Hooked on Love, Get it Together and Into The Sun as that was their typical set list in summer 1971. Yeah man! These guys are so tight live and just total fire, power and energy comes of that stage visually and audially. Like a volcano erupting. I wish it was the whole concert and in better quality, without the lengthy bad camera shots. I get it was early 70s and the video effects were implemented a fair bit, but I'd much rather just watch the performance without the slow-mo and not concentrating on them playing their instruments. But take what we can get when it comes to GFR video since there is so little of it available. Monolithic band!

@@HendrixJHE It's great for me anyway. It's the first time I've seen more material from this historic concert. I'm 64 years old and in my teens I was a big fan of theirs. From the album ''...American band'' I lost interest but until the album ''Phoenix'' which I liked a lot despite some fans despising it, I was eagerly awaiting the news. Very grateful for sharing this video.

@@Seventysongs Cool man, glad you recognize the importance of this gig, and any live GFR gig really! I was shocked to come across it and knew I had to put it up on my channel after so long of an absence. It was the perfect one to return with! I have no clue of the origins of it. It certainly looks like enough editing work was put into it that it was in a final form for release. I am pretty sure that Terry Knight had a hand in the fact it didn't get released soon after it was filmed. He probably wouldn't pay the Maysles their money or give them a cut of the profits! LOLOL And of course now with the differences between the band members, since it hasn't been officially released in 50 years, its doubtful we will ever see the full concert. It would be mindblowing though if they release it, without the effects nonsense and just focus on them playing their fucking asses off the entire gig! You have a decade on me, but I got in to Hendrix at 14 (40 years ago) and other than metal which I lived through the early-mid 80s as a teenager, I have always been in to the rock greats of 60s and 70s. But weirdly, I only got into GFR heavy about 4 or 5 years ago. I knew they did I'm Your Captain, American Band and Locomotion but didn't know any of their other music until one day, at almost 50 years old, I just decided to start at the beginning and listen to their LPs in sequence. By the time I got the Live LP, that was it, I got hooked on them quite nicely indeed! Then I sought out video (an all too small amount) of live footage of GFR and seeing them in action just upped the ante. There are a few live recordings in varying quality available if you are into bootlegs. But for live footage, other than the MSG 72 footage (also on my channel) and the 74 LA Forum stuff (which is after they became more pop oriented so while great, it isn't the GFR of 69-72) this Shea stuff is probably the next longest piece of live footage from a single gig. Glad you dug it my man! If more somehow comes out (don't hold your breath!) I will certainly post it up!

@@HendrixJHE yes, of this show I had seen very little. Greedy Terry Knight, if he's still alive, maybe he has more material, since the breakup was troubled... and for some time now there's also been the disagreements between Mark, Don and Mel... only time will tell if we'll have more material this or any other concert that may exist on video. About bootlegs, for many years I was a collector and had a lot of audio material, with all the band from the 60s and mainly from the 70s, which were the years that I really enjoyed it all. In the 70s it was not easy to find, especially since I live in Brazil, so bootlegs were obtained on a swap basis or by copying them onto K7 tapes. And it went on like this for a long time. My collection only increased considerably around 2003 when I joined a site called "Sharing the groove" which shared bootlegs. It didn't last long as the mighty RIAA sued them. Shortly thereafter another site came up.."Dimeadozen" and I also joined and downloaded like a crazy hundreds of concerts...it was practically all day long I was glued to the computer lol. Around 2007 or 2008 I was already disconnected from the site and changes happened in my life. I had to get rid of many things and gave my bootlegs to a friend who also collected...they were in good hands. Returning to the GF, yes I know the two videos. The one from 74 I had on VHS and the one from MSG I saw here on YT...maybe it was through your channel. Yeah, I was a huge fan until Phoenix, but from then on, every album I only liked one song or another and as I liked a lot of other bands too, I stopped buying their albums. Hopefully more things come out of them...I'll stay tuned to your channel.

@@Seventysongs I think there is only the I'm Your Captain clip and maybe footage of their arrival at Shea. There ain't much for sure and given the legendary status of this particular performance, I was blown away to obtain this 40 minutes worth of the show. When I started this channel it was purely for fun/archive/sharing of videos. I don't make any money off it, and got bored/busy and stopped uploading for quite awhile. But when I watched this clip, and knowing the back story, I knew I had to up it. As for Knight, lol man, you didn't hear about that I guess! Probably close to 20 years ago he got involved in an altercation with his daughter's BF and the fucker stabbed Terry and killed him dead! I assume his daughter controls his estate? I am not sure who has the title to whatever he owns/retains with respect to rights, and more importantly, recordings. I don't know exactly why the Shea stuff isn't being released. Its either a disagreement between Band/Knight Estate/Maysles of $$$ (which is why the Jimi RAH 69 gigs aren't available officially either) or Don doesn't like the fact that Mark is kind of the star of the band and/or he doesn't want him to make any royalties off of it. Since it was recorded before the contract fiasco lawsuit that fucked the band, HARD, I am assuming it would be Terry's estate who would have the rights. I am pretty sure that one of Knight's huge wins in that lawsuit was that he got royalties for the first 6 LPs. But as you know, law is complex and convoluted (I know, I work in the field! LOL) and I'd have to read the decision to really get a grasp. It'd be nice to know definitively why Shea is not being released. I don't know if anyone has even asked the guys in an interview why it isn't released. I might be wrong, to be honest, I never really delved into the lawsuit end of the story of GFR, only have a peripheral knowledge on the subject. I know when they put out that 3CD 30 Years of Funk, I read an article recently about the live tracks on it. The guy who put the set together said there a few live shows recorded, so they have at least 3 or 4 concert recordings at least that could be released. But, yeah with the legal and personal issues, I am not hopeful of anything more than what we already have. Ahh Brazil, I am in Canada. You must be a Senna fan too I bet! Big F1 fan I am too, just as much as I am with the music! As for bootlegs, yes, I discovered those very early when I was young and was fascinated with them! I had many bootleg LPs, over 80 of Jimi Hendrix alone. Then found a Jimi Hendrix mailing list in 1996 and got into tape, VHS and CDR trading. Then of course digital era came and that was it. Like you I downloaded like a mad man! All the bands I really am heavy into, about 156 or 20, I had everything I could find! Just crazy! Like when you think of Pink Floyd for example, most people don't know much about them live from late 60s to 77 Animals tour. But man, I had over 150 concerts of PF and they were stellar live too! Some very great sounding bootlegs, and long jams on songs. I have been on dimeadozen for a decade too! Also Trader's Den, Jam to This and about 20 more torrent sites. I remember STG, but wasn't on that one too much, more DaD and TD, and also a specific Hendrix and another also a Floyd torrent sites. IU currently have a 10TB HD and am using almost 7.5TB for my music and video collection! HAHA I sold everything physical I had long ago. It was nice to have the LPs and stuff, but takes up too much room! Now I can carry everything in one hand! LOLOL To wrap up on GFR again, one song after Phoenix LP that I really like is Destitute and Losin'! What a great song given what they went through. And the music is nice and gritty bluesy. Nice to talk to you man, glad you have knowledge of all the great stuff out there than what you can only buy in a store. Sooooo much music that is fantastic but no one knows about it because they don't know about bootlegs or audience recordings! Take it easy, hope to talk to you again!

Yeah, I concur. I was speechless when I watched it for the first time too! Imagine if we had the whole show, without effects, all songs complete, in HQ video. I think I'd probably be happy to die knowing I got to see and hear the the whole Shea concert! LOL

No, I enjoy the Eagles, but I never really focused on them in my collecting. I might have one or two shows but you would definitely have them as they were easily obtained through the various torrent sites that catered to music audio and video.

And yet still not in the Rock Hall of Fame
